Question regarding Pro Tools

Can this sequencer be used on a PC alone?
I downloaded version 5.3 to try it out since most cats use it.
I start to install it but then I get a message saying that no hardware was found.
Am I wrong thinking that this software can be used on my PC alone with out any Pro Tools hardware?

only the Pro Tools Free Version Works. Any other version won't work without the hardware. Plus you have to have the PC version.

That makes sense.
I guess there's different versions of the free version on top of that.
