Rent-a-Hero No. 1 is an action-adventure game, with a big emphasis on fighting and exploration. The concept is admittedly pretty bizarre -- you assume the role of a part-time superhero, who works for a mysterious company called SECA. Aside from creating the Rent-a-Hero armor, SECA also provides you with a "Creamcast" -- a set-top console that lets you receive e-mail, and find high-paying superhero jobs. Instead of using standard turn-based battles, fights are in the style of a 3D fighting game.

Originally released as Rent A Hero for the Sega Mega Drive in 1991, it was remade as Rent A Hero No.1 for the Dreamcast in 2000. It features similar events to Rent-A-Hero, this time adding Rent-A-Hiroko, a female counter-part of Taro. The fighting engine used for the game is the same used for Sega's Spikeout games and allows the player to receive hints via in-game email. The game was enhanced and given online capabilities by Coolnet Entertainment and AIA Games for the Xbox in 2003, and also translated into English for a North American release in what would have been the first Rent-A-Hero overseas release. However, the English version of the game was never released due to distribution problems, and the Xbox version remained only in Japan as it had previously happened with the original Dreamcast version.

Your character is a teenager who just moved into a new town. In this town your character will meet a crazy looking professor who will send you on your way in becoming a hero. Since you are a Hero for hire, many towns’ people will hire you for certain jobs. Some jobs will require you to stop a robbery, rescue people from a crazy robot, or even just find a lost little girl. Whatever the case you take on the role of a hero. This game contains many different scenarios that will make you laugh. Most of the time you will be talking to the towns’ people to get clues and solve cases. At times you will be required to fight bad guys. Other times you will be working part time making money. Some of the jobs you can be working are pizza delivery, grocery delivery, and even putting on a Hero Show. The catch for being a hero is that you have to pay a rental fee for your combat suit. Without money in your pocket, you can kiss your combat suit goodbye!
