Edison Miranda Stops Vegas in Five at The York Hall in London
By Mark Vester

Super middleweight Edison Miranda (32-3, 28 KOs) returned to action at the York Hall in in London, England and stopped Joey Vegas (11-5-1, 4 KOs) in five bruising rounds. Miranda came out in the first with the work "knockout" on his mind as he came forward and threw power punches with Vegas trying to stay away and looking to avoid anything coming his way.

In the third, Miranda nearly put Vegas away with a barrage that sent him down twice. He was able to survive but could not get away from another barrage in the fifth that saw the ref step in and stop the action.

The win is the second of 2009 and the second since last August's knockout loss to Arthur Abraham.

Ellerbe Denies Mayweather Comeback, Family Confirms

By Mark Vester

There are conflicts over the reports swirling around that point to Floyd Mayweather Jr. making a boxing comeback with the tentative date of July 11 on HBO. Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather's close friend, adviser and public mouthpiece, spoke with Mayweather's hometown paper, The Grand Rapids Press , and denied recent reports of a Mayweather comeback. He confirmed that Mayweather is training in his Las Vegas gym - but only to stay in shape.

"Floyd does what he does. He always goes to the gym and keeps himself in shape (from a fitness standpoint)," Ellerbe said.

On the other end, Mayweather's grandmother, Bernice, says her grandson is indeed training for a comeback. In the past Mayweather's family members have told newspapers that Floyd was coming back - and then he didn't. She claims that Roger Mayweather, Floyd's trainer and uncle, is in the gym with him.

"He's going to be fighting again," Bernice Mayweather said. "He's in the gym training right now

Klitschko vs. Gomez - Ring Problem is Fixed: Fight On

The fight is on!” states ARENA-CEO Ahmet Öner after a long meeting with members of the Klitschko management group and K2 promotions regarding the ring size for tomorrow’s WBC heavyweight championship between Vitali Klitschko and Juan Carlos Gomez.

Less than 24 hours before the big fight a measurement of the ring showed that it was almost 4 feet shorter than allowed by the WBC rules. “I have been at the venue personally”, says Öner. “The Klitschko management group and K2 promotions are still young companies and mistakes do happen. As we are confident that Juan will beat Vitali we definitely want this fight to happen; after years of boredom we want the world to see a great heavyweight championship again. So we helped them to work out a solution for the ring. Everything is set now and ready to go.”

Shane Mosley is Not Interested in a Fight With Andre Berto

By Mark Vester

WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley has no interest in title unifications - he only wants the big money. After being unable to secure fights Floyd Mayweather Jr and Miguel Cotto, Mosley told Golden Boy Promotions CEO, Richard Schaefer, that he is not interested in a unification bout with undefeated WBC champion Andre Berto.

According to Schaefer, Mosley plans to sit back and attempt to fight the winners of Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton on May 2 and Miguel Cotto-Joshua Clottey on June 13.

"He only wants mega-fights," Schaefer told The Los Angeles Times .

That means Mosley will be out of action until at least the end of the year. There is talk that Mayweather will return to the ring as early as July 11 but Schaefer told the paper that he won't believe any of the rumors until Floyd himself announces a return. Even if Floyd does come back, it's unlikely that Mosley will be his return opponent.

"These are speculations. I'll believe it when Floyd says, 'I'm back.' I haven't heard that. So it's not something we're considering at this time. At this point, I can't get Shane a fight against someone who doesn't want to fight him, so we'll wait," Schaefer said

yep. Gotta question his conditioning, seemed wobbly after round 3. I mean you're up against Vitali Klitschko, who has an iron chin so you gotta plan on going all 12 rounds if you want to win. But obviously more than anything klitschko was just too big for him. oh well, at least gomez showed some heart by continuing a couple times at the end when it could have easily been stopped.

Hatton Wants Marquez Next, Not Floyd Mayweather Jr.

By Mark Vester

Rumors of a boxing comeback by Floyd Mayweather Jr. continue. Everything seems to point to a return on July 11, and then a year-end fight with the winner of the May 2 junior welterweight mega-bout between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton. According to Hatton, Mayweather is not the next fight on his list. If he beats Pacquiao in May, he would like to fight Juan Manuel Marquez, who is moving up to junior welterweight. Hatton still wants a rematch with Mayweather. He would like the rematch to take place on UK soil in the summer of 2010.

“If I beat Pacquiao I’d like to fight Marquez. Then next summer I’d love an open-air fight at Wembley Stadium against Floyd Mayweather Jr. I don’t want to be an old man in an armchair with my pipe and slippers still blaming the referee for what happened in the first fight,” Hatton said.

Making a fight between Hatton and Marquez would be easy as both of them are promoted by Golden Boy Promotions. If Hatton happens to beat Pacquiao, he may not get Marquez in the near future. If Mayweather happens to make his tentative return in July, Marquez could become the opponent. Many insiders are listing Juan as the frontrunner opponent to land that fight - if Floyd returns. If that happens, Hatton may have to settle for Mayweather - sooner than later. If Hatton beats Pacquiao and Mayweather beats Marquez, their rematch may happen at the end of the year - and probably on American soil

Klitschko Wants Valuev To Step Up, Unify The Division

By Mark Vester

After his ninth round knockout of mandatory challenger Juan Carlos Gomez in Germany, the WBC champion Vitali Klitschko would re-issue his challenge to WBA champ Nikolai Valuev. Vitali has the WBC title and his younger brother Wladimir holds the WBO/IBF titles.

"The Klitschko brothers wants to have all four of the heavyweight titles. We have three and only one is left. I want to fight Nikolai Valuev," Vitali would say.

Valuev, standing at 7'0, is one of the few fighters who are actually bigger than the 6'7 Vitali Klitschko. The fight is not possible until Valuev meets and wins his next obligation, a mandatory rematch with unbeaten Ruslan Chagaev. Putting Valuev's last performance into consideration, the close win over the aged Evander Holyfield in 2008, I wouldn't hold my breath on Valuev beating Chagaev.

Vitali may not even be champion if the WBC gets their way. They ordered him to fight former champ Oleg Maskaev next. Vitali and K2 are doing everything in their power to fight the WBC's ruling and if the sanctioning body prevails and Klitschko fails to fight Maskaev - he may get stripped

Dunne Knocks Out Cordoba in a War, Wins WBA Belt

By Mark Vester

At The O2 in Dublin, Ireland, Bernard Dunne (28-1, 15KOs) finally showed his potential by knocking out Ricardo Cordoba (34-2, 21KOs) in the eleventh round to capture the WBA "regular" super bantamweight title. Celestino Caballero is the super champion of the WBA because he also owns the IBF's version. The announcers called it one of greatest fights in Irish boxing history.

Dunne came out to a fast start in the early going and nearly put Cordoba away in the third after hurting him and putting him down. A bleeding Cordoba came back in the fifth, sending Dunne down twice and changing the direction of the fight. Dunne would fight his way back in and sent Cordoba down three times in the eleventh and ended the fight.

Cordoba was down for several minutes. Ringside doctors were treating Cordoba in the ring and he was taken out on a stretcher. The fight announcers said that he should be fine.

Bernard Hopkins, Can He Beat Tomasz Adamek?

by James Slater - The fight has not been signed as of yet, but strong indications from various sources on the internet say IBF cruiserweight champion Tomasz Adamek of Poland will meet Philly legend Bernard Hopkins this summer. The date being talked about is July 11th, and the fight may take place at Madison Square Garden, N.Y. Once again showing he is a real legend, one who is willing, even at the age of 44, to meet the best, "B-Hop" will take yet another risky challenge. Can he win?

Adamek, as we know, is not a pure boxer, but he is incredibly tough, can hit hard and he has great stamina and desire to win. And he has yet to lose a fight as a cruiserweight.. Yet Hopkins, as he has proven to us time and again, is no ordinary fighter. How many times has he made us eat our words now? I've lost count. As such only a fool would bet against 'Nard picking up a belt at cruiserweight and adding it to the other titles he already has on his quite amazing resume.

On the other hand, at age 44, Hopkins, by continuing to fight the best, is pushing his luck each and every time he climbs through the ropes. Even as astonishing a fighter as he cannot go on forever. We saw how tired Hopkins looked in the latter stages of his last fight against a physically stronger opponent who was able to make it his kind of fight last April, when Bernard lost a spilt decision against Joe Calzaghe. Will Adamek, the twelve year younger man and the natural cruiserweight, be able to tire out the better boxer if and when they meet in the summer?

Against Kelly Pavlik, in his most recent fight in which he tore up the formbook, Hopkins was very much able to make it his kind of fight, and this may have been at least partly due to the fact that against "The Ghost" it was he who was more suited to the weight the fight was held at. Adamek, who will not be pushed around at 200-pounds, will surely be a totally different story, even though it's debatable as to who the better fighter is between he and Pavlik.

Hopkins' game-plan will definitely be to out-smart and out-point Adamek, as opposed to going out for a KO or stoppage. As iron-jawed as he is, Hopkins stopping the Polish warrior really would be something that would send shockwaves around the sporting world! But Adamek will look to counter his opponent's tactics of picking up points by out-working him in every single round. In other words, Adamek will look to tire the old man out by refusing to let him breath for a single second of a single minute of a single round. As we have yet to see how Hopkins will carry the 200-pound weight limit, we don't know how strong he will be boxing at the highest poundage he will have entered the ring at in his entire, 21 year, pro career.

If he is bullied, out-punched and ultimately out-scored, fans everywhere will be saying Hopkins did push his luck too far when he could easily have retired with nothing more to prove. Any fight for any fighter is something of a gamble; for the great Bernard Hopkins, in taking on the wannabe great Tomasz Adamek, this fight is surely the biggest gamble yet taken in an incredible career!

The Germans love their Klitschko's. Whopping TV-figures!

So maybe the Klitschko's are disliked in America, but in their adopted home of Germany they are beloved. A whopping 11.5 million viewers tuned in to watch Vitali crush Juan Carlos Gomez! That's about 54% of the total market!

Roy Jones Eyes Jermain Taylor, Super Middleweight Return

By Rick Reeno

A drop in weight for Roy Jones Jr? Topping last Saturday's pay-per-view in Pensacola, Florida, Jones dispatched of Omar Sheika in five rounds. During the post-fight festivities, Jones told reporters that he might consider a move to the super middleweight division for a potential fight with Jermain Taylor.

Taylor will have his hands full on April 25th when he challenges undefeated Carl Froch for his WBC title. A fight between Jones and Taylor was discussed in 2007 at the catch-weight of 170-pounds. Negotiations broke when Taylor decided to make a mandatory defense against Kelly Pavlik.

While Taylor continues to train for his title opportunity in April, Jones is probably going to take another fight to stay busy. Several names have been thrown around, including fellow Floridian Jeff Lacy. Now a promotional free agent after parting with Golden Boy Promotions, Lacy can deal directly with Jones and the fight can do some decent business in Florida. Lacy is taking a stay-busy fight on April 10 at the Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida. Coincidently, Lacy returns after suffering a twelve round decision loss to Taylor.

Taylor's promoter, Lou DiBella, is open to making a fight with Jones.

"First we have to worry about Froch. If he we get past Froch, we are more than happy to fight Jones. He may not be the Roy Jones of old, but he is still a tough fighter," DiBella said

WBC Legal Battle Over Use of Belt at Pacquiao-Hatton

By Ronnie Nathanielsz

An extremely disappointed WBC president Don Jose Sulaiman says he plans legal action to prevent Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao from using the WBC belt in the ring when he fights Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton in Las Vegas on May 2.

In an overseas telephone conversation with BoxingScene.com, insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports, Sulaiman said he will institute legal action “to prohibit Pacquiao from wearing any WBC belt in the ring” as he has always done in the past.

Sulaiman said Pacquiao’s lawyer Franklin “Jeng” Gacal who together with Pacquiao had committed some months ago to pay the overdue amount of $80,000 to the WBC for sanction fees on the rematch against Juan Manuel Marquez and the Oscar De La Hoya fight, had ignored his letters which Sulaiman said was “very, very depressing.”

Don Jose said he doesn’t want to take any legal action in the wake of the “unbelievable” behavior of Gacal but said “we have no choice” much as we “hate to do that.”

He said all this time the WBC has done everything to support Pacquiao saying “all of his (Pacquiao’s) career he gained popularity with the WBC” beginning with his WBC flyweight championship victory over Chatchai Sasakul in Thailand in December 1998.

In a letter dated March 13, Sulaiman told Gacal he was “extremely surprised for your lack of courtesy of not responding to my several communications, as well as the lack of compliance with the financial agreements, which were based on your offers and our acceptance, which has made me feel like a beggar.” Gacal claimed he never received the letter and requested us to forward our copy to him which we did. But Sulaiman said there has been no response at all from the Pacquiao lawyer.

Sulaiman was visibly upset because he said “ the WBC has always expressed its pride of Manny Pacquiao to have become the best pound per pound fighter, with the opportunities and the worldwide prestige of the green and gold WBC belt, which he has also used with pride for many years

Klitschko vs. Haye To Be Officially Announced, Says Boente

By Mark Vester

It appears both sides have agreed to just about everything. According to Bernd Boente, manager of WBO/IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, the fight with David Haye is nearly done and the two sides are probably going to officially announce the fight in the next few days - he hopes. Negotiations have been ongoing for the last three months. The fight will take place on June 20.

"We have reached agreement on the most important points and we hope to be able to officially announce the fight next week," said Bernd Boente to Sky Sports .

One of the few points they have not been able to agree on - is the site. They are looking at four possible venues in the UK and Germany. A venue based in Germany is the probably host to the event. That appears to be the final piece of the puzzle.

"There are four sites still in competition to host the fight, which will probably not be in Great Britain, but rather in Germany," Boente said.
