Is Floyd trolling us?!

By Mike Coppinger

Everyone was waiting for the official word on an expected Floyd
Mayweather vs. Robert Guerrero fight, but the pound-for-pound
king threw everyone a curveball late Tuesday night.

"Money" Mayweather (43-0, 26KOs) announced on Twitter and
Facebook that he's close to fighting Devon Alexander (24-1,
13KOs). The fight would take place May 4 at the MGM in Las
Vegas. Both Mayweather and Alexander are represented by
powerful boxing adviser Al Haymon.

"The negotiations for my fight are almost done," said
Mayweather via the social media portals. "The front runner is
IBF Champion Devon Alexander. It'd be a unification bout at
welterweight."

This announcement comes just days after Alexander pulled out
of a Feb. 23 Showtime fight with Kell Brook. Alexander cited a
biceps injury and said he would be ready in six weeks time. The
bout with Brook was originally slated for Jan. 19, but Brook
was forced to pull out with injury.

It's unclear at this time what occurred in the negotiations with
Guerrero, but it was thought by most in the boxing world that it
was a mere formality that "Mayweather-Guerrero" would be on
the Vegas marquee come Cinco de Mayo weekend.

Mayweather's last fight came in May 2012, a unanimous
decision win in perhaps his most exciting fight ever. Alexander
defeated Randall Bailey in Oct. in a grossly boring bout.

Lol, terrible fight. I don't want to pay to see Alexander make all that noise when throwing a jab only to get countered over and over. I think Floyd should just retire, Marquez spoiled it by knocking Pacquiao out cold. Now nobody wants to see Floyd and Pacquiao fight. Floyd would have been better off fighting Bradley or Marquez again at least they own victories over Pacquiao.

Nice to see the IBF step up.

IBF: We Will Not Approve
Mayweather vs. Alexander

Devon Alexander will not be allowed to try and unify the
welterweight division against Floyd Mayweather Jr at the
expense of Kell Brook, according to the International Boxing
Federation.

Alexander and Brook were meant to fight for the former's IBF
belt in Detroit on February 23, but the American withdrew on
Monday citing a biceps injury.

Waters were then muddied on Wednesday morning when
Mayweather Jr, the unbeaten pound-for-pound best boxer on
the planet, claimed he was close to agreeing terms with
Alexander for a unification fight.

"The negotiations for my fight are almost done. The front
runner is IBF Champion Devon Alexander. It'd be a unification
bout at welterweight," he told his official Facebook and Twitter
pages.

A scrap with Mayweather Jr would be financially more
beneficial for Alexander but, as the IBF champion, he has an
obligation to fight their mandatory challenger Brook, who
earned the right by beating Hector Saldivia in October.

The only way Alexander could have even tried for a unification
fight with Mayweather Jr would have been to have got
exemption from the IBF within 90 days of his last fight on
October 20.

And according to them, that has not and will not be granted.

In a statement, they said: "We have not received any requests
or information on this from either camp.

"Because Alexander is under contract to fight Brook he would
not be granted an exception to fight Mayweather."

Brook's promoter, Eddie Hearn, promised to fight tooth and nail
for Brook, the 26-year-old from Sheffield who has been in a 14-week training camp ahead of the proposed Alexander fight.

The unbeaten Brook said on Twitter that he was willing to face
anyone in order to become a world champion, writing: "I have
been in camp for 12 weeks I want to do damage. Alexander, a
vacant belt or even Mayweather I don't care!"

The IBF's stance backs up the thoughts of Hearn, who has
called on Alexander's promoters, Golden Boy, to show their
hand.

Now I am the biggest Mayweather fan and I always side with him no matter what! With that said................................................................................HELL NAW!!!!! Alexander is booboo and I wouldnt even watch that fight! Please Money say it aint so? WHY? Now if this fight were to really happen, this would tell me that Floyd isnt as confident in his skills anymore and that he knows he is getting up there in age and doesnt want to lose that "0" on his record. Thats it. I just hope this is a joke because I couldnt even back Mayweather up on this one. Fight Bradley, Marquez, Manny, Guerrero, or Canelo and Im str8. Got Em!!

It's kinda sad actually that Mayweather takes this route if it's true. I think people will buy into him being one of the best ever once he's done but I think most hardcore boxing fans will agree that he could've tested himself much more than he has, especially at 147 and 154. I have always said that I don't expect him to fight at 154lbs, because he barely walks around at that weight if at all, he's not a very big dude. But he could've challenged himself much more at 147lbs and never did. Everyone and their mama wanted to see Mayweather/Margarito and it never came close to happening but he fought Baldomir and Judah? Even if the grudge between Judah and Mayweather was enough to sell a fight, it didn't sell anywhere close to what a Margarito fight would've. He could've fought Cotto way sooner than he did too.

Maybe Pac getting KOd the way he did kinda shook Floyd a little bit? Maybe he's thinking that could be me.

To me, and maybe I'm in the minority here, but I thought a Guerrero fight would be a very physical fight, certainly no walk in the park. Maybe Floyd thinks that too and rather fight a guy who isn't very physical at all.

This of course is only if Floyd does fight Alexander. I still kinda think he's pulling our legs or has some kind of hidden agenda, maybe trying to squeeze out a few extra bucks in negotiations.

I think the Guerrero fight is a big risk for Floyd also. If the Ghost were able to get away with all that wrestling bullshit he got away with against Berto Floyd could be in deep shit. Mayweather knows how to fight dirty pretty well himself but i still believe Floyd doesn't want to be involved in a wrestling match. That is what is ruining the sport imo also

I think the biggest thing was, he saw Guerrero's chin and thought he should avoid him. I still think that Floyd would get the upper hand in a wrestling type fight because he's quite a bit stronger than people think and the refs always jump in quick if someone is roughing him up (illegally).

All this is good publicity for Alexander. Even though no outside of boxing circles seems to care, it's free press for Alexander, another Al Haymon advised fighter.

Just heard that Mayweather offered Guerrero 2.5 mill but Guerrero wanted 4 mill. That is the issue. I think Guerrero should take the 2.5 because no casual fans know who he is. Also since he thinks he can beat Mayweather why not take it and win then he becomes a big star. Got Em!!

^^ or could win a controversial decision a la Bradley and have a difficult time getting a meaningful fight afterwards...

I don't blame him for holding out. That's crap money man. His story alone will generate interest in this fight, much more than faggot Victor Ortiz.

If that's the hold up then Floyd is being super greedy. He's going to make like $30 million regardless give Guerrero an extra $1.5. Floyd always demands these 95/5 split purses.

Anyways, whatever the hold up its getting bizarre. Even hearing rumors of Floyd doing some WWE stuff.
