As a child, and then throughout his life, Speedy the Artist has found himself a man apart. His mother and he emigrated to the United States to seek a better life. Their story is not different from many others from Latin America, and the world, with the child not speaking a lick of English and having to make their way. What makes Speedy remarkable is that he has never let any sort of obstacle slow him down, and that he has brought himself to the point where it is almost indistinguishable that this lyricist was not raised in this tongue.

This determination was on full display when I first witnessed Speedy making a performance at Candidt’s well respected Seattle Hip-Hop showcase, the Corner. Speedy was performing as an opener for Tacoma’s J-Mar, when his microphone inexplicably shorted out. As Candidt and the DJ, Mr. Hill, were working to restore sound to the host Rendezvous, Speedy took it upon himself to not keep the antsy capacity crowd waiting any longer. Instead, he took it as a challenge to provide an indelible impression of the man that he is.
