Floyd doesn't care. He didn't feel like paying the sanctioning fee, and since the purse was so insanely high the sanctioning fee ended up being $200,000. Floyd decided he doesn't need to pay the fee to keep a belt he really doesn't need at this time. Timothy Bradley is now elevated to WBO champion (gets Floyd's belt) since he just became mandatory to Floyd's belt. More info below.

WBO Strips Floyd Mayweather of Welterweight Title

Staying true to its word, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) has formally stripped Floyd Mayweather Jr. of its welterweight title Monday afternoon.

Mayweather obtained the strap via 12-round decision over reigning titlist Manny Pacquiao on May 2, in what became the richest fight in boxing history. Three major titles were on the line in their blockbuster event in Las Vegas, with Mayweather adding the WBO strap to his collection that included titles from the World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Association (WBA) at both welterweight and junior middleweight.

The fact that the WBO never received its $200,000 sanctioning fee, however, meant that Mayweather—who stands to earn in the vicinity of $230 million for his night's work versus Pacquiao—was merely on borrowed time in terms of parading around with the title. The Puerto Rico-based sanctioning body gave the pound-for-pound king upwards of two months to pay the debt, ruling to strip him of the crown as that deadline has now passed.

“In the present case, Mr. Mayweather, Jr. failed to pay the $200,000.000 fee required of him as a participant of a WBO World Championship Contest,” revealed Luis Batista, chairman of the WBO Championship Committee . “Despite affording Mr. Mayweather Jr. the courtesy of an extension to advise us of his position within the WBO Welterweight Division and to vacate the two 154-pound world titles he holds, the WBO World Championship Committee received no response from him or his legal representatives on this matter.

“The WBO World Championship Committee is allowed no other alternative but to cease to recognize Mr. Floyd Mayweather, Jr. as the WBO Welterweight Champion of the World and vacate his title, for failing to comply with our WBO Regulations of World Championship Contests.”

With the ruling, Timothy Bradley Jr. will gain full recognition as WBO title. The once-beaten welterweight claimed an interim version of the title following his 12-round win over Jessie Vargas on June 27 in Carson, California.

The interim status came with the understanding of a full upgrade upon Mayweather being stripped, which turned out to be the case. The alternative was Mayweather paying the sanctioning fee and agreeing to face Bradley (or Vargas had he won), the latter being the far less likely scenario of the two given their promotional affiliations—Bradley aligned with Top Rank, Mayweather's former promoter and with whom he refuses to do business, save for extraordinary circumstances.

The long-awaited showdown with Pacquiao was one such notable exception, although a bout that functionally took more than five years to finally bring to fruition.

Mayweather has the right to appeal the decision, but would have to formally file by July 20 in order for the WBO to honor and review such a request.

“This is a final decision of the WBO World Championship Committee. The affected WBO Participant may appeal to the Complaint and Grievance Committee pursuant to WBO World Championship Section 34, which per Rule 3(e) of the WBO Appeals Regulation, must be submitted in writing to the WBO President within fourteen (14) days of the date of this decision as its sole and exclusive remedy.”

Mayweather (48-0, 26KOs) remains a recognized welterweight champion by the WBC, and as a unified champion by the WBA. He is also recognized as the junior middleweight champion by both organizations, despite by-lays disallowing fighters holding titles in more than one weight class, as well as Mayweather's own claims of plans to relinquish all titles currently in his possession.

I think it's been well established on here that at that this point in his career, belts, weight class, organizations, mean absolutely nothing to Floyd, it's all about the purse.

What he says vs what he does is why he gets on a lot of peoples nerves though. He said he doesn't care about belts and stuff but he's never relinquished a title. He said it himself, how can he relinquish something he's never received? At the end of his last fight, he said,"Strap me up!" When the WBC made Manny #2 he said he was going to cough it up but he never did. But the Other governing bodies don't force Floyd to face his mandatories, the WBO and IBF would have and that's why he doesn't hold those titles
