According to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, 49ers WR/KR Ted Ginn "has been good for about a drop a day" in camp.
The SF Chronicle had called Ginn "impressive," but the Press Democrat's Phil Barber mentions Ginn among his 49ers "players on the decline." Ginn was not prone to drops at Ohio State or during his first two NFL seasons, so his problem appears to be mental. He'll struggle for a big offensive role.

49ers signed WR Kevin Jurovich.
Jurovich was a standout at San Jose State, but he couldn't make the Eagles roster. The undersized wideout also saw time at safety in college, though his versatility won't be enough to land him on the 49ers' final roster.

49ers rookie RT Anthony Davis described himself as being in "the best shape I've ever been in."
The mammoth right tackle has replaced fried foods and red meat with fish and chicken. Davis doesn't turn 21 until October, so we're waiting to see how alcohol will affect his diet. All jokes aside, the SF Chronicle sees Davis as the opening day starter as long as he continues to make the right decisions. We still see Adam Snyder opening with the first team, but Davis will be on his heels.

49ers OLB Ahmad Brooks will miss at least two weeks with a lacerated kidney.
It sounds like a serious injury, and Brooks is no lock to return before the end of the month. The two-week timetable is for his re-evaluation. Brooks was slated for a nickel pass-rushing role behind Manny Lawson at left outside linebacker.

49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye said jokingly that there are times he wants to "strangle" rookie RB Anthony Dixon.
"He's young, and you know how they say youth is wasted on the young," said Raye. "He's running over the quarterback and the lines." The 49ers are intrigued with Dixon's size and skills, but he's been struggling with fundamentals and consistency early in camp. "We anticipate he will give us an inside, physically dominant presence in the later part of the season," said Raye.

"Nobody in San Francisco" considers QB Nate Davis a great prospect, according to SI's Peter King.
In other words, he's not going to be considered a potential solution if Alex Smith flames out this year. At this point, the 49ers just have to be hoping that he progresses enough to be the long-term backup.

damn seems like Mike has them working in a concentration camp

So now with Baas out, Lupati will start. Hope this isn't a bad thing putting him in early... but better in preseason anyway

yeah and i was listening to damon bruce the other day and he was saying that if by like, week 4 the niners are tanking and smith is not performing to just release smith and play nate davis for the rest of the season. all because of a couple preseason games.

apparently his dyslexia has kept him from learning plays at the nfl level, and he apparently air mails all of his passes at least a foot over the receivers heads

Davis, Iupati Named 49ers Starters

Matt Maiocco
CSNBayArea.com

SANTA CLARA -- Well, that did not take long.

The 49ers selected two offensive linemen with the first 17 picks of the draft. Coach Mike Singletary said at the opening of training camp that right tackle Anthony Davis and left guard Mike Iupati would have to earn their ways into the starting lineup.

That time has already arrived. The 49ers open their exhibition season Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts.

"We feel like we've seen enough," Singletary said Monday.

Singletary consulted with offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye and offensive line coach Mike Solari. It was unanimous. Davis takes over at right tackle for Adam Snyder, while Iupati officially supplants David Baas, who is now seeing extensive work at center.

Coincidentally, Baas saw a lot of action during practice Monday morning after incumbent center Eric Heitmann hobbled off with a left leg injury. He remained standing for most of the time he was on the sideline, but he was taken to the locker room in a cart. Heitmann is out indefinitely, as his injury is evaluated.

The 49ers also worked during most of practice with backup left tackle Barry Sims in place of Joe Staley, who experienced neck spasms. Staley is not expected to miss a significant amount of time.

Davis' arrival in the starting lineup comes faster than most expected. Davis said he views his promotion as a positive thing, but he has plenty of room to grow and improve.

"It is a confidence boost, but you have to put everything in perspective," Davis said. "My main goal is I want to be the best player I can possibly be. So every day I come out here with the mindset to get better."

Davis admits it has been a difficult transition, which has been complicated by the fact he is coming from a zone blocking scheme in college. But Davis has impressed Singletary on multiple levels, the coach said.

"There's a toughness there," Singletary said. "He has the tools and he continues to work his tail off in practice. So there's a willingness there. He wants it. It's something he really wants to be good at it. And to be fair to him, give him every opportunity to do so."

Davis had been worked in with the first-team offense gradually. Iupati took over Aug. 2 when Baas sustained a concussion. He missed eight practices, and when he returned Iupati remained as the starter.

"It's kind of like a two-part thing," Singletary said. "First of all, they showed they have the ability to step in and be able to do it. The second thing is, if that's the case, then we have to give them the reps they need to be able to adjust and be ready."

With Heitmann out indefinitely, Baas, Tony Wragge and Cody Wallace will get extended action. Baas played nine games at center his senior season at Michigan. He saw limited action his second season with the 49ers, but he has worked primarily at guard in his career.

"It's definitely something I have to continue working on every day," Baas said. "The first thing that has to happen is the guys have to believe in me, and I have to show my confidence that I know the system. The other stuff, the detailed stuff, footwork and hands and all that stuff, just got to start clicking. But it will."

Baas handled his demotion from the starting lineup with aplomb. He said there is no time to feel sorry for himself after starting all 16 games at left guard last season.

"I want to win just like everybody else," he said. "I'm out here competing. They wanted me to compete at center, and that's what I'm going to do. I can't sit here and complain about it. You have to move on and be the best football player at whatever position you can. So that's what I'm doing."

After all, Baas said center might be the position that best suits him for the remainder of his career.

lol coach sing aint no punk!!

Mike Singletary just might have saved Vernon Davis.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Always wanted to ask one of the best young tight ends in the game how he felt about being shown up/embarrassed/clapped in the face by his new coach, Mike Singletary, a coupe of years ago. You remember Singletary banishing Vernon Davis from the sidelines during a game after a thoughtless Davis penalty, ordering him to the locker room and not to return.

"Best thing that ever happened to me in my life,'' Davis told me. "Woke me up. I was all about Vernon, not about the team.''

Davis also revealed Singletary told him if he wanted to fight, that was fine with him. They'd fight. "He pushed me to the edge,'' said Davis. "I needed that. When you're a first-round pick, and everyone's telling you how great you are, sometimes you need a guy to tell you that football's a team game. Here he is, one of the greatest players ever. So I had to change. Now, I'm all in.''

Davis caught 103 balls in his first three seasons, including that troubled third year, with nine touchdowns. Last year, he caught 78 passes with 13 touchdowns, most in the league for a tight end. When I asked Singletary about Davis, he smiled. "One of the most misconstrued guys in the league,'' Singletary said. "He raises the level in practice every day. He raises the work ethic. He's done everything I've asked.''

I've always thought this about the relationship between players and coaches: Most often, a player's going to respect a man who's been in the same arena more than one who hasn't. I don't think Mike Nolan, Davis' first coach, could have challenged him in any way approximating the way Singletary did. Singletary isn't the schemer of a Belichick or a Nolan, and who knows? Maybe he's lost out on jobs because the interviewers wondered if he could match wits with the smart guys in the game. But this story of challenging Davis and getting the best out of him illustrate that a coach who delegates can be just as strong as a coach who tries to do it all.

Leroy Vann just got cut. WTF? Why didnt they give him a shot to show what he got against the colts. I had high hopes for this kid man fuckin stupid!

http://blogs.sacbee.com/49ers/archives/2010/08/niners-cut-ties.html
I don't really understand this move considering their need for a PR/KR so bad. He had some college records for returns if I'm right...maybe it was his hands that got him cut. I would've liked to see him because he was so quick and elusive.

Linebacker hired to learn in a hurry
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/08/11/SPTB1ES3A4.DTL

Bruce Davis Jr. never did play offensive tackle like his father, Bruce Davis Sr., but he sure knows how to beat one from the outside linebacker position, thanks to years of father-son football talks.

"It's good because I know all their tricks, or most of them at least," said Davis Jr., a Monday signee who practiced with the 49ers for the first time Tuesday. "He would always teach me, 'Hey, they don't like this. This makes it easy for 'em. Do that, don't do this.' "

The 49ers need those handed-down family recipes to work. Ahmad Brooks, who splits first-team snaps with Parys Haralson, has a lacerated kidney and is out at least two weeks.

One backup, Travis LaBoy, has been out since Thursday with a concussion. Another backup, Martail Burnett, was placed on the waived/injured list with a knee problem Tuesday.

With no timetable for Brooks' return, the 49ers need someone who can learn their 3-4 system in a hurry. They think Davis Jr. could be that guy.

As a rookie in 2008, he won a Super Bowl with the Steelers while learning arguably the most complex 3-4 scheme in football. He spent last season with the Patriots, learning the nuances of Bill Belichick's 3-4. The offseason was spent in Denver and its own 3-4.

"I've been in so many 3-4 defenses at this point, it's not really complicated anymore," Davis Jr. said. "It's just learning what to call it. I've learned a defense in a week before."

Davis Sr. just hopes his son gets a chance to match his own 11-year playing career, including nine seasons and one Super Bowl ring with the Raiders.

He talks proudly of his son getting the best of Falcons tackle Sam Baker in college and at the Senior Bowl. He hopes his son can get a prolonged chance to show he can do it in the NFL.

"He's seen what it takes to win championships playing for the two toughest defenses to learn in the NFL," Davis Sr. said in a phone interview. "It's been difficult, but I think he's better for it. If he can get in the right situation, he'll more than show what he's capable of doing."

More Davis: So how does a big offensive lineman produce a chiseled linebacker?

"You marry a woman who ran track," Davis Sr. joked. That explains why Davis Jr. said he got his mom's speed.

Tough transition: Guard-turned-new-center Davis Baas put one snap on the ground and two shotgun snaps high, one day after starter Eric Heitmann broke his left leg. Offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye admits it won't be easy.

"It wouldn't be so bad if we didn't have to infuse the two youngsters in there because they are struggling, as rookies will, with learning the calls and the fronts," said Raye, referring to rookie starters Mike Iupati at left guard and Anthony Davis at right tackle. "And now, it's coming from a different source and it may not be correct or it has to be changed."

Still gone: Defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer was given Tuesday off by coach Mike Singletary to deal with personal issues. He also missed practice Monday afternoon. The 2008 first-round draft pick is expected back today, according to profootballtalk.com.

Report: 49ers QB Smith having ‘so-so’ camp
http://blogs.nfl.com/2010/08/10/report-49ers-qb-smith-having-so-so-camp/

This is obviously not on the level of ‘Favre Watch,’ but one of the other rites of training camp is the popular refrain, “This is the year Alex Smith puts it all together.”

We’re on the sixth year of the “Alex Smith Experience,” but this is going to be the year that he puts it all together. And yeah, we at NFL.com have been a little guilty of this, too, believing that Smith is going to thrive under second-year offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye.

A quick search of our blogs shows that there have been more words written on Smith during this offseason than he has career passing yards.

So there has to be some disappointment when Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com reports that Smith is having just a “so-so” training camp. But Maiocco is quick to point out that we are just a week into camp, and there is no reason to panic.

“I don’t think Smith’s accuracy is where it needs to be on the short throws,” Maiocco wrote. “On the other hand, his deep passes have been pretty good. Right now, I’d say he has been a lot more impressive than he’s ever been from whistle to snap. That is, he’s doing all the things you’d want your quarterback to do in the huddle, pre-snap, etc.

“But he has not been particularly sharp with the ball in his hand. But, again, it’s early. I’ll stand by the numerous statements I’ve made that I’d expect him to improve, production-wise, this season over the 10 1/2 games he played last season.”

Fool me once, shame on you. But fool me five times?

I was hoping for more encouraging news heading into the first preseason game. However, the luxury of holding your fantasy draft in September is that you can wait until most of the questions have been answered.

So call me guardedly optimistic right now. I still like Michael Crabtree as a potential Top 15 guy, but would not touch Smith at this point.

Kentwan Balmer officially A.W.O.L

Former first round draft pick Kentwan Balmer is currently absent from his fourth straight practice, and this time it's not excused. The 49ers have informed Balmer of that, and according to a team spokesman, "We are following standard procedure for a player who has left camp." Translation: Balmer is being fined for his absence. The 49ers have not been in contact with Balmer today and don't know where he is.

Coach Mike Singletary spoke to Balmer on Monday after Balmer missed the afternoon practice that day. Singletary said later that Balmer was dealing with "personal issues" and that he would give the defensive end time to deal with them. "Kentwan's got to make up his mind in terms of how he's going to handle it," Singletary said. "... Sometimes things come up in life and you have to decide which is more important. That's where Kentwan is right now and until he makes that decision I'm going to give him the time to handle it. Because there's certainly a lot that's on his plate right now." Singletary refused to divulge what those "personal issues" are, but they are not believed to be related to the current NCAA investigation at the University of North Carolina that involve Balmer.

Singletary gave Balmer all of Tuesday to make that decision, but informed Balmer that he was expected back on Wednesday. Balmer has underachieved since the 49ers took him with the 29th overall pick in 2008, and he landed on IR with a shoulder injury late last season. He is currently behind starters Justin Smith and Isaac Sopoaga as well as backups Ray McDonald and Demetric Evans at the position. At this point, Balmer's spot on the team appears to be in serious jeopardy.
