Anyone catch the fights on Telemundo? Hurtado looked better than he did in his last outing but still don't think he'll make it very far in the division he's in .. hopefully he scores a decent payday soon or hopefully he's getting paid alright fighting the guys he's fighting in FL.

.. and Solis got a pretty easy first round stoppage coming in the heaviest of his career at 262.5lbs =\. Solis seriously needs to stop getting fat.

Mayweather's Games Will Stop Pacquiao Fight, Says Arum

By Ronnie Nathanielsz

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum believes that Filipino boxing hero and the acknowledged hero of Asia Manny Pacquiao is likely to go for his sixth official world title by fighting WBO champion Miguel Cotto in November.

Pacquiao was at New York ’s famed Madison Square Garden with wife Jinkee and renowned journalist and boxing commentator Larry Merchant to watch Cotto win a split decision in a close and bloody bout against Ghana ’s resilient Joshua Clottey before a hugely partisan Puerto Rican crowd on the eve of Puerto Rico ’s independence day celebration.

In an overseas telephone conversation with BoxingScene.com, insidesports, Standard Today and Viva Sports from New York, Arum said that Pacquiao would be inclined to fight Cotto because Floyd Mayweather Jr “is playing games” and demanding that he gets the revenue split at 60-40 in his favor while Arum and celebrated trainer Freddie Roach insist that Pacquiao is the big draw, not “Pretty Boy” Mayweather Jr.

Arum said the deep cut suffered by Cotto in the Clottey fight which at times threatened a stoppage was “no problem” although keeping the October 17 date as originally planned for a Pacquiao fight was impossible. Arum told us “forget October, we will do it in November.”

Arum conceded that the Cotto-Clottey fight was close but that Cotto, whom he handles, “pulled it off by winning the last two rounds.” Arum said he had Cotto ahead by a point at the end of the tenth round because of the flash knockdown in the dying seconds of round one which, up to that point, Clottey had dominated.

Both Pacquiao, Roach and some of Pacquiao’s close advisers including Michael Koncz have indicated a preference for Mayweather first before Cotto and Shane Mosley.

Minutes before receiving his third “Trainer of the Year” award from the Boxing Writers Association of America at the awards dinner in New York , Saturday morning Manila Time Roach he wants “two more big fights and then retire. With (Floyd) Mayweather Jr coming up and of course (Miguel) Cotto and (Shane) Mosley and we’ll fight the winner of that down the line” even as he spoke about he himself retiring in the Philippines .

Roach said he saw “no problem whatsoever” in fighting Cotto or Mosley but added “right now I think Mayweather is the better fight for Manny and that’s the fight I want.”

He said Mayweather “is not as strong as Cotto or Shane (Mosley). He is not a big puncher . He’s been off for a long time now. He struggled with (Ricky) Hatton and was behind after six rounds . We destroyed Hatton . He struggled with Oscar De La Hoya and Manny destroyed Oscar so who’s the better fighter?”

Roach said Pacquiao’s “work ethic is amazing and I’m real happy he walked through my door one day.”

Roach praised Pacquuao saying “it gets better every time and Manny Pacquiao really is the best student in the world and we have a good relationship so I am very honored be around a guy like him and a workhorse like Manny Pacquiao.”

At the awards dinner where the Filipino boxing hero and a hero of Asia received what amounted to the coveted “Oscar Award” of boxing as “Fighter of the Year” for 2008, Pacquiao received a standing ovation when we went on stage to receive the award from BWAA president Jack Hirsch who hinted that with Pacquiao’s spectacular 2nd round knockout of Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton last May 2 may put him in contention for a third award for 2009.

In his remarks delivered in near-flawless English and interrupted by resounding applause on occasions, Pacquiao said the “long existence only proves that there is no association more prestigious than the Boxing Writers Association of America. You have passed the test of time” in reference to its 84th annual awards night.

Pacquiao drew cheers and applause when he said “it is for this reason that I chose to travel half way across the globe to personally receive this award tonight. Choosing me as the fighter of the year in 2006 was the highest accolade in my boxing career. Giving it to me for the second time leaves me with no words to express the joy and how grateful I feel. Deep in my heart I know how the BWAA has supported me in my boxing career. The members have been kind anmd wonderful to me in their write-ups.”

Pacquiao went on “Who I am, not only in America but the whole world is something I owe to you my friends. And for that, I will be forever grateful. For honoring me with this prestigious award, I promise the Boxing Writers Association of America that the boxing fans will see a more exciting Manny Pacquiao, every round, every minute, every second I fight on the top of the ring…

I also hope that this award will serve as an example and an inspiration for the young fighters to believe in themselves and keep on dreaming big. Always remember, your dreams will always be inside you. No one can take it away.

Having this award now is really larger than life; having to follow the footprints of the legendary fighters. But I didn’t do it all by myself. I had the help and support of many people. I’d like to take this rare opportunity to thank all of them, especially to our God. Without God I am not here. For all the blessing he gave me, Thank you.

And to my wife and kids: Jinkee, Michael, Jimwell, Princess and Queen Elizabeth and to my family who supported me- advice, encouragement and comfort over the course of this endeavor having more than I can express.

Mr. Bob Arum, my promoter Bob, Thanks for believing in me.

To my trainer Freddie Roach, Congratulations coach for being the trainer of the year. You deserve it!

To the members of Team Pacquiao, it has been a wonderful year for all of us.

To the Filipino nation who continue to inspire me to do my best. To all the boxing fans, to my fellow nominees who are equally great and excellent in their own way. And to all the people and institutions that I forgot to mention who in one way or another contributed a lot to making everything possible for me. Thank you! This is for you!!!"

Atlas Says Clottey Dropped The Ball, Could Have Won

By Mark Vester

Joshua Clottey is complaining of a robbery. He says the judges robbed him of a title-winning decision on Saturday night in New York’s Madison Square Garden. WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto was able to overcome a serious cut above his left eye to edge Clottey by way of a split-decision. Teddy Atlas, known trainer and television broadcaster for ESPN’s Friday Night Fights series, says it was Clottey who gave the fight away. He felt Clottey held victory in his hands and he let it slip through his grasp.

“I'll tell you who did not take the opportunity to win the fight, a guy named Clottey. He had an opportunity. He had a fighter who was bleeding. He had a fighter who looked like the ghost of Margarito was hovering over him. It looked like Cotto was doubting himself. It looked like Cotto in some way was psychologically suffering. And Clottey did not grab the fight like you want to see a fighter grab the fight,“ Atlas said.

“He stopped punching. He allowed Cotto to have moments to recover, to get himself together. He was able to steal rounds, Cotto was. Clottey did not grab the fight when I thought he had the opportunity on the scorecard. I had it 114-114 a draw. I had one round, the fourth round, an even round. But I made a mark that if I had to, I would have favored Cotto a little bit.”

Because he allowed Cotto to steal some of the late rounds, Atlas feels that Clottey lost his right to complain about a robbery. He says Clottey allowed the win to slip away with the same type of performance that Oscar De La Hoya displayed in the late rounds against Felix Trinidad a decade ago.

“I could have seen it a one point fight for Cotto but Clottey, and I hate to say this about a fighter because I respect all fighters, he lost his right to complain. If he's complaining about the decision, much like Oscar De La Hoya the way he behaved the last three rounds against Trinidad some years ago,“ Atlas said.

“If you remember that controversial fight. A lot of people thought technically that De La Hoya won that fight. But De La Hoya ran the last three rounds, did not behave like a fighter, did not try to win those rounds, just played it safe and he did not get the decision. And I said after that fight that he lost the right to complain, De La Hoya did, because of the way he behaved in those last three rounds. Well Clottey lost the right to complain about this decision. “

Calderon-Mayol Rematch is Already Being Looked At

By Ronnie Nathanielsz

Filipino challenger Rodel Mayol, taking his third crack at a world title was once again denied, this time by a questionable technical draw at New York ’s famed Madison Square Garden on Sunday morning, Manila Time, in a fight telecast “live” by Solar Sports.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told BoxingScene.com, insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports after the fight “I’m going to insist on it and I plan to do that fight in the Philippines .”

The American TV panel appeared to favor Mayol in a close but unexciting bout that was marred by several head-butts which happens when a southpaw like Ivan Calderon who was some four inches shorter fights an orthodox opponent like Mayol.

The hugely partisan Puerto Rican crowd appeared to sway the officials as evidenced even in the main event where Miguel Cotto won a split decision over Ghana ’s Joshua Clottey in a WBO welterweight title fight. It reminded us of the night at MSG when Gabriel “Flash” Elorde scored a ten round split decision over Frankie Narvaez and Puerto Rican fans rioted, wrecking the organ, throwing chairs and fire extinguisher axes creating mayhem until the police were called in.

Referee Arthur Mercante Jr deservedly got the ire of Clottey at the end of the fight for his failure to penalize Cotto for a clear takedown that hurt Clottey’s leg somewhat like what WBO 122 pound champion Agapito Sanchez did to Filipino boxing hero and then IBF champion Manny Pacquiao in their super bantamweight unification bout on November 10, 2001. In addition Cotto landed a clear low blow and what appeared to be an accidental punch to the back of the head.

An angry Clottey said “ They robbed me. The winner of the fight is the one who’s supposed to be fighting hardest. He was running and I was chasing. I threw the hardest punches. People said I’d lose the decision if it went to a decision and it did. They robbed me.”

A good right hand by Mayol and his aggressiveness against the undefeated Calderon gave the Filipino the first round against Calderon who hadn’t fought since last August when he also retained his title by a technical decision due to an accidental head-butt.

The US television panelist also favored Mayol in round two who caught Calderon with a good right straight and was the stronger fighter who kept pushing the champion back.

Mayol connected with a long right in round three even as Calderon hardly threw many punches and at the end of the third round the panel had Mayol ahead on their unofficial scorecards 29-28.

Calderon used his quickness to land a good combination and was then cautionedf by the referee for his rough tactics before a clash of heads for the second time bothered the champion who was briefly hurt when Mayol caught him with three right hands in the final minute of the round.

Two accidental clashes of heads again in the fifth round opened up a cut on Calderon’s forehead even as the commentators claimed the champion may have initiated the contact after which he was also guilty of throwing an elbow. A left hook by Mayol and a good right hand by Mayol ended the round.

The ring doctor examined Calderon twice in the fifth round as the champion appeared to get more desperate before one more clash of heads in round six forced the doctor to instruct referee Esteves to call a halt.

Rather surprisingly Tony Paolillo scored the fight 58-56 in favor of Calderon while in a four-point swing in what ended as a six round bout while respected boxing judge Tom Schreck had Mayol winning 58-56. The third judge, Steve Weisfeld scored it even at 57-57.

Mayol was clearly upset. I’m very disappointed. I thought I won the fight and as soon as his cut heals I hope they let me fight him again” said Mayol who twice before lost to Japan-based Thai Eagle Kyowa in a WBC title fight and was knocked out in the 8th round by IBF champion Ulises Solis in a fight where Mayol had Solis on the verge of a knockout but got careless and was in turn knocked out in a fight card in Rosemont, Illinois.

Calderon claimed in a conversation with Dan Rafael of ESPN.com “I thought the fight was going the way I wanted it to go.” It was Calderon’s fourth successful defense of his light flyweight title and moves to 32-01 with 6 knockouts while Mayol who trained hard at the Wild ard gym in Los Angeles under Buboy Fernandez dropped to 25-3-1 with 19 knockouts.

Arum Will Try To Close Pacquiao-Cotto This Week

By Ronnie Nathanielsz

The “Hero of Asia” Manny Pacquiao has given Top Rank promoter Bob Arum specific instructions - "get me (Miguel) Cotto on November 14."

The fight which is expected to be at a catchweight for Puerto Rican fighter Cotto's WBO welterweight champion crown will take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Arum spoke to BoxingScene.com, insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports after arriving in Las Vegas from a tremendously successful promotion at an almost sold out Madison Square Garden where Cotto narrowly beat Joshua Clottey by a split decision in a fight where Clottey claimed he was robbed.

Arum said he would “try to conclude an agreement on Monday with the Cotto people” even as he revealed “these are my instructions from Manny.”

Pacquiao and celebrated trainer Freddie Roach as well as some of Pacquiao’s advisers were looking at a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr before Cotto. However, Arum said the rib injury reportedly suffered by Mayweather in training which resulted in an indefinite postponement of his scheduled July 18 fight against Juan Manuel Marquez, “means Manny couldn’t possibly fight Mayweather until sometime next year.”

Arum said “it was a real surprise” and that they hadn’t heard about it when Pacquiao made the decision to fight Cotto. Arum predicted “it would be a great, great fight and I can’t wait to see it.”

Pacquiao’s close friend and confidant Rex “Wakee” Salud said the Cotto fight is the easiest to make because Cotto is also handled by Arum. Salud indicated the WBO welterweight title held by Cotto would be at stake even though the fight is likely to take place at a catch-weight of between 143-144 pounds.

The 28 year old Cotto who has a record of 34-1 with 27 knockouts weighed 146 for the Clottey fight and Salud believes he won’t have problems coming down a couple of pounds considering the big money he will make by fighting Pacquiao, the No.1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Pacquiao and wife Jinkee are scheduled to arrive in Manila at 11:00 p.m. Monday on a Northwest flight from New York.

Arum revealed that Pacquiao was “surprised at the tremendous ovation he received which was really something” from the huge predominantly Puerto Rican crowd at Madison Square Garden when he walked in with wife Jinkee to watch Filipino light flyweight Rodel Mayol battle undefeated Ivan Calderon of Puerto Rico in the main supporting bout to the Cotto-Clottey clash. Pacquiao watched the main event intently before giving Arum instructions to get a Cotto title fight done. Arum himself had earlier been pushing for a Pacquiao-Cotto showdown although he indicated to us he was not averse to having a Pacquiao-Mayweather megabuck fight later this year.

Former Pacquiao business manager Rod Nazario who largely guided his career to WBC flyweight title against Chatchai Sasakul and the IBF super bantamweight title against Lelohonolo Ledwaba and the Ring Magazine belt against Marco Antonio Barrera with promoter Murad Muhammad claimed that Pacquiao is “too fast and too strong for Cotto who is also scared. I believe he lost that fight to Clottey and he quit against (Antonio) Margarito sitting down.”

A partner of Nazario, respected TV boxing analyst and original Team Pacquiao member Moy Lainez “if that’s the way Cotto fights (referring to the Clottey fight) then against Pacquiao he’s good for five rounds. If Pacquiao connects with the punches Clottey hit him with, its goodbye.” Lainez also said Cotto appeared “scared of cuts and I think he has no heart, especially after the Margarito fight. He could have gotten up but he didn’t. He’ll fight Pacquiao for the money.”

Joshua Clottey Targets Paul Williams, Wants Him Next

By Mark Vester

If Joshua Clottey is unable to secure a rematch with WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, he wants to target the one man that nobody else wants to fight - Paul "The Punisher" Williams. Clottey lost a close split-decision to Cotto last Saturday in New York's Madison Square Garden. He believes that he was robbed by the judges and the ref was too scared to take a point away from Cotto.

Clottey has a lot of respect for Cotto and his skills, but he felt the ref should have taken a point away for the tackle that hurt his knee, and when Cotto sent him down from a punch to the back of the head. He said the ref was scared of the near 18,000 Cotto fans in attendance.

"He's a good fighter, I can't take that away from him. Boxing is a very tough sport. So when a fighter comes out you have to give him a congratulations whether you win, lose or draw. He's very tough so I respect him. I hit my knee on the floor [when Cotto threw him down] so I thought the referee would do something about this but the people were bullying [him]. The referee was scared to do something. And [Cotto] hit the back of my head and the referee was scared, he did nothing. He was scared of the people, that the people were going to fight him," Clottey said to BoxingScene.com's Jose Aguirre.

Last year Clottey was trying to land a fight with Paul Williams. He tells BoxingScene that he still wants that fight.

"I want to fight Paul Williams very, very much. I want to fight that guy. I want to fight Paul Williams. He's a weak welterweight. He's a weak welterweight so I want to fight him," Clottey said

Mayweather-Marquez May Get Pushed To September 19

By Mark Vester

According to WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez, the fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. may get pushed back to September 19, which falls on the weekend celebration of "Mexican Independence." Mayweather, through a press release, revealed on Sunday that he injured his ribs in training and was unable to move forward with the Marquez bout. The fight is scheduled for the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

"It's a shame, but ultimately I'm not angry because this is a physical sport and we risk a lot. But I do feel upset because I had a great training camp and it's unfortunate. Let's see what happens. I hope they reschedule it for September 19 in Las Vegas or earlier if possible, but I'm not going to stop going to the gym. I will continue training to get even better. It is unfortunate that this has happened," Marquez told The Record .

Marquez says the September date was likely, and says HBO and Golden Boy Promotions have been in talks for that particular date.

Joe Calzaghe Would Consider a 10 Million Dollar Return

By Mark Vester

Former champion Joe Calzaghe has been retired for a few months but the offers continue to pour in. Calzaghe says the desire to fight is no longer there but he would consider a return to the ring for the right amount of money. He would return for an offer of £10 million but also knows that nobody will put that kind of money on the table.

"The only temptation is the cash," Calzaghe told Zoo Magazine. "I’m owed a lot, so obviously I could still use some more. But to fight again, just for that, would be a big mistake. £10 million! I’d come back for that! But, realistically, that’s a joke. Nobody is going to offer me that in my weight division. Anyway, my hands are still sore and I can’t achieve anything else."

Fighters like Paul Williams, Chad Dawson and Carl Froch continue to call him out but Calzaghe is paying no attention. He knows that new stars will always continue to pop up and issue challenges in his direction. Calzaghe says that it's better to stop while you're ahead. He can't fight forvever.

"There will always be fighters coming through – but I can’t fight forever. Eventually I’d get my ass kicked."

Roy Jones vs Danny Green Appears To Be Legit

By Mark Vester

It seems the rumors of Roy Jones Jr. vs. Danny Green are starting to shape up. According to the Australian version of Fox Sports , a press conference is scheduled for Wednesday morning, with Jones [via satellite] and Green, and involves a huge announcement that is sure to be a disclosure of the two boxers facing off. Green recently dumped his August 5th bout with Shannon Taylor with little reason.

According to various reports in Australia, Jones and Green have reached an agreement to fight at the end of the year. Jones faces Jeff Lacy on August 15. Green is expected to see action on the undercard to hype up their future meeting. The fight would be a real slap in the face to Anthony Mundine, who for weeks made comments that Green would have no place to go if he didn't agree to his rematch terms

Roy Jones: "Mayweather, Mosley Will Beat Pacquiao"

By Mark Vester

Former four division champion Roy Jones Jr. is not a believer that pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao will be able to defeat Shane Mosley or Floyd Mayweather Jr. Speaking on KFXX, Jones doesn't really see size as the big downfall for Pacquiao. He feels Mosley and Mayweather are faster and stronger. He doesn't even think it's fair to place Pacquiao in those fights.

“I think Pacquiao loses both of those fights. I love Pacquiao as a fighter. I don’t really think his size, these guys are a little bit faster and bigger. To me its not really a fair situation to put him in,” Jones said.

Jones plans to face Jeff Lacy on August 15 and already has a planned fight with Danny Green in November. He plans to fight on for some time. He looks at Hopkins' decision to fight on, but also says that Hopkins is avoiding him. Jones won a decision over Hopkins in 1993. Issues over money and other problems have always squashed a planned rematch.

“I have people that advise me as well as I know in my head too. I have guys that I listen to that will tell me the truth. 30 is the new 20, so 40 must be the new 30, because look at Bernard Hopkins. He’s still beating people at 43 and 44 years old," Jones said.

"He don’t want to try me though because he don’t want to suffer one of those beatings. I’m close to his age but still he knows he’ll suffer one of those beatings so he don’t want to fight me. He’ll fight anybody that he sees he can beat. You have to kind of careful choose I guess for people like him when you’re fighting at that age. Myself, I still haven’t gotten to that point, I’ll fight anybody. When I get to that point where I carefully have to choose, I’m going to stop.”

Gamboa Eyes Big Things For The Future With Top Rank

By Mark Vester

Undefeated featherweight prospect Yuriorkis Gamboa is looking for big things in the near future. The young star is now being co-promoted by Germany-based Arena Box and top American company Top Rank. Gamboa appears in his first Top Rank promoted bout on the Latin Fury 10 pay-per-view that features Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in the main event on July 25 in Mexico.

"We can't hide how happy we are about the relationship with a man like Bob Arum, who to me is the best promoter that exists," said Luis De Cubas, Arena's pointman in the United States, to El Nuevo Herald." I have no doubt that Gamboa will accelerate at a high rate and reach a great height in the sport. For Gamboa it is important to gain a place like Mexico, which has been the second to Cuban boxing legends such as Mantequilla Nápoles and Urtiminio Ramo."

De Cubas told the paper that Gamboa will continue to step up in class and face much bigger challenges as his career moves along with Top Rank.

"Gamboa has faced a lot of quality opponents," De Cubas said. "Our projection for him, is that he will able to beat stronger opponents and fighting at higher weights. This union between Top Rank and Arena will achieve that goal

Pacquiao Still Wants Floyd Mayweather Jr. Most of All

By Ronnie Nathanielsz

While media around the world continues to speculate on who Filipino boxing icon and "Hero of Asia" Manny Pacquiao will fight next, the world’s No.1 pound-for-pound fighter is enjoying a vacation in the picturesque island of Bohol with wife Jinkee, three of their four kids and adviser Michael Koncz.

When the Pacquiao family was en route to the world famous Chocolate Hills and stopped for call of nature, Koncz told us a huge crowd immediately gathered around Pacquiao and his family forcing Koncz himself to employ some crowd cotrol, cutting short our brief telephone conversation.

Word still persists that Pacquiao wants Floyd Mayweather Jr and that if Mayweather’s reported injury heals then they may clash in a megabuck fight on November 14 instead of Pacquiao facing WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto.

There was no word from Top Rank promoter Bob Arum about how his planned negotiations with the Cotto camp went althougb Cotto himself had said after his split decision win over Joshua Clottey at Madison Square Garden last Saturday that he wanted a break.

Meantime Golden Boy Promotions continues to push for a Pacquiao fight against WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley with trainer Freddie Roach himself reportedly saying the fight would bring Pacquiao more money than a clash with Cotto.

For the time being Pacquiao appears to be enjoying the speculation as to who he will fight next even as he spends quality time with his family on what is turning out to be a truly enjoyable family vacation

Kevin Johnson Vs. David Haye - A Fight That Makes Perfect Sense

by James Slater - It has been reported in The Southwark News that the treatment David Haye needed on the injured back that forced him out of this Saturday's IBF and WBO heavyweight title fight with Wladimir Klitschko has, "gone to plan," and that he will, "resume full training in two weeks' time." This is the word direct from "The Hayemaker's" trainer and manager, Adam Booth. Booth also said that he and his fighter, "need to take the next couple of days to clear our heads and see where we go from there."

With Haye seemingly out of the Klitschko picture for the next few months at least (although there does remain a slight hope on the former cruiserweight champ's part that a fight with Vitali can be made this year) it looks like it's time the 28-year-old started looking around for his next opponent.. Unless he is content to remain inactive - and it's now seven months and counting since Haye's last fight - the exciting heavyweight contender needs to get in the ring soon; preferably against a credible and recognisable name.

One man who I think fits the bill perfectly is unbeaten 29-year-old, Kevin "King Pin" Johnson. As far back as the lead up to his fight against Monte Barrett, Haye has been called out by Johnson. Now, with both guys still hoping for a world title shot, Johnson and Haye need to keep themselves sharp and they need to earn this shot at a world title in the eyes of the fans. Johnson has been making steady progress, with his last three wins - over Bruce Seldon, Matthew Greer and Devin Vargas; all of them coming via stoppage - being his most impressive.

Haye, of course, has had just two fights as a heavyweight, yet he has managed to make himself a big enough name to the point where guys like Johnson want to fight him, knowing as they do that a win would make them some noise. Haye should grant his 22-0-1(9) rival his wish of getting him into the ring. Let's face it, if this fight were made it wouldn't exactly be a reach or a step too far for either fighter. Both men are primed and peaking wannabe heavyweight champions, and as such both fighters should think they can defeat the other.

Johnson last fought in May, and he will need a next opponent pretty soon. While Haye, once he's back up to speed training-wise, needs to get back in the ring and see himself tested again as soon as possible. I'm pretty sure "King Pin" would answer the call if "The Hayemaker" sought to make the fight, but will Haye look in the unbeaten hope's direction?

If not, and unless he does remain idle, who else would offer Haye such creditable and easily available opposition? This fight can be made, if Haye wants it. Look at the rest of the top-ten or so, and all the other recognisable names are either busy this year or have plans in the working - the Eddie Chambers' and the Alexander Dimitrenkos are either fighting each other or they are in line to fight someone else. The easiest quality fight Haye could get for himself - one that would get genuine fan attention - would be one against Johnson.

The winner would be looked at as a fighter who has at least tried his best to earn his title shot, and the victor could then aim to get either Wladimir, Vitali or, should he win on Saturday, Ruslan Chagaev in the ring next year.

Both Haye and Johnson need to pass a big test before they go into a world title fight with the fans' belief that they can win. How about them testing each other this summer?

Is Floyd Mayweather Angling for a bout against Manny Pacquiao?

By Robert Jackson: News broke this past Monday that the comebacking Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather Jr. was injured during training making it necessary to cancel or postpone his July 18th fight against Mexican Warrior Juan Manuel Marquez.

Some boxing insiders have suggested that this is just a ruse or ploy for 'Money May' to get out of the Marquez fight all together and face Pacquiao in November of this year, and that the injury claim is bogus. As of today further information regarding Mayweather's injury has yet tobe disclosed. Also notable is the fact that the Mayweather/Marquez fighthasn't been officially rescheduled.

if it is the case that Mayweather now has Pacquiao in his sights rather than Marquez let's look at the reasons and ramifications.. First off, Marquez loses a reported $4M payday. Reports have it that the interest and anticipation for the Mayweather/Marquez fight was lukewarm at best and that ticket sales were floundering. Cotto's valiant but lackluster victory over Ghanian Joshua Clottey could also be a negative factor for staging a Pacquiao-Cotto bout. Shane Mosley while trying to land the fight with Pacquiao gave into all of Team Pacquiao's terms, but alsoprematurely-announced that the fight between himself and Pacquaio was all but a done deal, a false proclamation as we now know, making Shane Mosley seem desperate. This will be the BIGGEST money fight out there for Pacquiao and PBF!

This writer believes that 'Money May' was genuinely hurt while training, more accurately while sparring, most rib injuries during training occur when you take shots to the ribs. Having not fought for a year and a half the body loses its fighting toughness, and the hardest thing to get used to physically and mentally after being out of the ring for a while is getting hit again.

If the Mayweather/Marquez fight is bypassed for a more lucrative match-up in November featuring 'Money May' and Manny Pacquiao it will have taken more than just Mayweather getting hurt for this to happen. Higher-ups in the boxing hierarchy: those who have a financial stake in this happening will have to co-sign and underwrite this endeavor.

But...if the past is any indictor all of the criticism, naysaying, and disdain will be directed towards the 'Pretty Boy' and if this fight does happen the only questions that 'Money Mayweather' will need to answer will be answered in the ring in November.

The World's Highest-Paid Athletes
Kurt Badenhausen

Drop-offs from last year include boxer Floyd Mayweather (has not fought since December 2007), NFL players Ben Roethlisberger and Dwight Freeney (both made the 2008 list after inking contracts with big signing bonuses) and Formula One driver Fernando Alonso (just missed the cut).

The highest-ranking of the four newcomers to the list is boxer Manny Pacquiao who earned $40 million over the last year, tied for the sixth most. Pacquiao cemented his claim as the world's best pound-for-pound fighter with convincing knockouts of Oscar De La Hoya in December and Ricky Hatton in May. The two blockbuster fights garnered more than 2 million pay-per-view buys in the U.S. and earned Pac-Man $30 million combined.

Pacquiao's massive popularity in his native Philippines is why companies like Nike and San Miguel beer have signed him to endorse their products. Pacquiao intends to use that popularity to run for political office when his ring career is over.

Our 20 highest earners have a very international flavor with Pacquiao one of eight non-Americans on the list.

Emanuel Steward Says Wladimir Klitschko Will Be In The Hall Of Fame One Day - Just Li

by James Slater - As fans know, former heavyweight king Lennox Lewis has just been inducted into the prestigious Hall of Fame in Canastota. It could certainly be argued that had Lewis never been trained by Emanuel Steward - who is also enshrined in The Hall - he wouldn't have got there. Seeing Emanuel take over as his coach after being shocked inside two-rounds in a upset against Oliver McCall, Lennox went on to score his most impressive victories..

Today, Steward trains the man who is seen as the best big man in the sport, in Wladimir Klitschko, and Emanuel says he sees plenty of similarities between Klitschko and Lewis. Steward also says the very same negativity Lewis had to listen to from the critics is what those people who are turned off by Wladimir are saying about him today.

"We had the same criticisms of Lennox that we get now with Wladimir," Steward told The Times newspaper. "There are a lot of similarities between the two. They are only as good as the guys put in front of them let them be. Americans have given up on the heavyweights because they don't dominate it, but I think they are coming round to Wladimir now.

"Vitali's fight with Lennox made him a big, big hero there. Wladimir has not had that fight yet. He needs some devastating performances."

Perhaps the current IBF and WBO champion will put on such a devastating display against Ruslan Chagaev this Saturday, and win himself the vacant Ring magazine belt that is at stake. Steward has complete faith in his fighter, and he says he is sure Wladimir will one day be inducted into The Hall; following Lewis' footsteps.

"It was great to see that for Lennox," Emanuel said with reference to Lennox's recent induction. "I have no doubt Wladimir will be in there one day. Like Lennox, Wladimir is very intelligent and a lot of the time we just talk. He used to make the same mistakes, but I think he is the complete fighter right now.

"He's been stopped, he's been knocked down. But he's learnt how to clinch, how to survive. If everything is sunny all the time, you don't learn until it rains one day. When I was with Lennox, I told him Wladimir would dominate the heavyweight division one day."

At the moment, Wladimir must share the distinction of dominating the division with his WBC heavyweight champion brother, Vitali. But as those two will never fight (or at least we don't think they ever will) Wladimir must continue to rule the weight class as part of a duo. Of course, unbeaten Ruslan Chagaev will have something to say about it when it comes to who is the world's best big man, and his chances of spoiling both Steward and Klitschko's plans cannot be ruled out.

If he keeps winning, though, maybe Wladimir will soon get the respect it took Lennox Lewis such a long time to get.

Yuriorkis Gamboa Set To Promote Local Boxing In Miami

By Laz Izada - Yesterday afternoon at The Bonefish Grill in Miami, Cuban boxing sensation WBA Interim Featherweight Champion Yuriorkis “El Ciclon” Gamboa 15-0,13KO’s and local promoter Henry Rivalta formed a partnership along with attorney David Valdez, creating Ciclon Promotions. Gamboa a former Olympic Gold Medalist from Cuba, upon arrival in the states two years ago had always dreamed of promoting fights and had the rights to the Ciclon Promotion name. He felt that now was the opportune time to launch the promotion along with Henry Rivalta of Top Level Boxing which has been promoting exciting local fights in Miami for the past two years..

Rivalta who will be running the boxing operations, said he was honored to be chosen by Gamboa for the promotional partnership. Rivalta believes they are a good mix, that they are both “young, aggressive, know what they want, and are not going to stop till they get it”

They are looking to sign and promote a top contender in each weight class. There fights will be held in Miami Beach (the former mecca of boxing in the 1960’s) where they will be looking to bring boxing back to the world famous beach area. There first show will be held on August 21 at an undetermined venue in Miami Beach.

That's pretty cool. Hopefully he doesn't get too heavy into promoting that he lacks on his own career. It's pretty dope that he's putting on small club shows for local fighters.

He could probably get some of them on Friday Night Fights if he headlines a few of them.

Also if anyone cares Eddie Chambers is fighting undefeated Alexander Dimitrenko (who is fairly good but has sort of an annoying peek-a-boo style) in an eliminator for one of Wlad's titles. Hopefully Chambers comes in shape and ready to fight.

I've always liked Chambers and think he's the best of all the American heavyweights fighting right now. If he wouldn't have completely shut down against Povetkin he could have taken that fight.
