Hot! DJ Drama Talks Gangsta Grillz History, Being Voice Of The South, Lil’ Wayne & More

When it comes to southern rap mixtapes DJ Drama is the authority. With a history dipped in unprecedented success, Drama went from being T.I.’s official DJ to breaking Young Jeezy into the mainstream, helping Chris Brown find his stride again, and being his own artist, as well as an industry executive at Atlantic Records.

Sitting down with ill Will at Means Street Studios in Atlanta where he and his Academy brothers Don Cannon and DJ Sense create most of their hits and record their Shade 45 radio show, the iconic DJ discussed how he became the voice of the south, while also breaking down the history of his infamous Gangsta Grillz mixtapes. He talked about his relationship with Lil’ Wayne, how the bootleggers helped him out to begin with, his friendly rivalry with DJ Smallz of Southern Smoke mixtape fame, and with album sales being so low Drama shared his opinions on the future of the album format, as well as a few other things.
