Greg Manusky is looking for mirror images.

The 49ers' defensive coordinator said Wednesday that at positions such as safety and linebacker, the ideal scenario is to feature players who are so similar in ability that opposing offenses never quite know what role each player has on a given snap.

"The best thing in this league nowadays is disguise, because the quarterbacks are so well-versed in the coverages, especially during the film sessions," Manusky said.

In San Francisco, for example, there are no "strong" and "free" safeties. Both safeties are expected to be able to help out with deep coverage as well as run support, and their roles can change from one play to the next.

That's why 49ers coaches are intent on improving second-round draft pick Taylor Mays' coverage skills this offseason.

They know that at 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, Mays has the bulk and athleticism to play close to the line of scrimmage. But they also want him to be able to cover wide receivers downfield. The 49ers hope that Mays and Dashon Goldson will be their safeties for the future. They believe the duo will be most effective if both players are multidimensional.

Manusky also joked that he'd like "two Patrick Willises" at inside linebacker.

The 49ers, however, did draft a player, Navorro Bowman, who is nearly identical to Willis in size and appears to be just as fast. Bowman mostly played outside linebacker in Penn State's 4-3 defense and is going through a crash course at inside linebacker in the 49ers' 3-4 scheme.

Bowman said he's usually at the team facility for six or seven hours. Then it's a quick nap in his hotel room before another three hours studying the defensive playbook.

"It's going to take that kind of discipline to get on the field as fast as I want to," Bowman said. "And that's my goal – to get on the field."

Et cetera – Quarterback Alex Smith's top three receivers in Wednesday's organized team activity were Ted Ginn Jr., Dominique Zeigler and rookie Kyle Williams. That's because most of the other receivers – Michael Crabtree, Josh Morgan, Jason Hill and Brandon Jones – had been tapped for random drug testing in the morning and missed most of the practice.

Tight ends Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker also were tested. Joe Jon Finley, Tony Curtis and rookie Nate Byham filled in at the position.

• One of the best offseason battles is at punt returner, where Ginn, Williams, Jones and rookie LeRoy Vann will compete. On Wednesday, all four struggled to catch the ball in a swirling wind. Said Williams, a former center fielder: "In baseball, (the ball) doesn't really jump around like that."

• The 49ers are giving David Baas and Tony Wragge work at center during practice. With rookie Mike Iupati expected to start at left guard, being versatile is the best way for Baas and Wragge – who have primarily been guards – to hold on to roster spots.

Free agent CB Walt Harris (ACL surgery) is reportedly drawing interest from "half a dozen teams."
The 49ers are not believed to be one of the teams. Harris indicated that he's fully recovered from his ACL injury, but he turns 36 in August. He won't land a guaranteed contract this summer.

Updating a previous item, 49ers CB Shawntae Spencer is not skipping OTAs due to unhappiness with his contract situation.
In the second year of a five-year extension, Spencer will make $2.85 million this season. He's been a no-show at voluntary OTAs only because he's opted to train instead in his hometown Pittsburgh.

49ers CB Will James is not practicing with the team because he doesn't know the defensive playbook yet.
James' mediocre talent is a bigger concern than his ability to learn the plays. He'll be competing with Karl Paymah, who ran with the first-team at minicamp while starters Shawntae Spencer and Nate Clements skipped out.

Patrick Willis (right knee) said he is still not sure when he'll be back on the field at full speed.
Willis had a procedure in March to remove an inflamed fluid sac from his right knee. It's a minor operation and we fully expect him to be at 100 percent for training camp at the very latest.

Glen Coffee, who played last season between 205 and 210 pounds, plans to bulk up to 225 pounds this season.
We're not sure exactly why Coffee is doing this after he lacked quickness as a rookie. The Niners drafted 240-pound bruiser Anthony Dixon in April, and Coffee isn't going to out-power the rookie. Frank Gore won't be given many plays off once again this season.

Maiocco: Mays Attracts Attention
http://www.csnbayarea.com/05/25/10/...-Attention/landing&blockID=240939&feedID=5936

The 49ers selected Mays with the No. 49 overall pick. And 49ers coach Mike Singletary seemed encouraged by everything he saw last week during OTAs. (The 49ers don't return to practice until June 7, but many of the players are staying around to train and study.)

"Taylor Mays is a kid that we are really excited to get our hands on," Singletary said. "Yes, you look at him and he's a guy that we are really working with him on fundamental things and the way we play safety.

"Our guys are interchangeable and we had a hunch that he would be able to do some of the things, whether it's in the box or playing man-to-man, whatever it might be. We're working on those things and he's doing well. So the ability that he has with being able to put the technique with it is going to be exciting."

Mays worked with the third team last week, and he did not see a whole lot of action come his way. But when I observed him, he did look smooth in his backpedal and demonstrates tremendous closing speed.

In college, Mays often went for the big hit. At the NFL level, the 49ers will want him to find the ball in the air and make a play. And instead of trying to deliver the bone-jarring collision every time, they'll want him to wrap up and make sure of the tackle.

The 49ers do not have to rush Mays onto the field. Well-respected veteran Michael Lewis has been among the team's leading tacklers every season he's been with the club. The safeties must know the defense and be able to communicate adjustments quickly.

Lewis and Dashon Goldson return as the starters. First, Mays must prove he can do the job better than Reggie Smith and Curtis Taylor, safeties the 49ers drafted the previous two years. Then, the 49ers can consider moving him further up the depth chart. The 49ers believe Mays has the versatility to play deep center field as well as providing run support in the box. He must be able to execute both effectively.

If he proves he knows the defense and has a feel for the game, it'll be difficult to keep him off the field. At this point, he does not know the system like the other safeties on the roster. But Mays' unique physical ability ensures he'll always be noticed.

49ers OG David Baas has begun taking snaps at center this week.
With Mike Iupati breathing down his neck at left guard, the Niners are getting the veteran Baas prepared for a versatile interior backup role.
WHEN I SAID SOMETHING ABOUT BAAS PLAYING CENTER PEOPLE WERE SAYING NO WAY HEITMANN WAS OUR MAN BUT THE THING IS COMPETITION BREEDS EXCELLENCE AND HOPEFULLY WE WILL GET THE BEST PLAYERS ON THE FIELD GO NINERS

I mean like Bass, I remember when we drafted him and I saw his mug and I was like yea that dude is gonna fuck some people up, but I dont think you can really put him in the same category as Heitman, cuz Heitman is a proven starter at Center in the NFL, Bass is still tryna find his place on the roster.
If anything to me that reads that Iupati is gonna blow past Bass for the Guard spot and Bass is gonna work off the bench, it would be nice to have some good players on our O-line on the bench, Barry Simms for Staley last year did not work out. Depth is important

From what everyone is saying it looks like Boone might be the swing tackle since he's lost that weight and dedicated himself to learning technique. Baas needs to step up and prove he can be versatile at this point and if he works out at C down the road that would be great. If anything, having depth at O-line would be great considering we've been really hurt when a key starter goes down....speaking of injuries Sims actually did a decent job when Staley went down.

News Analysis: 49ers Roster Breakdown
http://www.csnbayarea.com/06/01/10/...Breakdown-/landing&blockID=245108&feedID=5936
Three months before the 49ers must whittle their roster down to 53 players for the start of the regular season, we take a look at how things stand at this moment.

The 49ers currently own the rights to 82 players, seven of whom (franchise player Aubrayo Franklin and six draft picks) are not yet signed for the upcoming season. Teams are allowed to have a maximum of 80 players at the start of training camp.

Let's divide the 82 players into three categories, and try to gauge where each stands at this time. This is not a roster projection for Sept. 4, the deadline for teams to get to 53 players. But think of this as an up-to-date status repo

LOCKS (30)
QBs: Alex Smith, David Carr
RBs: Frank Gore, Glen Coffee
WRs: Michael Crabtree, Josh Morgan
TEs: Vernon Davis, Delanie Walker
OL: Joe Staley, Anthony Davis, Mike Iupati, Chilo Rachal, Eric Heitmann, David Baas, Adam Snyder.
DL: Justin Smith, Aubrayo Franklin, Isaac Sopoaga, Ray McDonald
LBs: Patrick Willis, Parys Haralson, Takeo Spikes, Ahmad Brooks
DBs: Dashon Goldson, Michael Lewis, Shawntae Spencer, Taylor Mays, Tarell Brown
Specialists: Andy Lee, Brian Jennings

NOTES: Snyder and Baas are the 49ers' best options right now to start on the offensive line, but rookies Davis and Iupati are earmarked to take over at some point soon. Baas is working at center, which gives him much-needed versatility to lock down a backup spot, and Snyder has a lot of experience at the guard and tackle positions.

LOOKING GOOD, BUT WITH WORK TO DO (23)
QB: Nate Davis
RBs: Michael Robinson, Moran Norris, Anthony Dixon
WRs: Ted Ginn, Kyle Williams, Jason Hill
TE: Joe Jon Finley
OL: Barry Sims, Tony Wragge
DL: Ricky Jean-Francois, Kentwan Balmer, Demetric Evans
LBs: Manny Lawson, Travis LaBoy, Navorro Bowman, Scott McKillop, Matt Wilhelm
DBs: Nate Clements, Reggie Smith, Karl Paymah, Curtis Taylor
Specialists: Joe Nedney

NOTES: Robinson is expected to win a roster spot, as special-team coordinator Kurt Schottenheimer will likely have the power to keep one position player solely for his work in the kicking game. . . . . Ginn should be on the team, but because he's a newcomer he'll still have to show something to win his spot. . . . Wragge finds himself in competition with Baas, who also plays the three interior positions. . . The free ride is over for Balmer, but he benefits greatly from the 49ers' decision to not add a defensive lineman in the draft. . . Lawson is a projected starter, but there's at least a sliver of doubt because of the discontent over his contract situation. . . Wilhelm's knowledge of the defense has him in the lead for a backup ILB spot, but Bowman and McKillop will have their shots to surpass him. . . . Clements is a projected starter, too, but with a scheduled salary of $6 million, he'll have to justify his salary in training camp. . . . Taylor would give the 49ers five safeties, but the team might be inclined to keep a promising player here with Lewis getting up in age and Goldson entering the final year of his contract. . . . Nedney is close to a lock, but the veteran must show there's still some life in that left leg of his.

MUST IMPRESS (29)
QB: Jarrett Brown
RBs: Brit Miller, Jehuu Calcrick
WRs: Brandon Jones, Dominique Zeigler, Bakari Grant, Jared Perry, Scott Long
TE: Nate Byham, Tony Curtis
OL: Chris Patrick, Alex Boone, Cody Wallace, Brian de la Puente
DL: Khalif Mitchell, Derek Walker
LB: Diyral Briggs, Martail Burnett, Brandon Long, Mike Balogun, Keaton Kristick
DBs: Will James, Phillip Adams, Keith Smith, LeRoy Vann, Patrick Stoudamire, Chris Maragos, Tramaine Brock
Specialist: Shane Andrus

NOTES: The competition at wide receiver is stiff for Jones, who was the team's highest-priced free-agent pickup last year. . . . Byham was a draft pick, but as Bear Pascoe found out last year, nothing is given to a late-round selection. . . . Boone has transformed his body since last season, and he got time at left tackle during OTAs - and that's a good sign. . . . Briggs has gotten bigger and stronger, and has a real chance to lock down a roster spot if he continues to show improvement once the pads go on. . . . James has the veteran experience and Adams was a draft pick, so they'll both get long looks.

Beat writer Matt Barrows thinks that sixth-round WR Kyle Williams has an early lead in the battle to be the 49ers' punt returner.
It's way too early to hand Williams the job. Ted Ginn is focusing on making progress as a receiver for now and LeRoy Vann was also brought in to be a return specialist. We doubt Williams will still have this job when the dust settles.

Eric Heitmann is locked in as the 49ers' starting center, according to beat writer Matt Barrows.
Heitmann won't be pushed by last year's backup, Cody Wallace. In fact, Wallace could end up losing the No. 2 gig to David Baas. Heitmann ranked 17th among centers in Profootballfocus.com's rankings last season.

Looks like Santa Clara passed the vote. I like the new stadium. Not crazy about the extra commute, but I do believe our 5 TIME WORLD CHAMPION and soon to be NFC WEST division leading 49ERS deserve a new stadium.

If you mean this season, someone's got their homer glasses on and needs to loosen them up a tad bit lol
