Oregon considers reinstating LeGarrette Blount

blount.jpgFileOregon running back LeGarrette Blount, suspended for the season after his postgame tirade at Boise State on Sept. 3, could be reinstated after all.
Ducks coach Chip Kelly will discuss Blount's status after today's practice, and a release Thursday night from the school said Kelly's plan "could include Blount's potential reinstatement prior to the conclusion of the 2009 season.''
After the Ducks' 19-8 loss at Boise State, Blount punched an opposing player, a teammate and accosted fans at Bronco Stadium in an outburst caught on national television and replayed countless times. On the following day, Oregon issued a release announcing the suspension and adding "the suspension would remain in effect through any bowl games the Ducks may play in,'' and that "he will not be allowed to participate in any games.''
It also said that Blount would remain a part of the school's football program and would remain on scholarship through the year and would have access to university support services and would practice with the team.
Blount has practiced regularly with the team for the past three weeks, mostly on the scout team. He has attended all the games. On Thursday, a letter of apology signed by Blount appeared in the campus newspaper. Barred from speaking to the media since the incident, it was Blount's first public comment since his postgame apology at Boise.
Kelly has refused to answer further questions about Blount but has referred to a "plan'' that evidently outlined steps Blount could take to be reinstated.
A reinstatement would be a reversal of the stance taken by Kelly and athletic director Mike Bellotti at a news conference on Sept. 4 to announce the suspension along with a statement from university president Richard Lariviere supporting "the decision made by coach Chip Kelly.''
"LeGarrette Blount will still be on our team,'' Kelly said at the news conference. "LeGarrette Blount will just not play for us on Saturdays.''
Oregon's next game that does not fall on a Saturday is the Civil War on Dec. 3. Of the possible bowl games, only the Emerald Bowl falls on a Saturday (Dec. 26).
