I've been reading more about classic films and wanted to check some out, but I've never enjoyed an old movie (pre-1960's) that I can think of. Can anyone recommend any good classics?

Here's a list of some pre 60's films that I've enjoyed:
Night of The Hunter (1955)
The Sea Wolf (1941)
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
The Sweet Smell of Success (1957)
Harvey (1950)
Sunset Boulevard (1950)
The Grapes of Wrath (1940)
Suddenly (1954)

If you're into international cinema, there was a lot of interesting stuff going on in the 50's. Akira Kurosawa in Japan made some great movies

I've really been wanting to check out the Hitchcock films. I dl'd Vertigo but haven't watched it yet. I also downloaded Citizen Kane but haven't watched it yet either. I can't stand James Stewart but I've heard nothing but good things about Vertigo and Rear Window.

I mean, any movie being considered "THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER" by countless movie critics is setting some ridiculously high expectations. That's why I was disappointed by The Godfather I think. Probably doesn't help that I was expecting it to be like Goodfellas

I've actually seen 12 angry men and it was alright I guess. Singing in the rain tho?
12 Angry Men is one of those rare cases when pretty much the entire plot is set inside one room, and yet it's interesting and never overstays its welcome.

Singin' in the Rain might not be for everyone, but it's definitely one of if not the most celebrated musicals.

It's been sooooo long since I've seen Citizen Kane I just remember thinking it was overrated as hell. Memory is fuzzy though.
I think what makes Citizen Kane so popular is what it did for the time. It's like having a modern audience watch Rashomon and them not thinking it's a big deal because we see lots of movies that use objective vs subjective camera styles and that mess with narrative truth. But when it came out, it was groundbreaking.
