Not just Canelo a ton of fighters. I know what Hershman is doing. He doesn't want to be forced mismatches like Canelo vs Lopez (which started the fued) ,Broner vs Paulie etc. In the long run Im sure Golden Boy will realize they cant have all if their fighters fight in Showtime with a limited budget and will eventually have to work with HBO again. But it hurts us fans now.

So Showtime is basically Golden Boy boxing now. HBO will be Top Rank, dibella, gary shaw, etc.

HBO Ends Golden Boy
Relationship, Passes on Broner

By Keith Idec

HBO has passed on broadcasting Adrien Broner’s next fight
and the premium-cable channel’s boxing boss indicated
Monday that the network won’t work with Golden Boy
Promotions, Broner’s promoter, for the foreseeable future.

The announcement marked the crumbling of a once-powerful
alliance between HBO Sports and Golden Boy Promotions, a
relationship that was weakened when Showtime hired former
Golden Boy attorney Stephen Espinoza to run its sports
division in November 2011. Showtime now televises Golden
Boy Promotions cards almost exclusively, but Broner and
Bernard Hopkins were the only high-profile Golden Boy fighters
whose fights were still broadcast by HBO.

Ken Hershman, president of HBO Sports, said in a statement:
“In order to achieve our goal of the best fighters, in the most
compelling matchups, we’ve decided to focus our efforts and
resources on those strategic relationships where we better
share common goals in business philosophy.”

In other words, HBO intends to work with promoters other than
Golden Boy Promotions moving forward, most notably Golden
Boy’s promotional nemesis, Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc.

HBO’s announcement comes less than a month after Floyd
Mayweather Jr., HBO’s flagship fighter, signed a six-fight, 30-month deal with Showtime. Mayweather works closely with
Golden Boy Promotions, although the company technically is
not the promoter of record for boxing’s pound-for-pound king.

Broner (26-0, 22 KOs) is expected to move up two weight
classes to challenge WBA welterweight champion Paulie
Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KOs) in his next bout, possibly June 22 in
Malignaggi’s native Brooklyn, N.Y. Malignaggi is employed by
Showtime as a color commentator, but HBO’s decision to pass
on the Broner-Malignaggi fight ultimately had more to do with
the network’s concern over eventually losing Broner to
Showtime no matter whom Broner fights next.

Once Espinoza took over Showtime I always thought why would any other promoter would want to deal with a former GBP rep? There is prob a shitload of illegal shit going on over there. Some people are complaining that now Arum will control HBO since they are no longer working with GBP but I think the opposite. HBO now has leverage on Arum cuz they know he isn't going to work with Espinoza at Showtime so there is nowhere else for him to go.

Just a matter of time before Espinoza is fired from Showtime and GBP tries to limp back to HBO, if they are still in business by then.

Hershman his philosophy has always been buying the best fights possible. Back when he was on Showtime he did more with less money, the super six tournament, 118 tournament and generally more competitive fights.

The irony is that Greenberg at HBO was fired basically because of his too close of a relationship with Golden Boy.

HBO also shows a lot of European fighters now too, which is great. Guys like Golovkin, who is promoted by K2, etc. So it wont be just Top Rank it will be dibella (sergio Martinez, etc), Goosen (andre ward) and other promoters all trying to compete for HBO money, meaning they'll have to make great fights. Golden Boy basically has a free pass to do anything they want at Showtime. Who the hell asked for Broner vs Paulie? That wasn't even on anyone's radar.

The problem though is GB has such a deep stable. Canelo, Hopkins, Khan, Peterson, Matthysse, Garcia, etc etc.

What I don't like about Showtime is that they will broadcast their W and E fights at 3 hour gaps. Plus ShoHD plays it at W (if you are on the West).

HBO plays the fight on W, E and HD ALL at the same time.
Showtime plays E, then you have to wait 3 hours to watch it in HD.

Plus I hate that chubby 4-eyed bowl cut Strikeforce twerp that commentates now.
Gray and Bernstein are cool, but that wannabe deep voice geekforce guy gets on my nerves.

Looks like broner really is the next Floyd.

Adrien Broner Arrested in
Miami, Police Confirm,
Mugshot

by David P. Greisman

Lightweight titleholder Adrien Broner was indeed arrested on
Monday in Miami Beach, according to a staffer who answered a
call to that city’s police department. Broner was charged with
battery, the police said.

This matches up with information on a booking photo from the
Miami-Dade Corrections & Rehabilitation Department website
that Broner posted on his Instagram account before apparently
removing it, showing his mugshot, a booking time of 10:13 a.m.
and a bond amount of $1,500.

The police staffer said she could not provide any further
information, including exactly where and when Broner was
arrested.

The Miami-Dade Corrections & Rehabilitation Department’s
“inmate in custody search” feature no longer showed Broner as
being in police custody.

“They tried to keep a nigga locked down in MIA,” Broner wrote
on Twitter at about 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time, linking to the
Instagram photo that is no longer online.

The 23-year-old fighter is coming off a February win over Gavin
Rees that brought his record to 26-0 with 22 knockouts. He is
expected to face welterweight titleholder Paulie Malignaggi in
his next bout, potentially in June.

Schaefer: Broner still has a long-term contract with Golden Boy
March 18th, 2013 | Post Comment

Showtime HBO Golden Boy Promotions Broner Malignaggi Broner vs. Malignaggi paulie malignaggi adrien broner By Allan Fox: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer reportedly isn’t pleased with the news that Curtis Jackson aka “50 Cent”, is interested in signing WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) to his SMS Promotions stable.

There had been previous talk about the 23-year-old Broner’s contract with Golden Boy expiring next month in April, but Scaefer is saying that’s not that case. He says Broner is still under a long-term contract with Golden Boy and Al Haymon, his adviser.

Schaefer said to Yahoo Sports News “Adrien has a long-term contract with Al Haymon, and a long-term contract with us…we have put 50 Cent on notice [that] any further involvement or any further poaching attempts by 50 Cent and he’ll end up in a lawsuit.”

The reason this is important is because Broner is still saying he’s “Mr. HBO,” and he prefers that network to Showtime for his fights. On Monday, HBO announced that they were cutting ties with Golden Boy Promotions, and were no longer going to purchase fights from them to televise on HBO. Broner has done well with HBO, and brought in huge ratings in his recent fights.

He’s clearly becoming more and more popular with each fight on HBO. But by now being stuck with only being able to fight on Showtime, which has a lower subscription rate than HBO, Broner will be seen by fewer boxing fans.

Schaefer doesn’t see this as a problem because he feels in time that with the addition of Golden Boy Promotions’ fighters, Showtime will eventually catch up to Showtime.

That’s possible in theory, but not likely. HBO is the better known company in the minds of a lot of fans, and when people subscribe to a premium channel, HBO is frequently their first choice rather than Showtime. I don’t believe that’s going to change with casual boxing fans. Not a lot of casual fans have both Showtime and HBO, so it means that Broner’s fights are likely going to be seen by fewer boxing fans for as long as his fights are shown on Showtime.

It may not matter if he’s still getting a lot of money, but if his goal is to be seen by as many boxing fans as possible, then he probably is better off with his fights being televised by HBO.

Broner: I’ll kick Malignaggi’s backside and then we can be friends
March 18th, 2013 | Post Comment

Broner Malignaggi Broner vs. Malignaggi paulie malignaggi adrien broner By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) says he and WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) can still be friends after he whips him on June 22nd on Showtime at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Broner told Dan Rafael “I’ll kick his a** and then we can be friends.”

As for Broner no longer fighting on HBO, Broner said “I’m still Mr. HBO and I always will be.”

Broner’s promoters at Golden Boy have been 86ed by HBO, and will no longer be able to have their fighters televised on the network. It seems kind of a complicated issue that goes a lot deeper than simply HBO losing Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to Showtime.

Apparently, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer has put a lot of pressure on HBO in the past for specific dates that his fighters, as well as specific match-ups that he wanted for them.

If Schaefer didn’t like he was hearing from HBO, he would mention that his fighters could end up leaving HBO for Showtime. We saw Golden Boy fighters Amir Khan and Canelo leave HBO last year, and then with Mayweather leaving HBO, it kind of was the tipping point.

Broner seems to really like HBO, but the only way he’s going to be able to still have his fights with the network is if he leaves Golden Boy next month when his contract expires and signs with another promoter like SMS Promotions headed by 50 Cent or possibly Top Rank.

The problem with Broner signing with Top Rank is he’ll be stuck fighting Manny Pacquiao at the end of his career, and then he’d be trapped in fights against Tim Bradley, Mike Alvarado and Brandon Rios.

The Bradley fight would be a big deal, but Rios and Alvarado aren’t big names, and it wouldn’t be as interesting. But what would be really bad is if Broner had to fight them over and over in rematches due to Top Rank not having enough fighters at that weight for Broner to compete against.

Golovkin wants Mayweather at 155
March 18th, 2013 | Post Comment

gennady golovkin floyd mayweather jr By Allan Fox: WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) says you can add his name to the list of fighters that wouldn’t mind facing unbeaten WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the near future if Mayweather were to be willing to meet him at 155 lbs.

Golovkin fights at 160 lbs, so he couldn’t come down to 147 lbs. to fight Mayweather because that would be too much weight for Golovkin to take off. However, he is willing to meet Mayweather halfway at 155 if he’s open to taking the fight.

Golovkin said to RingTV “Of course, that would be my dream to fight Mayweather.”

That would be a great fight if Mayweather were to accept a bout with Golovkin. Mayweather would have to be willing to fight Golovkin at a catchweight of 155 lbs if he wanted Golovkin’s World Boxing Association title to be on the line because 154 would make the fight a junior middleweight bout instead of middleweight.

Mayweather would have a good chance to outbox Golovkin if he could handle his big power shots, and hard jabs. Golovkin is a definite step up from Miguel Cotto in the power and skills department, so Mayweather would have to be prepared to be hit a lot harder than he did against Cotto.

Golovkin will be defending his title this month against 37-year-old Nobuhiro Ishida (24-8-2, 9 KO’s) on March 30th at the Salle des etoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco. This is a stay busy fight for Golovkin until one of the bigger names in the division gets an open schedule and agrees to fight him.

Golovkin hasn’t had a lot of takers for a fight with him, and it might require for him to look vulnerable against Ishida in order to get the top fighters Sergio Martinez, Daniel Geale, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Peter Quillin to fight him.

De La Hoya: Doesn’t HBO know Golden Boy is stacked with talent?
March 18th, 2013 | Post Comment

HBO Golden Boy Promotions oscar de la hoya By Allan Fox: Oscar De La Hoya was surprised with HBO’s move made earlier today to sever ties with Golden Boy Promotions fighters, and no longer televise their fights. De La Hoya, the president of the company a former star for HBO that made them millions of dollars during professional and promotional career, sees it as a self-defeating move by HBO due to Golden Boy having so many talented fighters in their stable.

De La Hoya said on his social media site: “Game on!! I am so pumped to bring all the great fights to @SHOsports and CBS. Good luck With your captain sailing you through the Dead Sea…I’m surprised @HBOboxing would make such a bold move. Don’t they know GBP is stacked with talent?”

What HBO seems to be forgetting is that Top Rank, which will be supplying most of their talent for their fights, is headed by an 81-year-old CEO in Bob Arum. He’s not going to be around for too much longer, and who knows how well the promotional company will do once Arum is gone. Golden Boy has younger executives in charge, and they’ve got the top fighters in Saul “Canelo”, Adrien Broner, Danny Garcia, Amir Khan, Lucas Matthysse, Austin Trout, Lamont Peterson, Bernard Hopkins and a close association with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

I don’t expect HBO to freeze Golden Boy out permanently because HBO president Ken Hershman may not be around forever, especially if this move ends up hurting HBO in their ratings. Believe me, if HBO’s ratings tank big time because of this someone is going to be the fall guy, and the people above Hershman may not be happy with seeing the results of this.

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer says he’s not surprised that this move was made by HBO because he hasn’t spoken with Hershman since last November, and he sees this as the fallout from HBO’s loss of Golden Boy fighters Canelo and Mayweather to Showtime.

On the phone with Andre Ward

John J. Raspanti: How’s the shoulder rehabilitation coming along?

Andre Ward: It’s going great. I’ve tried to keep the fans and the media abreast along the way. I didn’t want to disappear during this process. Ultimately, right now I’m ahead of schedule. The challenge for me is not getting too far ahead. Everything is feeling good. The shoulder is feeling stronger. I’m going to comeback stronger. I really mean that.

JJR: Do you have a target date for your return?

AW: To be honest with you, we do have a date we’re looking at, but it’s a little premature right now. I’ll tell you this, when I hit four months after the operation (in May) that’s when I can go all out. In the meantime, I’m doing my conditioning and rehab. We might even do an open workout around that time to show everyone where I’m at.

JJR: I know what a competitive person you are. How frustrating is it being sidelined when other fighters are calling you out?

AW: (laughing) Actually, I don’t think I’ve heard anyone call me out since Chad Dawson. I hear people mention my name during the course of an interview. That being said, yeah it’s frustrating. But, you know John, all of these things, the good and the bad, they make you who you are. I know how I’m feeling right now man. I’m fired up. I’m just biting at the bit. I’m just excited to be returning.

JJR: Do you get annoyed at the suggestion of some that you might be a little brittle?

AW: It’s always going to be something. You look at the postponement in my fight against Froch. There’s nothing I could about do that (Ward was cut during training - JJR). Things happen, but you know I have to be realistic about the time I’ve put into this sport. I’m not an iron man. I’ve been doing this for twenty years. To me it’s more about how you come back. I’ve had these tough fights the last few years. It takes it’s toll.

JJR: Young pro James DeGale and his promoter have mentioned fighting you. Can you get up for a fight against DeGale?

AW: I’ve never had trouble getting up for anybody. What blows me away is the opponent, and his team. They set times and dates of when they want fto ight me. That makes me laugh. I’ve never even seen DeGale fight. In a year or so, who knows, but at this point in my career I’m past just trying to make fights. I’m trying to make meaningful fights – fights that mean the most to my legacy. Also, fights that the fans and the networks want to see.

JJR: Would you like to fight undefeated middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin if he moves up to one hundred and sixty-eight pounds?

AW: Oh yes, if he moves up to one sixty-eight then he’s in my neighborhood. At some point, we’ll have to do something. You can’t live close to somebody for a long time without eventually speaking. He moves up to one sixty-eight and keeps winning, then absolutely that’s something that could happen and should happen.

JJR: In two years you’ll be thirty-one years old. Will you be fighting as a light heavyweight?

AW: How old did you say I was?

JJR: (laughing) I don’t mean now. I said in two years. I know you’re twenty-nine.

AW:(chuckling) Ok, just checking. It could be sooner than that two-year period. Personally, that’s something I’m looking forward to. I won’t have to struggle to make weight. It will be nice to just train and build my body up. Also, I want to be a multi-divisional champion. That’s something I’ve always wanted to do.

JJR: Your two rivals, Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler will be fighting for the second time in a few months. Whom do you see winning that fight?

AW: Stylistically it’s a fifty-fifty fight. I think Froch, though he’s been in some tough fights, has more left in the tank. He’s fought better competition since their first fight. He still seems to be going strong. Kessler has had some layoffs and injuries. I can’t see Kessler getting his hand raised, especially in England.

JJR: Kessler has made some disparaging comments recently regarding his fight with you. Why do you think he’s doing this?

AW: At the end of the day, I know that some of the things he and his team are saying are excuses. It’s unfortunate. I think it looks bad for him. His excuses have been mounting by the day. Kessler didn’t think that (Ward beating him) would happen. He didn’t have to come to Oakland. He’s the world champion. I had to fight the best fighter in the tournament at the time. The trade-off was that they had to come to Oakland. They had no problem with it. Then you hear the excuses. To be honest, I’ve lost respect for Kessler and Carl Froch because of the way their making excuses. You win some and lose some. I think you should be standup about it. Both of those guys have been ridiculous.

JJR: Would you go overseas to fight the winner?

AW: It’s a tough thing because I’m not really focused on either guy. The only reason we’re talking about these guys is because they make headlines. If they feel there’s been an injustice - then I’d be willing to give them a rematch. That’s kind of where I am. I’d also entertain a fight in the UK. I’m not running from that.

JJR: Give me your opinion about steroid use in boxing. Is it a major problem?

AW: I don’t know fundamentally the difference between an anabolic steroid and a testosterone. Seeing all the guys that have issues over the years – I didn’t know it was this big of a issue in the sport of boxing. In the last two or three years there’s been a lot of eyebrow raising that has taken place for one reason or another. I don’t want to say it’s becoming a epidemic in the sport of boxing, but it’s definitely a serious problem. With companies like VADA, USADA, and even the commissions – I hope that their more aware and have a desire to catch people that are cheating. I’m concerned with the guy who is gaining an advantage by doing something willfully. I don’t think I’ve been in the ring with anyone like that. When you see guys come out of fights that test positive it really upsets you because they can really do harm or damage an individual in the ring. At the same time, I think we’re actively dealing with it.

JJR: Thanks Andre, it’s always great to talk to you.

AW: Alright John, lets stay in contact.

JJR: You bet.

VIRGIL HUNTER TO TRAIN ANDRE BERTO?
By Ben Thompson | March 19, 2013

Sources close to the information have informed us that world-class trainer Virgil Hunter will likley be the new face in the corner of former wetlerweight champion Andre Berto, who recently parted ways with long-time trainer Tony Morgan after suffering the second loss of his career. Although Berto has been spotted getting some work in at a number of different gyms, we're told that recently, he's been spending the majority of his time working with Hunter.

Hunter, who is best known for his work with undefeated super middleweight king Andre Ward, has quickly increased his stable of fighters to include names like Amir Khan, Alfredo Angulo, Fernando Guerrero, and Karim Mayfield, to name a few. Though no official agreement has been announced, our sources say both Berto and Hunter have been working well together for the past few weeks and that trend will likely continue.

Lol @ broner biting a security guard

More Info on Adrien Broner’s
Alleged Forearm Bite

by David P. Greisman

Adrien Broner allegedly bit a security guard in the forearm as
the guard tried to break up a fight that was taking place outside
of the Fontainebleau Hotel, according to an arrest affidavit
obtained by BoxingScene.com from the Miami Beach Police
Department.

Officers were called to the hotel at about 3:39 a.m. on Monday
for a report of an altercation between hotel security and
multiple men. Upon arriving, police were told that Broner, a 24-year-old Cincinnati man named Michael M. Owensby and
“additional unknown males” had been fighting on the valet
ramp of the hotel.

A security guard had come up from behind Broner to try to pull
him away from the fight.

“While doing this, [Broner] bit the victim in the right forearm,”
wrote the police officer in his arrest affidavit. “I observed the
injury, which was visible on his forearm.”

Security guards told police that Broner had been detained after
a short struggle, which is how he remained until officers arrived
and took him into custody.

“I asked [Broner] what happened, and he stated that he did not
hit anyone,” the officer wrote.

Owensby, meanwhile, was also charged with one count of
battery. He is accused of pushing a security guard “in the chest
with both hands in an attempt to assist” Broner as the fight
was being broken up.

Broner was released on $1,500 bail, as was Owensby,
according to online court records. Broner posted about his
arrest on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook on Monday evening.

“They tried to keep a nigga locked down in MIA,” Broner wrote
on Twitter at about 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
