I would recommend sharpening up your mixing skills before using one of them. If you do choose to use it, use it in moderation! When you mess with exciters, theres a fine line between enhancing your audio and destroying it.

when mixing a beat to sell do i want to get the levels as hot as possible or do i want to leave some room for the artists' engineer to adjust that?

If you are giving them the beat with all the sounds split onto separate tracks then get those as hot as possible without any clipping. If you're giving them a mixdown of the beat then just do your best to make it sound good and give them a small bit of head room. Maybe like -2db. That way they have a little room to fuck with it on their own and hopefully won't have to have you mix it down again.
