49ers coach Mike Singletary said in his season-ending press conference that he wants a more balanced, potentially run-first offense in 2010.
The 49ers flirted with an all-out spread attack after installing Alex Smith at QB, but Singletary wants the offense more like it was in the final four games. Frank Gore averaged 23 carries a game in the last month, and had three 100+ yard rushing efforts. Assuming he stays healthy, Gore will have no trouble getting back to the 300-carry mark in 2010. He had only 229 in '09.

Coach Mike Singletary confirmed in his season-ending presser that Alex Smith is the favorite to be the 49ers' starting QB in 2010.
"But the thing I want you to understand is we're always trying to get better at that position," Singletary conceded. "That does not mean we won't sign another quarterback. It's a very important position." Smith should prevail in any 2010 camp battle while Shaun Hill and Nate Davis compete behind him.

49ers coach Mike Singletary said Monday that Nate Clements will return to the team in 2010 as a cornerback.
Clements won't move to safety (FS Dashon Goldson is entrenched as a starter), or be cut despite losing his job to Tarell Brown at midseason and a $6M salary in 2010. Clements will have to earn his starting position back next August, but he's a solid bet to do so. Brown will likely man the nickel.

Arnaz Battle doesn't think he'll be back with the 49ers next season.
Battle is probably right. He's a free agent and fell behind Jason Hill for the No. 3 receiver job this season. The Niners will likely look to upgrade at punt returner this offseason as well.

very glad to hear this and hope it stays true. except for the idiot writer's 2 cents about alex prevailing over hill or nate davis.

and i hope we get a playmaker return man, either a back or a wideout that can help the offense too. we need speed.

Everest out as 49ers special teams coach
http://blog.pressdemocrat.com/49ers/2010/01/everest-out-as-49ers-special-teams-coach.html

The 49ers assistant coach who called for a reverse on a punt return apparently without coach Mike Singletary's blessing will not return to the coaching staff in 2010, a club source told The Press Democrat.

Special-teams coordinator Al Everest, who did not have a contract for 2010, has been told his contract will not be renewed. Everest has coached 13 seasons in the NFL, the past three with the 49ers.

The 49ers struggled this season in the return game, ranking 32nd in the league in punt returns and 23rd on kickoff returns.

The most notorious play of the season came Dec. 6 in Seattle when Arnaz Battle and Brandon Jones fumbled a reverse on a punt return in 35-degree weather. The 49ers were dominating the game up to that point, but the turnover led to a quick Seattle touchdown. Singletary and Everest were seen on the sideline having an animated discussion about the play.

The 49ers went on to sustain a 20-17 loss that all but knocked the team out of the NFC playoff picture.

"The miscommunication was - we worked on it in practice, therefore we are going to do it in the game and that was my fault for not articulating that," Singletary explained Dec. 7, a day after the game. "We might do it in the game, but we're not for sure going to do it in the game. That's my fault for not making that more plain."

Last week, 49ers punter Andy Lee made sure to thank and credit Everest after Lee was named to the Pro Bowl for the second time in his career.

The 49ers have not named a successor. Singletary is expected to immediately begin the process of filling the position.

49ers may not worry about Baas, Brooks
http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20100105/sports/100109783

SANTA CLARA — Under normal circumstances, the 49ers would face challenges this offseason to re-sign two developing contributors who might have significant value on the NFL's open market.

But there is a strong likelihood the 49ers don't have to worry about losing guard David Baas or pass-rusher Ahmad Brooks via free agency.

Baas and Brooks would have been scheduled to become unrestricted free agents in March. But because the NFL Players Association and the league's 32 owners have not agreed on an extension of the collective bargaining agreement, the rules are subject to change in a season without a salary cap.

In the past, just four accrued NFL seasons were required for an unsigned player to become an unrestricted free agent. But if there's no new CBA agreement before the opening of the free-agent signing period, players must have six seasons of service to be unrestricted.

Baas, who started all 16 games for the first time in his five-year NFL career, said he does not like the uncertainty of heading into the offseason without a contract.

“It sucks, but I can't think about it,” Baas said. “I can't control that stuff. But it should be interesting in this offseason. I don't know what's going to happen. All I know is I want to be here (with the 49ers).

“Everybody would love to build a home and stay in one spot, but that's not the reality of it. I won't rest easy until it actually comes through.”

Baas, the first pick of the second round in the 2005 draft, started just 22 games his first four years in the league. The 49ers signed veteran Larry Allen to replace him in 2006 and '07, and injuries have limited him in other seasons.

This season began shaky, as Baas was slowed by a foot injury sustained during coach Mike Singletary's “nutcracker” drill in training camp.

“Dave struggled with the (foot) deal early on,” 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye said. “I think he is healthy and better. I think the improvement has been steady and has been good.”

Brooks, long recognized as a player with tremendous physical ability, started to see significant playing time in the final six games of the season. He replaced starting outside linebacker Manny Lawson in passing situations. Brooks finished second on the team with six sacks, and appears to have a bright future with the 49ers.

The 49ers believe he is a long way from tapping his potential as a pass-rusher.

“For him, it is a progression,” 49ers defensive coordinator Greg Manusky said. “The more and more he sees things and the more and more he feels things, the better off he is going to be.”

The only thing he lacks is a long-term contract. And the 49ers are not obligated to extend him a multi-year contract offer. They could likely retain him with a restricted free-agent tender of approximately $1.1 million for the 2010 season. Teams wishing to sign a restricted free agent would have to give up draft-pick compensation.

“It's in the back of my mind, but I don't think about when I play the game,” Brooks said. “It's a business, so you never really know where you're going to be next season. It's my last year of the contract, so I let my agent take care of everything.”

Brooks could have been a high pick in the 2007 draft, but he was kicked off the Virginia team in the spring of 2006. It was too late for him to declare for the '06 draft, so he was placed in the supplemental draft that year. The Bengals selected him in the third round.

“It's all good. I love to play this game,” Brooks said. “At the same time, you want to set yourself up for later years down on the road. I missed the opportunity to come out in the (April) draft in college. I could've been a first rounder, a top dog, and I messed up.”

Cornerback and special-teams player Marcus Hudson is the only other 49ers player who would be affected by no new CBA. He is likely to be a restricted free agent.

i wish we could get that dude Joshua Cribbs from the browns to return kicks that foo's a beast he can play receiver also he gots SPEED! i just read he wants out of cleveland.
This would improve the 9ers biggest weakness and wouldnt cost them too much. With an extra 1 round pick and having to spend that extra money on that, I could see them trading for him.

A few weeks back, a member of PFT Planet alerted Florio to televised rumors in England attaching the Jaguars and 49ers as"hosts" of the two games expected be played in London next year.

Those rumors have made their way across the pond.

Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat writes that "people close to the 49ers" expect the team to give up a home game next year. He writes that the Eagles are the most likely opponent.

Writing on Twitter, Maiocco: A person I'd consider a reliable source tells me there's a 'strong, strong, STRONG' possibility 49ers will' host the game."

The matchup makes sense. Take a team with stadium problems as the home team, and pick a popular team with a strong fanbase as the away team.

Our previous post had the Jaguars possibly hosting the Redskins. If Washington and Philadelphia go abroad, the entire NFC East except Dallas will have played regular season games in London.

This was just posted on a blog from Matt Maiocco, looks like the Cribbs trade rumors were true so hopefully the Niners go after him in March

http://blog.pressdemocrat.com/49ers/2010/01/lots-of-questions-to-consider-as-offseason-begins.html
Q: Hey Matt, do you think the 49ers will take a hard look at trading one of their first 3 picks for Josh Cribbs this offseason? @BabyOno
Q: Are the rumors true about Cribbs coming to SF? @michael7420
MM: There were rumors around the trade deadline of the 49ers and Browns engaging in trade talks concerning Josh Cribbs. Those rumors were true. Some believe it might have taken a second-round pick. The Browns and 49ers could not agree on a deal.
Would the 49ers be interested if Cribbs hit the trade market? I'm sure they would. But at what price, I do not know. But let's not get too carried away with disgruntled Cribbs' trade demands. Heck, the trade period does not open until March. And, perhaps, new head honcho Mike Holmgren has some other more-urgent areas to address before he sits down to hammer out an extension for a player who has three years remaining on his contract.
So right now, there are no rumors about Cribbs coming to the 49ers ... only speculation on a website in which no reporter would attach his name.
