By Miguel Rivera

According to multiple sources in Mexico, WBC junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (41-0-1, 30KOs) will likely face WBA "regular" beltholder Austin Trout (26-0, 14KOs) in a unification on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Canelo was originally looking to face Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto on the date, but Cotto lost a twelve round unanimous decision to Trout on December 1st in New York.

Even though he clearly has the much bigger name, Cotto became a less attractive option after suffering two consecutive defeats. While most experts believe Canelo is hunting for another possible opponent, the unbeaten fighter gave the green light on Trout a long time ago. Canelo had his eye on Trout since February 2011, when he sat ringside in Guadalajara and watched Trout dominate his older brother Rigoberto Alvarez.

The May 4th card, on HBO pay-per-view, is headlined by Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a defense of his WBC welterweight crown, reportedly against mandatory challenger Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero.

Props to Canelo and Golden Boy for doing the RIGHT thing. I was worried they'd pick a safe opponent like Angulo since a Floyd fight is on the horizon.

If Canelo wins this he'll finally earn credibility. He wont just be hype anymore.

BTW, Adrien Broner will also be on this card. Should be a great PPV.

Mayweather vs Guerrero
Canelo vs Trout
Broner vs ____ (Gamboa? Depends on how deep the Floyd/50 beef truly is).

Thats what I am talking about! I know they dont really want to fight Trout but what other options do they have? Cotto lost and no one wants to see that. Now they can unify the belts. Also if Broner is on this card, this will easily be the best card Ive seen or atleast in a very long time. Got Em!!

Man this fight is tough to call. I have a funny feeling that Trout is gonna out box Canelo but Canelo will win a controversial decision. So Im not sure if I will go with Canelo or Trout by decision. Im sure the fight will go the distance. I dont see Canelo knocking out Trout. His defense is to good and he has great boxing skills. Should be tough bout for Canelo. If Canelo dominates then dude will really be sumthin special. Got Em!!

I think Canelo got this. Cotto was doing just fine first half of the fight, the problem was he's not a true junior middleweight and his size started to show how much of a disadvantage it was, add to that Cotto seemed fatigued as hell after like round 5.

Canelo is a true junior middleweight. His power will be a factor. He's younger, he's not battle scared like Cotto. I don't see Trout having the power to keep Canelo off him. He'll have his moments of course, but Canelo should be able to impose his will. I can see a late Canelo KO or clear UD.

Cotto was doin ok, but he was never in control of the fight. Also it isnt like Cotto isnt a good fighter anyway and he is also a better boxer than Canelo so thats understandable. With that said, I think the longer the fight goes on the more it favors Trout. Thats why I think it will be a close decision. Canelo may start off fast and as Trout adjust and starts to frustrate him, I see Trout winning the later rounds. Again should be a cool fight. The winner gets much props for sure especially if theres no controversy. Got Em!!

I like trout he's the hungrier fighter and he has nothing to lose and this is a bad match for canelo style wise
Yea I do agree Trout is the hungrier fighter also. Canelo seems to think he is at the top already and only wants a big payday. he better be focused on the task at hand because watching all access with Trout, dude is very dedicated and wants this for his family big time. Cant wait. Got Em!!

I don't know man, Trout didn't look that good to me at all against Cotto, I think overall it was a shit fight and Cotto simply did worse than Trout.

I think Canelo is hungry to prove his critics wrong. He's a bigger puncher than Cotto at 154 and his boxing skills are underrated. He's not a come forward brawler, he's much more of a boxer puncher who uses great combination punching to wear down opponents. Cotto really lacked putting combo's together against Trout. 1-2 punches at a time, it was fairly easy for Trout to anticipate what he was trying to do and keep enough space between them.

trout to me is a good enough puncher& counter puncher , as where he can outbox alvarez clearly, but I hope trout will not get shafted on the cards by corrupt judges, I can see this being a even fight by the 12 round

I havnt made my pick yet but Im just analyzing what I see. I think Canelo has a big future but for some reason I see this being a very tough fight. Maybe like Floyd/Castillo. Also I was impressed by Trout against Cotto actually. Maybe I am higher on Cotto than u are so I was kinda shocked how Trout beat him. Again should be a great fight and who ever makes the best adjustments will win. Got Em!!

Lol @ Canelo avoiding/scared of trout. Been eyeing him since Feb 2011. Canelo take care of business, I want this fight over by the 10th. Canelo by tko.
U have to remember ducking doesnt necessarily mean being scared. Its business, risks involved etc......Trout is a high risk low reward fight for Canelo. If Canelo loses he can forever kiss Floyd bye bye. If he wins its a cool win but casual fans dont know Trout. Trout beating Cotto has helped his name a bit though. Got Em!!

Yea I just hope whatever happens its a clean decision. I just dont see a ko in this fight. Its possible for Canelo due to his power but I believe Trout has a good chin plus very good defense. Got Em!!

I love the matchup, much better than Angulo even though he's one of my favorite fighters. I think Canelo is an unheralded boxer and will still find a way to look good against Trout and will have killed 2 birds with one stone with a win. A win gets him the Floyd matchup and earns the respect of the boxing community who are still doubting him. Even if he loses, he still might get a fight with Cotto. Great choice of opponent if this comes off.

Canelo vs Trout great match up. And the winner will fight Mayweather for the lineal title and ring belt in September if Mayweather beats the Ghost. Damn Golden Boy is making some good ass fights.

Canelo vs Trout = Chavez Jr vs Martinez...same results.
Huh? Well who is Martinez in this situation? To me if u are gonna use that fight in comparing these two then Trout would be Martinez who will box and move while Canelo would be Chavez Jr. with the bigger punching power looking to cut off the ring. So u are saying that Trout will dominate and win pretty much every round? Just curious if u can elaborate more. Got Em!!

You guys are proping Canelo for stepping up to the plate?

Prop his camp for not avoiding a potential loss. Canelo would fight anyone I am sure.
It's usually the fighters camps that avoid certain fights.

Nice PPV, I can't wait.
Well its just a figure of speech. We all know its the camp/promoters etc...who make the fights. The only difference about Canelo though was he didnt seem interested in fighting Trout. After each win he would only mention Floyd. 2ndly at the Trout/Cotto fight as soon as Trout was announced the winner Canelo got up and left. Trout tried to call Canelo out but he left the building lol. Im sure if Cotto would have won Canelo wouldve probably got in the ring just to start the hype for their fight lol. Got Em!!
