lol@retiring garrison hearst, he was good, but frank gore is a better niner rb then him.
naw not retiring his number, i mean he should be in the niner hof, his numbers support my argument, I believe roger craig is the only niner back who has better numbers as a niner

5535 rush yards and 1604 rec yards in 5 years and overcame that bad ass injury for a 1000 yard season. 33 total tds

His career as a Niner was better than Bo Jacksons career.

I like Gore as well, and gore is 4 years deep in his career and already has 4,441 rush yards 26 total tds and 1,425 rec yards.

GREATEST 49ERS ATHLETE EVER

I'm writing this article to salute the man whom I consider to be the greatest athlete to ever put on a 49er uniform. He may well have been the best athlete in American history. He is the youngest player to EVER start an NFL game.

That means a lot when you consider the amazing talent that has graced this organization since the team's beginning in 1946. The names roll off the tongue ...McElhenny, Perry, Tittle, Brodie, the man pictured above, Steve Young, Jerry Rice, John Taylor.

We also can't forget that we have had some Olympic track stars on the Niners like Renaldo Nehemiah and Bob Hayes. Jimmy Johnson was an amazing athlete and a brother to Olympic Decathlon champion, Rafer Johnson.

Well, my choice is none of these. He grew up in San Diego and was 6'4" and 230 lbs. by his senior year and very intimidating. He graduated from high school in 1952 as one of the greatest high school athletes in San Diego history.

He earned twelve (12) varsity letters. He ran the 100 yard dash in 9.6 seconds (only .3 of a second off the world record at the time), high jumped 6 feet, and set a shot put record of 57 feet, 9 1/4 inches. He also ran on the relay team. That was just in track.

When the Harlem Globetrotters came to town they tried to persuade his parents to allow them to sign him immediately and take him on the road with them. They refused and he remained in high school.

While in high school, he used to stop along the way to school at the home of World Light Heavyweight champion, Archie Moore. Each morning, he and Archie would spar, a high school kid, and the champion of the world. He held his own. He would also box at military bases to earn money for his family.

Right after graduating from high school, he signed a major league baseball contract with the St. Louis Browns of the American League. He played for the Stockton team in the California League during the summer. His power hitting reputation was legendary. It is said that he is the only player ever to consistently hit a ball over the roof at Balboa Stadium.

Finally, at the urging of QB Frankie Albert, Niner Head Coach, "Buck" Shaw drove to San Diego, met with his parents, and signed him to a contract which required his parents' signature. That first season in 1952, the Niners paid him $10,000. By the way, his name was Charlie Powell.

When he arrived in camp they decided to see what Charlie had and feed him to the wolves. He was lined up across from Leo Nomellini, the 6'3" 270 lbs. tackle who rightfully belongs in the Hall of Fame. Leo was also a professional wrestler who met Lou Thesz for the world championship. Charley stunned the Niners by holding his own with Leo, who was considered one of the toughest and meanest linemen in the league.

In his first game as a 19-year old defensive end, Charlie stunned the NFL. Playing against famed QB Bobby Layne and talent-laden team made up of several All-Pros, Charlie sacked Layne ten (10) times for -67 yards.

Layne didn't complete a pass until the fourth quarter. Charley was awarded the game ball, the first 49ers Rookie ever to earn one. Before I receive comments that he couldn't have had ten sacks because the NFL record is 8, this was before the league officially counted sacks.

Charley played a couple of seasons for the 49ers but his first love was boxing. He knocked out No. 2 contender Nino Valdes and earned a shot at Muhammed Ali. He lost to Ali, but Charlie will always be remembered by us old-time Kezar fans who loved No. 87 before Dwight Clark wore it.

Baseball, football, basketball, track, boxing...Charlie was not just good, but great at all of them. I salute Charlie Powell, the greatest athlete to ever wear a 49er uniform.

49ers' roster competition to heat up
http://www.sacbee.com/sf49ers/story/1869668.html?mi_rss=49ers

SANTA CLARA – The 49ers meet as a team today for the first time since the draft as they kick off four days of organized team activities (OTAs). Their roster is the deepest it's been in years, and several intriguing roster battles begin today, including:

• Quarterback. The big battle, between Shaun Hill and Alex Smith, started in early April. However, there also is a secondary competition between veteran Damon Huard and rookie Nate Davis for the No. 3 job. The 49ers have not said whether they will keep four quarterbacks. If they don't, Huard or Davis will be cut, although Davis could find a spot on the practice squad.

• Running back. Coach Mike Singletary made it clear Frank Gore is still the featured runner. Third-round pick Glen Coffee also will get carries, but after that there are plenty of question marks. Holdovers Michael Robinson and Thomas Clayton and rookie Kory Sheets, who has plenty to prove after going undrafted, will vie for playing time. Robinson is a valuable special-teams performer. Clayton and Sheets are competing for the same roster spot.

• Wide receiver. Last year the 49ers entered the season with five receivers (Dominique Zeigler was activated during the season). This year there's a crowd at the position with Isaac Bruce, Josh Morgan, Jason Hill, Arnaz Battle and Zeigler returning and Brandon Jones and first-round pick Michael Crabtree added in recent months. Another receiver, Micheal Spurlock, will see time as a return man.

• Right tackle. Free-agent addition Marvel Smith is penciled in as the starter. But who plays behind him? Barry Sims and Adam Snyder filled in at right tackle last season. Sims has more experience, but Snyder is more versatile. The 49ers also want to see if undrafted rookie Alex Boone is athletic enough to play in the NFL.

• Safety. San Francisco safeties have produced very few turnovers in recent years, and consequently, there is a host of new faces at the position. Dashon Goldson finally has a chance to turn his playmaking potential into a starting spot at free safety.

Behind Goldson and strong safety Michael Lewis, Jimmy Williams, Reggie Smith, Lewis Baker and rookie Curtis Taylor are looking for roster spots.

• Inside linebacker. Patrick Willis and Takeo Spikes are the unquestioned starters in the middle of the defense. Behind them, only one player, Jeff Ulbrich, has any real NFL experience. Fifth-round pick Scott McKillop is being groomed to eventually take over Spikes' position, but second-year players Justin Roland and Mark Washington have potential as well.

In a posting last week on his Twitter account, agent Drew Rosenhaus indicated that there were two teams that were "serious" about signing Plaxico Burress. The assumption then, as now, was that the New York Jets are one of those teams. On Sunday at the Bears Expo, Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo addressed his team's "seriousness" about signing Plax in saying, "Are we one of those teams? No," according to the Chicago Tribune.
In spite of this lack of "serious" interest, the team will perform its due diligence on Burress. Angelo explained this to the Tribune: "We'll look at every option. [His] situation is different because there are circumstances. We'll monitor it." He later said, "[Burress] could help any team. His play, his production speaks for itself. Everybody would love to have him on their team, including the New York Giants. But obviously, there are things that have to happen now for him to play in the league, get on with his life. There are a lot of hurdles to cross before you can really seriously sit here and use that as a viable option."

The last line underscores the reason why receiver-needy teams have been cautious in their approach to Plax, as even if he does not receive any jail time for his gun possession charges, the league could suspend him for a significant part of 2009. Of course, there's a remote chance that the league could consider the six regular-season games that Burress missed in 2008 as "time already served" and shorten the suspension to just a game or two.

Although the Jets and Bears will remain as the top rumored teams in the Burress hunt, don't count out the St. Louis Rams, San Francisco 49ers or Oakland Raiders. Burress would represent a keen upgrade to the Rams' receiving corps and he would be reuniting with a familiar face in Steve Spagnuolo, albeit a face that used to coach Burress' defensive counterparts with the G-Men. As for the Niners and Raiders, Plax would be a solid veteran upgrade to their respective slew of pass-catchers as well, and would take some of the heat off of each of those teams' highly drafted receivers. And if Oakland's rumored interest in Michael Vick proves to be true, Burress' alleged crimes pale in comparison. The Baltimore Ravens were so desperate for receiving help that they brought in Jerry Porter for a workout, but the team has very little room under the cap and would not be able to financially compete with the offers from other teams.

In the end, it's unlikely that any team will be making official moves on Burress until after his next court appearance on June 15, when we'll know more about the long-term results of his legal issue.

49ers Sign S Taylor, Waive CB Williams
http://www.49ers.com/pressbox/news_detail.php?PRKey=5306
The San Francisco 49ers announced that they have signed seventh-round draft choice S Curtis Taylor to a four-year contract. The team also announced that it has waived CB Jimmy Williams.

Taylor (6-2, 209) appeared in 50 career games (22 starts) during his LSU career. In that span, he recorded 112 tackles, two sacks, 11 passes defensed, five interceptions and one fumble recovery. Taylor played in 13 games (9 starts) in 2008, recording 43 tackles, one sack, two interceptions and one fumble recovery. In 2007, he helped LSU to a national championship by registering 54 tackles, one sack, and three interceptions.

The 23-year-old Taylor is a native of Franklinton, LA. He becomes the third of the 49ers seven 2009 draft picks to sign with the team.

Williams (6-3, 220) was originally drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round (37th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft out of Virginia Tech. He spent the 2008 season out of football before being signed by the 49ers in January of 2009.
