BOWLES ON THE MEND; WANTS HIS WEC TITLE SHOT

It was hard for WEC bantamweight contender Brian Bowles to watch champion Miguel Torres get taken to task by Takeya Mizugaki. Could have been me, he thought.

“If Mizugaki had been in a little better shape, or used a better strategy, he could have beat him,” Bowles told MMAWeekly.com.

There were seven weeks left to go when Bowles shot in for a takedown during practice and felt a pop in his lower back.

“I got all stiff; I couldn’t move right for a couple of days,” he said.

The Athens, Ga., resident had quit his jack-of-all-trades job at a local bar to focus on the fight, and didn’t want to drop out. The compressed vertebrae at the end of his spine, diagnosed by an orthopedist days later, argued otherwise.

In the end, though, he had no choice, and was forced to withdraw from his title shot with Torres on April 5 at WEC 40.

Mizugaki’s attack that night, peppering Torres with punches on the inside, was his idea. After five hard-fought rounds, Torres persevered by outworking the Japanese fighter, but he looked a lot more hit-able.

“That was supposed to have been my title shot then,” he said. “I think I deserve it. Most people think I deserve it.”

It wasn’t the first occasion he had injured his back – just the first time it took away a major opportunity. This time around, he made sure to follow a strict rehab regimen that would give him a better shot at avoiding the problem in the future.

“(The doctors) said there are no promises it won’t happen again, but I’m doing a lot of stuff to focus on getting my back stronger.”

In a couple of weeks, he’ll be training full time again. On Monday, he starts grappling, having spent the last month lifting weights and boxing.

“In my mind, that’s how you have to fight him anyway,” Bowles said of the WEC champ. “You have to get inside on him. He’s got that long reach; he just towers over guys like Tapia and Maeda and does a good job of picking them apart from the outside. I think Mizugaki wasn’t afraid of him, and just came forward and brawled with him.”

Of course, if Mizugaki had taken the title that night, Bowles would be facing an entirely different type of fight, with maybe not as much upside. Mizugaki was a last minute import; Torres graced many Top 10 pound-for-pound lists. In that way, things might have worked out better.

Bowles’ frame won’t support a full on brawl right now, but he hopes by the summer, possibly July or August, he’ll be ready to stake his claim in the 135-pound division.

“I think I’m going to be ready,” he said. “I’m going to be fine.”

RADACH SHATTERS HAND, BUT PULLS NO PUNCHES

Many pundits thought that heading into last weekend’s Strikeforce event that the match-up between Benji “Razor” Radach and Scott Smith had the potential to be an exciting fight. What they got ended up being labeled by many the show’s Fight of the Night with its high-paced action and dramatic come-from-behind TKO victory by Smith.

For Radach however, the fight was a double-fold loss, not only on paper, also physically, as he suffered a shattered hand early in the fight that required surgery that will sideline him for the immediate future.

Speaking to MMAWeekly.com from his home in Los Angeles, Radach spoke about the fight, his upcoming recovery, and why he feels he deserves a rematch.

MMAWeekly: Firstly, can you give us an update on the status of your hand?

Benji Radach: Basically, you have your pointer finger bone in your hand, and it goes back through your hand and then right behind your hand bone you have this square bone; sometimes your hand bone will go up over it or underneath it. Mine was dead center (when I punched Scott) and it so it just exploded the bone behind it and also broke the hand bone, so I pretty much shattered my hand.

I went in and had surgery on Monday. The doctor put a metal plate in, four screws, and pieced back together the square bone behind the hand bone and put four screws in that. It’s healing up right now and hopefully I’ll be back to action here shortly.

MMAWeekly: Did they give you a prognosis for recovery?

Benji Radach: They said six to 12 weeks, depending on how it goes. I’m just going to take my time on it. I’ll just jump rope and do the little things as soon as I possibly can. I can’t punch anything for a while, probably for a good eight weeks at least.

MMAWeekly: Talking about the fight itself, do you know when the injury occurred?

Benji Radach: It was definitely the first round. I remember hitting him really, really hard on the ground, so it may have been when I was hitting him on the ground. For the rest of the fight, the second and third (rounds), I was fighting with a broken hand. Every time I made a fist I could feel it crunching around. Every time I hit him it crunched and it was just nasty.

MMAWeekly: Do you feel the injury affected the outcome of the fight?

Benji Radach: I’m sure it did. There are several times I knew I hurt him and I just felt like I couldn’t take advantage of it. The only thing that I’m a little upset about is that I think it was a quick stoppage. I was recovering after that first shot and I went down to my side. I was coming back up and he socked me straight down square in the back of my head.

(The rules) you can’t hit anybody in the back of the head, ear-to-ear, and it was dead center in the back of my head, and the ref stopped it. I don’t think that was quite right. Not to mention, I had him on ice skates all night, and had him to where they should have stopped it a few times and never did. I get caught with one shot, go down and am on the way to recovery, and the ref stops it – it’s kind of ridiculous – I thought.

MMAWeekly: Do you think the strike to the back of your head was deliberate, or something that just happened in the heat of the moment?

Benji Radach: I think it was in the heat of the moment, but it was still an illegal shot. If you’re going to punch a guy and see all your targets, that’s not a target you’re gonna pick. I’ve been in the heat of the moment many, many times and I don’t pick the back of the head to him them. I would have done like an uppercut or side to side or pick underneath his arm to his face or hit him in the ribs or something.

MMAWeekly: Would you like a rematch with Scott when you return?

Benji Radach: I’d love to fight him again, there’s no doubt about that. Anybody that I lose to, I’d love to fight again. I don’t think it was a loss in my mind. I pretty much dominated the whole fight, and should have been given the same amount of time to recover as he did. Especially with the punch square in the back of the head, that was kind of an illegal shot in the first place.

MMAWeekly: What do you see for yourself when you return?

Benji Radach: I want to get back in there as soon as this hand is nice and healed up, as soon as I can punch again and feel good with it. Maybe I can get a fight at the end of the summer or early after that.

MMAWeekly: Thanks for taking time out for us, Benji. Is there anything you want to say in conclusion?

Benji Radach: I want to say a big thanks to Tapout and Full Tilt Poker. I went to the memorial service (for Tapout founder Charles “Mask” Lewis, Jr.) on the 14th and it was quite the service. It was good to be there and be a part of it. I’ll be back as soon as possible, throwing down and hopefully getting some more of those Fight of the Night (honors) racked up.

Rampage Jackson: A fight with ‘big mouth’ Rashad would be ‘boring’

“I did the UFC a favor and fought Jardine because Rashad wouldn’t fight me; that’s why I fought Jardine, because I was supposed to fight Rashad after the fight with Wanderlei. Since Rashad got a big mouth and got in my face, you already know who I want to fight. I’m thinking it might be a boring fight, but what do I know?”

MFC 21: Emanuel Newton to defend light heavyweight title against Trevor Prangley at ‘Hard Knocks’

Two fighters riding incredible streaks will face each other for the Maximum Fighting Championship’s light heavyweight title at MFC 21: Hard Knocks.

Reigning champ Emanuel “The Hardcore Kid” Newton (13-3) will defend his title for the first time against the well-accomplished Trevor Prangley (19-5). The two will battle for the championship belt on Friday, May 15 at the River Cree Resort and Casino just outside Edmonton, Alberta. MFC 21: Hard Knocks will air live on HDNet Fights throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Newton captured the 205-pound crown at MFC 19 with a convincing five-round decision over former champion Roger “The Hulk” Hollett. That victory stretched Newton’s undefeated streak to 11 straight fights and the Norwalk, California, native has not lost since 2004.

The 25-year-old, who will have MFC lightweight champion Antonio McKee in his corner, made an immediate splash in the organization back at MFC 18 when he mowed over David Heath en route to a second-round submission victory.

Meanwhile Prangley, who is originally from Cape Town, South Africa, has won eight of his last nine fights and holds career wins over such notables as Ultimate Fighter reality show winner Travis Lutter, Yuki Kondo, and Chael Sonnen.

“This is a very strong matchup - two fighters who will get into the ring, square off and go to war,” noted MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich.

“Emanuel Newton has proven himself against tough competition before and he is prepared to show again that he is the best light heavyweight in the MFC. But to do so, he is going to have to beat a very dangerous opponent in Trevor Prangley. Our fans deserve to see the best title fight we could put together and the winner of the fight will truly deserve to wear the MFC championship belt.”

The Newton/Prangley title fight will be one of three bouts that will be officiated by one of the most-recognizable faces in all of mixed martial arts as “Big” John McCarthy, a veteran of 535 bouts in the UFC, will be the head referee for the event.

McCarthy, the former head instructor of tactical self-defense at the Los Angeles Police Academy, is also one of the premier instructors in martial arts and runs his own training center in Valencia, California. McCarthy, who holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, is also the lead trainer of the only internationally recognized mixed martial arts officiating and judging certification program.

Other bouts already signed for MFC 21: Hard Knocks include:

David Heath (11-4) vs. Travis Galbraith (16-6), light heavyweight

Marvin Eastman (15-9) vs. Aron Lofton (6-1), light heavyweight

Bryan Baker (9-1) vs. Brad Zazulak (6-0), middleweight

Tickets for MFC 21: Hard Knocks are going fast. Remaining tickets can be purchased by calling the MFC Ticket Hotline at (780) 504-2024 or through Ticketmaster at (780) 451-8000, www.ticketmaster.ca, and Ticketmaster outlets.

Michael Lynch Resigns From WAMMA, Sam Caplan Promoted to Interim COO

Orlando, Florida -- The World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts (WAMMA/www.GoWAMMA.com) announced Thursday that noted trial attorney Michael Lynch has resigned from the organization as its Chief Operating Officer.

Lynch was a founding member of WAMMA and had served as the fighter and fan-forward MMA sanctioning body's COO since its inception in September of 2007.

"We are sad to lose Mike, as he was one of the driving forces in helping launch WAMMA from a concept into a living, breathing organization," said WAMMA CEO Dave Szady, a 33-year veteran of the FBI. "Under Mike's watch we've crowned undisputed champions at heavyweight and lightweight and have developed numerous partnerships with high-profile companies in the industry."

According to Szady, Lynch is leaving under amicable terms in order to pursue a new opportunity within the mixed martial arts industry. For Lynch, his decision to leave his day-to-day role with WAMMA comes with mixed emotions.

"I have made incredible friends during my time here at WAMMA and wish the organization the very best," said Lynch. "Over the past year and a half, WAMMA has become ideally positioned within the MMA community. Our rankings are the gold standard of the industry and our WAMMA belts have become synonymous with the very best in the sport. I am confident that WAMMA will be an important part of the MMA landscape for the long-term. Thank you to all the fans, fighters, promotions, partners and friends that have helped make WAMMA a success."

Lynch will remain active with WAMMA as a consultant and will also continue as one of the organization's leading shareholders. He did not elaborate on his future plans but has indicated that the new opportunity was an exciting online venture and that will entail of combination of MMA, fun and skill. Lynch said he expects an announcement within the next 60 days.

"Folks will be very excited to see what I have in store," he added.

Sam Caplan, recently promoted to the position of Vice President of the organization's male and female top ten fighter rankings, has been asked to serve as an interim replacement for the next three months.

Caplan is the founding owner and president of Combat Sports Media, LLC., the parent company of the popular MMA web site FiveOuncesOfPain.com. He will continue to preside over Combat Sports Media during his interim term but will be taking a leave of absence from his editorial duties at Five Ounces of Pain.

"Mike's departure comes at a crucial time for WAMMA and we felt that now is not the right time for an exhaustive search to find his replacement," Szady began. "We're very fortunate that we have someone as experienced as Sam that is able to step up on an interim basis. He's already been an integral part of our growth and we believe he can help WAMMA continue to expand."

According to Szady, Caplan is a candidate to be named Lynch's permanent replacement at the end of his three-month term.

"Sam came highly recommended and members of our board wanted Sam to accept the position on a permanent basis," Szady commented. "However, being COO of WAMMA is a full-time job and Sam is involved in several other projects at this time. Sam has pledged that he will either be prepared to accept the role on a full-time basis in three months or be an active part in helping secure a permanent replacement."

Lynch was pleased to learn of the news that Caplan has agreed to serve as his replacement.

"Being COO of WAMMA is a unique position that not everyone is qualified for. However, Sam has a tremendous reputation within the industry and I couldn't think of a better replacement," Lynch stated. "Sam has been involved with us since day one and since that time his role has increased steadily over the past year and a half. WAMMA is in good hands."

Caplan believes that WAMMA's involvement in the sport of MMA can help contribute to is growth and is looking forward to serving in his new role.

"I consider Mike a friend and not to have him with us on a day-to-day basis is disappointing," said Caplan, before adding, "Thanks to his tremendous sacrifices, WAMMA has gone very far in a relative short period of time. We've made a lot of progress towards our goal of crowning undisputed champions in every major weight class and the last thing I want for WAMMA is to see it lose momentum. My primary motivation for getting involved with WAMMA was that I believed it could serve as a tremendous boon to the industry and I want to do my part in contributing to the movement."

White says why Arona is not in the UFC

One of the responsible of making MMA one of the biggest sports around the world, Dana White is the man behind the UFC, biggest organization in the world. Invited by TATAME Magazine, the president spoke with Cristiane Ripari and, among other subjects, replied Ricardo Arona’s interview at #152 edition, when he said he heard some guys saying he wasn’t in the UFC because they were scared of him there beating everybody.

Answering this question, White replied: “I don’t think I have been worried about Arona beating everybody. Didn’t Arona just loose? I think Arona just lost recently. There’s no reason I have been like: “Oh God Arona could beat everybody”, or… You know, if I thought Arona was gonna beat everybody he would be here right now”, said White, who already revealed who he’d like to face in a MMA fight. “I’d fight Arona first because I think he sucks! (Laughs). That’s a tough question. I’m not going to answer that one”.

UFC planning November show in Boston; New York and Toronto in early 2010

MONTREAL - A trio of new host cities will get Ultimate Fighting Championship events later this year or in early 2010 if Dana White gets his way.

The UFC president, apparently confident that legislation will be in place in time, has targeted Boston, New York City and Toronto for upcoming UFC shows.

White laid out the plans during today's UFC 97 pre-event press conference.

White, born and raised near Boston, has long publicly shared his interest in taking the UFC to the state, a hotbed for MMA that has hosted a past tryout for "The Ultimate Fighter." However, despite the sport's popularity in the state, and though some events are held in the state, Massachusetts does not currently regulate MMA.

UFC officials are involved in the political push, though, and regulation is considered likely very soon.

"I'm pretty confident we're going to do an event in Boston, Mass., at the Boston Garden in November," White said.

The Garden, formally known as the TD Banknorth Garden, is home to the NBA's Boston Celtics and NHL's Boston Bruins and can accommodate nearly 20,000 spectators.

Although Boston boasts a population of about 610,000 (making it the 21st largest city in the U.S.), its greater metro area includes nearly five million people, making it potentially one of the most lucrative markets available to the UFC.

However, bigger even than Boston is New York City. The UFC has been on the frontlines in the fight to get MMA sanctioned in the state of New York, though a few (but vocal) opponents have provided hurdles. Still, most are optimistic that legislation will pass and the state, the third most populous in the country (19.5 million residents), will begin MMA regulation by year's end.

White and Co. are ready to capitalize once the doors open. The same goes for Toronto, which is Canada's most populous city with 2.5 million residents (and 5.6 million in the metro area).

"The first of the year, (we want to do a show in) New York, and I'm hoping we have Toronto done before New York," White said.

White's ultimate goal is to host a NYC event at the legendary Madison Square Garden, a 20,000-seat arena in the heart of the city. However, since arriving in Canada on Wednesday, fans have been adamant that Toronto could do even better.

"The people up here tell me, 'If you go to Toronto, you could do 60,000 seats,'" White said. "People tell me crazy stuff about going to Toronto.

"As fast as we sell out here (in Montreal), maybe we could do 30,000 in Toronto."

Dana White on UFC's European plans: "We're coming to France definitely"

MONTREAL - Add France to the growing list of countries that will soon host its first Ultimate Fighting Championship event.

UFC President Dana White on Thursday said emphatically the organization will soon hold an event in the country, which is home to current UFC fighters such as Cheick Kongo and UFC 97 competitor Xavier Foupa-Pokam.

"We're coming to France," White said at Thursday's UFC 97 pre-event press conference when questioned by a French reporter. "There's no doubt about it."

France currently doesn't regulate the sport, but as with the organization's U.K. shows, the UFC itself could oversee a show in France. UFC Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Marc Ratner, the former head of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, regulates drug testing, officiating and other aspects of the U.K. shows that are traditionally sanctioned by U.S. athletic commissions during domestic events.

MMA had long been barred in France, though an official ban was lifted in 2008.

In addition to Kongo and Foupa-Pokam, the country has produced former UFC fighter Jess Liaudin and PRIDE/EliteXC veteran Cyrille "The Snake" Diabate. As MMA continues its explosive growth throughout Europe, France continues developing top talent, though fighters have been forced to leave the country to compete professionally.

White, though, is confident a French event would only spur continued growth and possibly open the door for a booming French MMA scene.

"I've been talking to people here in Montreal since I got here (on Wednesday)," White said. "They're saying, 'Since you did the first event here in Montreal, mixed-martial-arts awareness has grown so much. There's so many more gyms now, and so many more people are talking about it, covering it.'

"I think that's what happens when we go in a (new) area."

As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) reported in February, the UFC recently inked a deal with the French TV station RTL9, which now airs a variety of UFC-related programming.

"It's doing very, very well on TV," White said.

France would become eighth country, after Germany (for UFC 99), to host a UFC event. The current list includes the U.S., Japan, Brazil, the U.K., Canada and Ireland.

White didn't share a specific date but said it'd come after the organization's June debut in Germany.

"We're in Germany now, and France is next," White said.

Blanco vs. Mori, Osawa vs. Ishibashi added to "Sengoku Eighth Battle"

Sengoku Training Players Maximo "Makishi" Blanco (2-1-1) and Shigeki Osawa (2-0), who each competed at an April 5 Pancrase event, have both been added to World Victory Road's "Sengoku Eighth Battle."

The Japanese-based organization announced Blanco will face Akihiko Mori (6-6-1) in a lightweight bout, while Osawa will meet Kota Ishibashi (0-3) in an event-opening featherweight contest.

Sengoku Eighth Battle takes place May 2 at the National Yoyogi Stadium in Tokyo, Japan.

The event, which airs on HDNet, also features the second-round of the organization's featherweight grand prix.

Blanco and Osawa are both decorated amateur wrestlers who train out of the famed Yoshida Dojo in Japan. The two were designated as "Sengoku Training Players" in July 2008.

Sengoku has committed to assisting its designated fighters with a positive training environment, a job and an opportunity to compete in smaller shows in order to develop their skills while targeting Sengoku appearances.

Ishibashi turned pro in June 2007. He has dropped three-straight unanimous decisions in DEEP to open his career.

Mori is a DEEP, K-1 HERO'S and Pancrase veteran. The 34-year-old last fought in an August 2008 decision loss to Tae Kyun Kim and is currently on a two-fight losing streak.

Sengoku also revealed they would be adding one more bout to the May 2 event. An announcement is expected to made shortly.

Brazilian slugger Luis Cane predicting UFC 97 finish of Steve Cantwell

Brazilian slugger Luis Cane (9-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) is a man of few words. He prefers to let his hands do the talking.

And in his main-card opening bout with Steve Cantwell (7-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) at UFC 97 in Montreal, Cane plans to let his hands ask for a title shot.

"This fight is an important step," Cane recently told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "I really want to be among the top of the division, and this fight should pave the way to putting me there."

With eight of his nine wins coming by knockout or TKO, Cane has quickly earned a reputation as a fearsome striker. His right hand slap to the face of former UFC fighter Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou at UFC 89 – shortly before rocking him with a straight left – preceded his second consecutive TKO win in the UFC.

Cane believes he'll look even better on Saturday night.

"That is a normal move I use," Cane said. "The last fight I fought with an injury, but now I am 100 percent. I trained very hard for this fight, and fans should see a better Luis Cane."

Cantwell has quickly developed a reputation of his own, closing out his run in the WEC as that organization's final light heavyweight champion. While Cantwell has three career TKO wins of his own, Cane enters the bout unconcerned.

"He is a talented and tough guy, but I am not worried about being hit hard," Cane said. "I will impose my game.

"I am accustomed to being faced with hard hitters, so I won't be intimidated. But who knows? It's MMA, so maybe I'll get the chance to show my ground game."

Cane does own one submission victory in his career. Of course, his opponent tapped out due to a series of brutal soccer kicks from "Banha."

Meanwhile, Cantwell earned a bit of infamy with his wild celebration after injuring Razak Al-Hassan's arm in a gruesome technical submission win. Cane said he's comfortable testing Cantwell's skills on the mat.

"[Cantwell] is a young guy, and he got caught up in the moment," Cane said. "But I think I have developed completely as I fight. Whoever was in doubt before now knows who I am and what I can do."

With his lone career loss coming via disqualification to James Irvin in his UFC debut, a win over Cantwell would be Cane's third-straight in the organization. While the Brazilian stopped short of a firm prediction, Cane believes the bout could be a highlight of the evening.

"I am prepared give my best and that this will be a good fight for the fans," Cane said.

"It won't go to the end."

UFC Quick Quote: Brian Stann ‘winning every part’ of his fight against Krzysztof Soszynski

“I’ve done all the right things in the past seven months to get ready for this fight and move myself to where I need to be. I got the coaches I needed so I can come in here, compete and do well, which is what I’m going to do. I’ve been home probably a total of four weeks since December 2008. The rest of the time has been spent in Albuquerque, N.M., at Greg Jackson’s. I helped Rashad get ready for Forrest and Keith Jardine get ready for Quinton. I’ve been down there helping everyone else and now the last two months everyone is helping me. It’s just been great — they’ve all been there for me through thick and thin…. We’ll probably test the waters for 10 or 20 seconds and then get after it. I see this fight going everywhere and I see myself winning every part where it goes to, whether it’s on the ground wrestling or standing up…. I know I am probably going to get booed out of the stadium, but I have a lot of respect for these fans in Montreal…. He’s their hometown guy and they should root for him. But it’s not going to have any impact on the outcome of the bout whatsoever.”

Bellator Spotlight: Edwin Aguilar

For Bellator Middleweight contender Edwin Aguilar, winning a shot at another championship title has been the only thing on his mind. He will compete in the first round of Bellator Fighting Championships’ Middleweight tournament on Friday, April 17th. The Mexican-native, Aguilar spoke candidly about his training and game plan for his bout against Yosmany Cabezas. His focus for this matchup will be controlling the fight and staying off the ground to force his opponent to contend with Aguilar’s outstanding striking ability.

“I love a good fight against a big fighter,” said Aguilar, in a pre-weigh in interview. “I like to stay on my feet and create a fight that is a real show for the people.”

The world-class striker is an icon in Mexico where had spent the past 15 years dominating competitors and earning a reputation as a vicious fighter. The proud Mexican national who lives on the border to the US also explained that he is excited about the opportunity that Bellator brings to him along with the exclusive TV agreement with ESPN Deportes, and the ability this creates to reach the Latino fans.

When getting a little bit more personal, Aguilar said, “I’m single…but I haven’t even had time to look because I have been focused on my training.”

Aguilar will be competing in Bellator III on Friday April 17th at the Lloyd Noble Center, located on the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman, Okla. The event will be broadcast nationally on ESPN Deportes in Spanish, as well as on Bellator.com in English.

Countdown and TUF Ratings News

MMAPayout.com has learned that TUF Season 9 Episode 3 earned a 0.9 household rating, with a 1.2 in Men 18-49, a .9 in People 18-49, a 1.13 in Men 18-34, and an average audience of 1.2 million viewers.

Qtr hours:

.9
.9
.9
1.0

The .9 marks a 25% ratings decline since the debut, and mirrors the rating trend from last season. The next few weeks should be key. The show may see a ratings rebound like last season (one precipitated by the Junie Browning antics) or they may level off at a lower level. The Spike producers who work on TUF are old hands at this game, though, so I wouldn’t go so far as to write off the show ratings-wise just yet. One or two controversial rabbits may be still left in the hat to be pulled for a ratings bump.

MMAPayout.com also learned that the Countdown to UFC 97 program that debuted on Monday night drew 774,000 viewers. This is an extremely strong number and may portend of good things for the performance of the card on PPV. Monday night airings generally pull smaller numbers than what the Countdown shows receive in their usual Thursday night slot. The past few Monday night debuts have drawn in the 500k viewer range (including Lesnar v Couture),so the 700k figure looks especially strong.

Bellator Spotlight: Dave Menne

Former UFC champion beats Lyme disease, contends for Bellator title

To Dave Menne, the upcoming bout in the first-round of Bellator’s tournament is more than the average fight. This former UFC champion and veteran of 60 professional fights has a unique chance to overcome adversity and return to peak form as a top contender in Bellator Fighting Championships’ Welterweight tournament.

Over the last seven years, Dave has fought in organizations and venues across the globe, including fighting to decisions against top 5 Welterweights Josh Koscheck and Jake Shields. It was later learned that during those fights and the several months of training leading up to them, Dave was also fighting Lyme disease, a serious and sometimes fatal infection known to cause extreme fatigue . Demonstrating a true sign of strength and endurance, Dave overcame the disease and became one of the most prominent fighters in MMA.

Menne first became a Champion in 2001 when he defeated Gil Castillo to become the first-ever UFC Middleweight champion. Now Menne has the opportunity to once again breakdown barriers and claim the first ever Bellator Welterweight title, an honor that would secure the 34 year-old fighter’s place in MMA history.

Menne will face undefeated French standout fighter Norman Paraisy in round one of the single elimination tournament during Bellator III. The winner of Menne/Paraisy will advance on to the semi-final round, joining both Lyman Good and Jorge Ortiz, for a chance at $50,000.

Bellator III will be on Friday April 17th at the Lloyd Noble Center, located on the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman, Okla. The event will be broadcast nationally on ESPN Deportes in Spanish, as well as on Bellator.com in English.

Wanderlei bets on Thales against Anderson

After the knockout loss to Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 92, Wanderlei Silva decided to move down to middleweight division, and will face the former champion Rich Franklin at UFC 99. After the fight, the Brazilian is anxious to watch two fights at UFC 97, which takes place tomorrow at Canada. Ex-team partners at Chute Boxe academy, Wanderlei and Anderson Silva hadn’t much contact since then, and Wanderlei spoke about the title fight with Thales Leites.

“Everybody is saying that Anderson will beat Thales easily, that Thales won’t have any chances. Thales is a tall guy, a young kid, he’s in a great team and André (Pedereiras) is one of the best MMA coaches in the world… This is a life time opportunity for him. He’s young, trained his whole life and his Jiu-Jitsu is different… His BJJ is in another level… If the fight goes to the ground, Thales will get him”, bets the Axe Murderer, commenting on Maurício “Shogun” vs. Chuck Liddell, in the co-main event.

“If Shogun shows up life everybody knows, he’ll demolish Chuck Liddell, just like he did against Quinton Jackson at Pride. He beated everybody there, one after the another, Overeem, Arona, everybody. If he comes back in that shape, he’ll shock the world”, says Wanderlei. But, there’s an if. “If he didn’t prepared himself well, it’s more dangerous, because Liddell is tall, punches hard, the glove is small and you have to be careful with the defense, because Shogun’s style is go on top of the guy and the other’s is to fight on the counter punching”, analyzes Wanderlei, who went to Montreal today to watch the show.

Latest On CroCop! DREAM In May Or July Likely

Mirko Filipovic is likely to once again face Dutchmen Alistair Overeem. Though the the fight is yet to be made official, its the most likely scenario for the Croatian.

Cro Cop confirmed that he had started boxing training and said that he felt highly motivated for his next challenge. He indicated that he would be ready to fight in a month Dream.

“”I feel superb, the movement is there, my heart is in it. My recovery is ahead of schedule. I’ll probably complete in Dream 9 in May or July” said Cro Cop speaking with Nova TV.
Mirko reiterated that he had no immediate plans to walk away from the sport even though he is aware that his career is entering the last phase. This final phase could last anywhere from ten to fifteen more fights but according to Mirko this will be the most productive part of his career.

“Often in past I’ve had problems motivating myself to train. But I realized that when i end it all a part of me will die. Some people think that I fight for money, this is not so. Money is the least important factor in my motivation “.
“I’ve used this break to give my mind a good rest and now I have a clear look on my career and which paths to take. The retirement is not an option ” he said on his official blog last month.

Overeem is the current Strikeforce heavyweight champion and has made plants to depend his title in June most likely against a former member of Team Cro Cop, Fabricio Werdum.

Cro Cop long term plans however still remain unclear. Five MMA organizations in total (Three US based and two Japanese) have offers on the table.

“July is still a long way off. In the next few days I will know more about my schedule for 2009. I want to fight at least another four times this year, and I plan to fight five times in 2010.” – said an enthusiastic Cro Cop.
