Nothing really happens in Beyond the Black Rainbow, its more just an exercise in style. It barely has a story line and then randomly turns into a slasher film in like the last 10-15 min. Great to look at and so is Only God Forgives.

I thought this movie was motherfucking bad ass! I didn't care for drive all that much, either. Only reason I bring that up is because of some of the similarities in pace. My friend told me he thought Only God Forgives had no direction and he couldn't wait til the end credits.. I'm on the complete opposite side I thought the movie was the shit. See it again in a week or so.

im gonna need to see this again but i definitely liked it. Drive blew me away, and I know people think that movie was slow, or soft, but its storyline and character development was much more impactful than this one. the violence is great, the cinematography is great, the story of police corruption and "foreigners in a foreign place" is great, but all of that means nothing because...none of it means nothing. I dont need a nice, tidy plot line, and a hero and a villain, someone to like and hope for, and someone to hate, but i just ended up not giving a shit about anyone. Ryan Gosling's character is so flat, and a pussy, overall, that its intended "weirdness" and "transgression" towards his mom ends up meaning nothing. I ended up not caring about their relationship, because it never meant anything in the first place. This movie was beautiful, but not impactful. I could go on but i dont want to spoil anything.


overall, the whole "emptiness" or "lack of focus" on one character is clearly a stylistic approach, but it ends up hurting the movie more than helping it, IMO.

I feel you. I was a big fan of Drive and liked it better than this. But this was something else, it was off the wall. Being around a lot of Cambodian and Thai people most of my life, the "villain " karaoke scences were something I can definitely relate too haha. Same fucking songs. Visually it was amazing to watch, as stated the cinematography was top notch. Oddly it's a movie where you don't need a deep storyline or plot twits, it was just captivating.

I dig this sub genre of violent art house or whatever the fuck it's referred too. I haven't seen too many movies that can fit inti this category. I guess "Funny Games" is something similar, that was probably the first kind if "violent art house " I remember seeing, which I enjoyed.

Drive kinda struck me like it was a old school western flick. Not a ton of great dialogue, scenes that seem to have long periods without talking, a lot said without anything being said, a nameless hero, and violence. Westerns aren't for everyone but something in western movies resonates with a lot of men. I thought Drive was a great movie all the way around.

Man, I watched The Place Beyond the Pines. Crazy movie. Totally different than I really expected. One of the best scored movies I've ever seen too. Caught me off guard they had a Messy Marv track on there too
