I like how Ortiz wins one fight and the world is back on his nuts.
they way he fought was impressive. If he keeps fighting with that same intensity, that same desire, I'll be a fan for as long as he fights.

But I agree with you a bit, it was his best performance since losing to maidana and he did fight mediocrely since then.

A fact is that Marquez didn't became a superstar until after joining Golden Boy. Marquez was on the back burner and missed out on big fights when he was with Top Rank. Again if Manny wanted to fight Marquez he would be fighting him on May 7th and not old ass Mosley. Manny could've said he wanted to fight Marquez just like he said he doesn't want to take the random testing.

Did you know that after the Marquez-Pacquiao first fight that ended in a draw, pacquiao offered an immediate rematch and a career high payday and Marquez turned it down and instead fought Chris John in Indonesia for $30,000 (and lost)?

Also, Pacquiao offered a third fight to Marquez after the Floyd negotiations fell apart the first time and Marquez tried to demand a 50/50 split (he would not budge even though Pac was the obvious attraction), so Pac fought Clottey instead.

Marquez has made some of his own career mistakes regardless if he was with top rank or golden boy. I love marquez, but sometimes he makes poor decisions.

So you're telling me that the great Manny didn't fight Marquez because of a money split? So you're telling me that if the money's not right for a big fight Manny doesn't have to fight, but Mayweather has to fight everyone no matter what or he's ducking them?

lol what? do you think floyd would have fought mosley for a 50/50 split? do you think oscar de la hoya would have fought ANYONE for a 50/50 split?

Jesus man, don't act some dumb. The big names in the sport get more money, the little ones don't. I mean Cotto & Mosley turned down a fight against Andre Berto because he demanded a 50/50 split. Does that mean they ducked him or does that mean berto was an idiot for asking for that much money when he's never even been a PPV draw or none of that? it was crazy for marquez to demand a 50/50 split that is the same as saying, "nope, I'll pass on the fight for now!" Unless your Floyd, you don't get a 50/50 split with pacquiao. Floyd & Pacquiao are boxing cashcows right now, they earned that right to make the majority of the cash.

Especially floyd. If Victor Ortiz wanted to fight Floyd and demanded 50/50 split, would I say Floyd is ducking him? lmao hell no.

Mayweather beat up Mosley in May of 2010, then all the Manny dickriders said that Mosley was old and shot that's why Mayweather beat him. Fastforward a year later and now Mosley is not shot or old anymore because he's fighting Manny. That's how Manny fans mind works just ass backwards.

You shouldn't lump everyone together. Mosley was coming off his biggest win against Margarito. Granted, he had a very long layoff but most everyone in boxing considers that a solid, if not great win for Floyd. Myself included.

I agree with KAH707KALI Mosley is old but he's not shot.

I also agree with you in that I think based on styles there is some danger for pacquiao and maybe even more so since Freddie Roach is telling pacquiao to go for the knock out.

If it were me training pac (lol) I would tell him to fight shane exactly as he did against Oscar. Get off a couple shots then GTFO out of dodge. At least for the first 4-5 rounds, as shane still has power. The old saying goes in boxing that power is the last thing to leave a fighter. Reflexes might be long gone and speed can diminish, but power remains. Look at Ray Mercer, George Foreman, Archie Moore, etc., all dudes that still carried their devastating power well into their 40's.

I'm picking Mosley's to win because of his style of fighting. Manny's going to be right in front of him all night to be hit. Mosley has real knock out power. Mosley knows how to grab and hold when he gets hurt. Mosley is a great body puncher. Mosley is not coming in at a catch weight. Plus Mosley has never lost a fight against anyone that stands in front of him trading punches. That's my reason why I think Mosley will win.

Is that a good enough reason for you KAH

i think manny's foot work will be the difference.... not hand speed or power..

And the fact that manny throws punches down the center, opposed to mosely's very wide hooks...

Anybody recall the last southpaw shane has boxed? that may present some problems early too..

Luis Collazo in 2007 and shane won pretty easy. Prior to that it was Winky Wright, who beat Mosley twice. Those are the only southpaws he's faced so you're right you bring up a good point he doesn't have much experience against southpaws and he went 1-2 against the ones he fought.

*Cotto & Oscar are both naturally left handed but they fight in the Orthodox stance.

Arum: Pacquiao-Mosley is the most entertaining fight for the fans

By Chris Williams: With all the other potential opponents out there for Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KO’s) to fight his promoter Bob Arum chose 39-year-old Shane Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KO’s) for May 7th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Whether this fight does turn out to be exciting or not, it’s going to be going against what we’ve seeing from Mosley in his last two fights. Mosley has looked anything but exciting in his last two fights. Indeed, he’s looked terrible.

Arum said this about the Pacquiao-Mosley fight: “My matchmaker said Shane would make the most entertaining fight for the fans. For pure recognition, Shane Mosley is the best fighter for marketability.”

That’s really sad because that’s what I think this fight is: just a marketable fight between a fighter in his prime with Pacquiao going against another fighter who left his prime behind in the rearview mirror 2000 yesterdays ago. It’s going to be a mismatch and it’s disappointing that Mosley was chosen because of his name recognition rather than how he’s fighting now. I think it’s bad for boxing for fights to be put together just because one fighter is well know but is no longer what he used to be.

Pacquiao is facing what appears to be a toothless old lion in Mosley, and it’s going to be bad to see Mosley beaten up by Pacquiao. I just hope Pacquiao goes easy on the old guy because I don’t want to see Mosley knocked out or hurt. He deserves better. It’s good that he’s getting this big payday against Pacquiao, because it’s like a gold retirement watch but it’s bad that he’s probably going to get slaughtered so badly in this fight.

This is a fight where Mosley needs an age handicap in my view. They need to give Mosley like four or five rounds right off the bat so that it’s even. Pacquiao could then battle hard to catch up to Mosley and try to even out and then beat him. I think that’s what boxing needs to come to if they’re going to have mismatches between younger fighters in their prime and older guys that are pretty much shot.

Mares wants a fight with Donaire

By Jason Kim: Unbeaten WBC Silver bantamweight champion Abner Mares (21-0-1, 12 Ko’s) wants a shot against WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (26-1, 18 KO’s). Mares’ bantamweight finals tournament fight with Joseph Agbeko went down the tubes yesterday after Agbeko collapsed after a flight due to back ailment. With Agbeko now out of the tournament final and no replacement opponents found, Mares is now free to look for his next fight. A bout against Donaire would seem to be the perfect solution.

In an interview at examiner.com, Mares said “I would like to fight Donaire. Now that Nonito has signed with Golden Boy, I think it will be a lot easier to make that fight.”

This would be a good fight for both of them. I can’t see Mares doing much in this bout other than getting knocked out but it would be a good experience for him to fight someone as good as Donaire. Mares struggled in his two fights in the bantamweight tournament, fighting to a 12 round draw with IBF bantamweight champion Yonnhy Perez in May 2010, and then winning a controversial 12 round split decision over Vic Darchiyan in his last fight in the bantamweight tournament last December. Mares throws a lot of punches but is easy to hit. It’s scary to think what Donaire would do to Mares with his big power and fast hands coupled with Mares’ nonexistent defense. This could be a quick knockout for Donaire.

Donaire stopped WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel in the 2nd round in February. Donaire made Montiel look bad in beating him. However, Donaire’s current situation is still up in the air right now due to his promotional problems between Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank. Donaire might not be available to fight anyone for a while until this issue is solved.

Juan Manuel Marquez to defend his lightweight titles in June or July, still wants Pac

By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (52-5-1, 38 KO’s) is reportedly thinking about defending his lightweight titles in June or July of this year, and then going after a possible third right with Manny Pacquiao in November. Marquez was thought to be stepping up in weight to take on IBF light welterweight champion Zab Judah but it looks like Marquez is going to stay at lightweight and defend his titles against one of the challengers at that weight.

There is really only two interesting fights for Marquez at lightweight right now. Marquez can fight Brandon Rios, the regular WBA champion or he can take on his number #1 challenger Robert Guerrero. Both of those options will be very tough fights for Marquez because Rios and Guerrero have a lot of power, are very young and throw a lot of punches. It would seem that Judah would be the easier fight for Marquez because Judah no longer throws a lot of punches and can be out-worked. If Marquez can win his next fight in June or July, he might be the next opponent for Pacquiao.

However, Marquez’s chances of fighting Pacquiao probably drop dramatically if Marquez decides to stay with Golden Boy Promotions. It’s doubtful he’ll get the fight with Pacquiao if he does decide to stay with Golden Boy. Marquez is well aware of that and will have to make a big decision when it comes to deciding to stick it out with them or move on. Marquez gave Pacquiao a lot of problems in the past in his two fights with Pacquiao, but since then Pacquiao has moved up in weight and put on a lot of muscle. It would be a much different fight now unless Marquez can get Pacquiao to fight him at a catchweight. I don’t see that happening because Pacquiao gets other fighters to come down in weight to fight him at catchweights and hasn’t thus far done the same for fighters below his weight. There’s always a chance that Pacquiao could do this but I doubt it.

Arum thinking of matching Cintron with Pacquiao and Cotto

By Chris Williams: After signing former IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron (32-3-1, 28 KO’s) to a contract with Top Rank, Bob Arum is now thinking about matching the 31-year-old Cintron with his two biggest stars in his Top Rank stable Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto.

Arum said this in an interview at examiner.com: “He [Cintron] may be a good opponent for Manny Pacquiao. Cintron says he can make 147…And an all Puerto Rican fight with Cotto. It’s a good Madison Square Garden fight.”

It seems like a bad idea because Cintron has looked horrible in defeats to Antonio Margarito in the past, and was incredibly lucky not to have been beaten by Sergio Martinez in 2009 when Cintron talked his way out of a knockout loss after being dropped by Martinez. In his last fight, Cintron fell out of the ring in a fight with Paul Williams and was injured and needed to be carried away on a stretcher. The Williams, Martinez and Margarito fights have left Cintron a less than popular fighter with many boxing fans. Arum might not realize that and could be thinking that a Cintron-Cotto or Cintron-Pacquiao would be a big fight. I don’t agree. Cintron isn’t well known with casual boxing fans and the hardcore boxing fans have mixed feelings about him. At any rate, Arum will have one shot to match Cintron against Cotto or Pacquiao because I see Cintron getting wiped out by either of them.

If Arum wants to match Cintron with Pacquiao or Cintron, Arum needs to let those fights marinate more by at least waiting until Cintron has redeemed himself in the eyes of boxing fans by taking on and beating some quality fighters without some mishap in the ring. We don’t want to see Cintron going down from a shot and then convincing the referee that it was from a headbutt instead of a punch. He also needs to stay in the ring and not go flying out of it and getting hurt. I’d like to see Cintron fight and beat some quality fighters without some kind of drama going on. If Arum throws Cintron in with Pacquiao or Cotto right now, he won’t likely get nearly as much PPV money as he would if Cintron were to pick up a half dozen good wins to build up his name. Arum needs to put Cintron in with Joshua Clottey, Alfredo Angulo for a rematch, Paul Williams rematch, Mike Jones and Margarito rematch. If Cintron can win all those fights, which I highly doubt, then I say put him in with Cotto or Pacquiao. My guess is Cintron would lose to most if not all of those fighters. There’s no point in Cintron fighting Cotto or Pacquiao if he can’t beat Margarito [he's lost twice by knockouts to him], Jones, Williams and proven that he can beat Angulo twice. I’d also like to see Cintron back in with Sergio Martinez but with a different referee working the fight.

Vic Darchinyan: “After this fight they’re going to talk about this weight division an

by Geoffrey Ciani (Interviewed by Jenna J & Geoffrey Ciani) - This week’s 121st edition of On the Ropes Boxing Radio (brought to you by CWH Promotions) featured an exclusive interview with former two division champion Vic Darchinyan (35-3-1, 27 KOs) who is scheduled to face Yonnhy Perez (20-1-1, 14 KOs) tonight at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California. Darchinyan spoke about his upcoming fight, reflected back on some key moments from his career, expressed his desire for a rematch with Nonito Donaire, and gave his views on matters pertaining to the current boxing landscape. Here are some excerpts from that interview:

How he feels about his upcoming matchup against Yonnhy Perez:

“It was very good preparation in Australia. I feel very, very strong. Mentally and physically is both very important for a boxer, because you to train your body you have mentally prepared and I feel very comfortable and very good.”

Regarding his attitude going into his fight with Yonnhy Perez:

“I lost my fight with Abner Mares. I tried to show all the world my skills because they are always talking about my power. They know I’m very powerful. They are never talking about my skills. I tried to show all the world how skillful I am. I feel I showed that. I believe I won the fight but the judges gave Abner Mares the decision. I lost by one point. In this fight I’m going to mentally and physically very ready and I’m going to show the world how powerful I am.”

His overall views on Yonnhy Perez as a boxer:

“He’s a busy fighter. I think he’s a good fighter. He’s a busy fighter. He’s not a power puncher. He doesn’t have one punch, but he’s busy. His work rate is very high. So I’m going to go against him and I’m going to show more power and my work rate is going to be higher than his.”

On what he think this fight means to both men since they are both coming off of a loss:

“He lost to Agbeko. Agbeko beat him. I don’t think I lost my fight. My fight was a bad judgment. I am talking about Abner Mares. He punched me twenty times with low blows. The judges have to look out and they have to stop and either disqualify him or going to take points. The kid tried to his best. He wanted to push me, he wanted to punch me, and he wanted to throw low blows. He wanted to survive! That’s what he did! If Mares didn’t punch me with low blows I would have knocked him out! That’s why in this fight I’m going to crack Yonnhy Perez and I’m going to show how powerful I am. After this fight they’re going to talk about this weight division and they will know that I am the best in this weight division.”

Regarding what he could have done differently in his fight against Abner Mares to have more success:

“If I meet him again in a rematch I will knock him out in three rounds. I promise I will knock him out and everyone will see how good I am in front of him. It was just my tactic to show everyone how skillful I am. That is why I let him do all those dirty tactics with me and punch me with low blows all over twelve rounds. Coming back he never takes points and he hits me low again. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t hold my breath and the referee was warning me! The referee was telling me if you keep putting your hands up I’m going to take and deduct a point. What does that mean? I take my hands down and let him punch me? Bad judgment? I don’t know or if the referee was his cousin or something. It’s terrible in boxing when something happens like this. Next fight I’m not going to leave any judgment for judges or any referee I’m going to my business on my own in the ring.”

His views on the fact he seemed to abandon his jab against King Kong Agbeko after utilizing his jab well in his previous three fights:

“If you remember in the Agbeko fight yes, I did not use my jab. I just wanted to land a big left. I know I made a mistake in this fight. I want to fight Agbeko again because I made a mistake.“

On what he learned about Yonnhy Perez from watching his two fights against King Kong Agbeko:

“You know what’s happening is my boxing style is different. Every time I’m looking and I’m like judging something. Every time I’m watching my opponent I’m thinking he’s not quick enough, I’m going to knock him out. Then comes the fight and I fought the wrong fight. It happened with me with Agbeko. I had seen Agbeko fight before and in my mind I know I’m going to come knock him out, and if you remember I came out and started throwing big lefts and I was missing all the time with my left. If any one of those had connected I would have knocked him out. I couldn’t connect because I shortened my punches. I’m very good when I don’t know too much about my opponent. I like to know them in the round. After a few rounds I start doing what I love to do and I’m coming on top of it. If I am watching too many tapes I’m doing more mistakes. I love when I’m judging them myself in the ring. A couple of rounds is enough for me so I can tell what they can do.”

Regarding his knockout loss against Nonito Donaire and how he believes he has changed as a fighter since then:

“Nonito Donaire was in the top ten at the time. I gave him the opportunity to fight me for a world title. I trained good but I didn’t take him too seriously and I lost the fight. What happened? Yeah he was connecting with his left hook, but after a few rounds I was coming at him with big lefts. If I connected he would have gotten knocked out. He gets me before and I jumped at him. I jumped with all my weight with a big jump which is a big mistake in boxing. After that fight I moved up and I become undisputed world champion. I had three belts. I offered him.

I said, ‘Listen Nonito, if you think you’re stronger than me, come! You just moved up to 115 too. If you think you’re stronger than me come fight me and take my three belts. You will become undisputed world champion in one go. You won’t have to fight three champions and wait for them. Come fight me and go!’

His answer was, ‘No! I beat you already! Why do I need to box you again?’

‘If you beat me and you know you’re better than me then come take my three belts in one go.’

It’s already maybe four years. I’m challenging him. I’m doing everything. I’m saying things about him and putting him down and taking cheap shots and all that stuff. I want to show all the world I made a big mistake. It was four years almost. At the time I was young at 31. Now I’m 35. Come fight me! If you think you’re better than me then come take my titles. The guy is just using my name all these four years. Every time stories come up about him they say he beat Vic Darchinyan. Okay! I made a big mistake it was all in the past. Everybody makes mistakes. You want to prove you’re better than me? Fight me again and beat me again! That’s why I don’t want to mention any more his name. He used too much my name. Every time I challenge him he mentions my name and that he beat me. Who was he before? No one! And he’s going to finish as no one. He fought me. Who’s Fernando Montiel? I’ve been challenging him for years but he won’t fight me. He never took my challenge. Donaire got important only through my name. If he wants to fight me, yes! If not, I don’t want to hear any more about his name”

His views on Nonito Donaire’s rise to pound-for-pound greatness and what he has accomplished:

“He’s done nothing! What’s he done? Before Fernando Montiel he was fighting older and smaller guys. They were guys from 106-112 or something. He was fighting all of these smaller guys. He fought Fernando Montiel? Yes! He rushed him because he felt he could knock him out and take him out as quick as he could. If Fernando Montiel fought me I would knock him out too. He’s good, he’s strong, and he’s on the pound-for-pound list. Let’s fight me and see how strong you are. I’m now 35. I’m not young. Physically I can tell you I’m very strong and I am ready for any fight.”

Regarding who he would most like to rematch: King Kong Agbeko, Nonito Donaire, or Abner Mares:

“I think Donaire is better for me. If I fight Donaire and everything comes back. My confidence and everything is there. I’m still very confident about any opponent. I just want to knock him out. Like I said years ago, Nonito when I fight you I made you and I’ll break you! That’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to destroy him and then nobody will even remember him.”

His views on being an underdog in his impressive victory against Cristian Mijares:

“I even told everyone at the press conference before the fight I was going to knock him out. I was not surprised. I just loved that people were putting me as an underdog. As an underdog they think someone is better than me. I have to prove something to my opponent too. I’m much better than him. Now that’s why all of these four years I want to prove all the world with Nonito Donaire. I was how he became popular and everyone will know how easily I would handle him after. Yeah, against Mijares I was a big time underdog and like you said I came and destroyed him. But he was smart. He was trying his best. I told him before the fight I was going to be faster than him. I was going to throw more punches than him. Everything that I said at the press conference, that’s what I did.”

Regarding his favorite boxers who he most enjoys watching fight:

“Right now I love Pacquiao. I love watching his speed against bigger guys right now at the moment. Also my favorite boxer of all time was Mike Tyson. I liked his power and speed and how he combined them together using speed and power at the same time. When I was a kid like 8 or 10 years old I wanted to be a guy like Tyson who showed my power. That’s it! He’s my best fighter in the world when I started boxing.”

His views on whether Shane Mosley is too old to compete against Manny Pacquiao:

“I wouldn’t say old. Old is coming when you can’t do it with your body, when your body doesn’t want to train. I’m not too young too. I’m 35 years old but I can go to the gum and train for four or five hours and I feel I want to train. If you feel in your mind you’re already old it’s better you just retire. I think Shane Mosley still has speed. This is going to be very difficult for Pacquiao. I think Pacquiao will come over and show that he’s more aggressive because in every fight he is showing that he wants to destroy his opponent. He’s aggressive, he’s going inside, and he does his job. I like Pacquiao’s style and aggressiveness! I can tell you that Manny Pacquiao is much better now. Pacquiao before was using only his left. He wanted to land the left. Now he’s using his right and using his jab and hooks and that’s why he can take control of his opponents. I still think it’s going to be a good fight. Shane Mosley is 39-40. People think he is old but he is going to give a very good fight to Pacquiao.”

Regarding how much longer he intends to box professionally:

“Anyone who comes in the ring and shows me he’s more powerful than me, I’m going to go out the next day and retire.”

His final prediction for his fight against Yonnhy Perez:

“My official prediction is I’m going to look for a knockout from the first round and a knockout will come! You will see how good I’m going to be in the ring. After this fight everyone will talk about my power and about me.”
