Bears quarterback hurt in second quarter

August 12, 2005
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Chicago Bears quarterback Rex Grossman broke his left ankle early in the second quarter of Friday night's preseason game against the St. Louis Rams and will be sidelined three to four months.

Grossman, who played in only three games last season before being shelved by a right knee injury, was hurt with 11:08 to go in the half on a 4-yard completion to Darnell Sanders. After being flushed out of the pocket by Jeremy Loyd and Trev Faulk and getting spun around by Faulk, he got back to his feet.

While limping, Grossman signaled for a trainer. He then sat down and grabbed his left knee in pain, and slammed his helmet on the cart before being taken off the field.

The Bears used four quarterbacks last year and have used at least three in six of seven seasons. They could be stuck in a similar predicament this year given that backup Chad Hutchinson is unproven.

General manager Jerry Angelo said in the offseason that he was committed to having a veteran backup on board, but the team passed on Kurt Warner, Brad Johnson and Jay Fiedler.

Grossman was 6-for-11 for 52 yards before leaving the scoreless game. He was replaced by Hutchinson, who led the Bears to their only first-half score on the same drive.

I actually am hoping thst they will let Orton start. I was very pleased with Chicago's draft and Orton and Bradly could start the season. I would say Benson as well, but he needs to sign.

MOTHER FUCKER

This news ruined my friday night. Rex has so much potential, but he's never been able to start more than 3 consecutive games. Benson really needs to sign now. Or else this season is just gonna be like last year. QB Carrousel and no consistancy from the offense. All this team needs to do is not turn the ball over and eat up the clock and let the defense do all the work. I like Kyle Orton, but he's not the answer. Chad Hutchinson is a fucking joke too. Fuck Jerry Angelo for not signing a legit backup QB.

And now he signed Jeff Blake????? HAHA, might as well get Jeff George back too. What's Rodney Peete doing? Jeff Hostetler? Ryan Leaf? Any other washed up/semi-retired qb's want a shot?

Ah man I couldn’t believe it when I heard he broke his ankle! Fuck I had such high hopes for da bears this year. Now, Benson is still holding out…WTF?!? Nothing I hate more than ROOKIES who have NEVER played a game holding out for larger contracts! There should rules against that…rookies should get paid minimum, or close to it, cant negotiate until the first year is over.

Shit, da bears have a curse when it comes to QBs. I can’t think of ONE seriously good QB in the history of their franchise. Jim McMahon was the best they had, but he wasn’t even that good, just a mediocre QB on one of the best teams of all time.

Damn, if Hutchinson plays the entire season, good fucking luck. Orton is better than that. In fact, if Orton can just get the ball to Mohammad a few times a game and keep the interceptions/turnovers low, they can still be a pretty decent team; they should have a good running game with Jones and Benson (that is if he ever signs) and their D should be one of the best. We’ll see…
