Definitely a dope month. The first fight on the list is something you don't see very often, two solid amateurs, undefeated in the pros, still working their way up the rankings, and they're fighting each other. I'm impressed.

I still can't believe Andy Lee Vs. Craig McEwan is getting play on HBO. Talk about 2 guys that aren't going to do shit. Lee is pretty terrible and McEwan just doesn't seem all that fantastic. I guess him easily beating Vera looks better today than it did when he did it but I still remember him getting beat up by Darnell Boone and still getting the decision. I haven't seem him fight all that recent so maybe he's gotten leaps better.

Me too man. I think the black Russian might take it, it's a toss up. what do you think?

Fight fans and betting enthusiasts will be treated with a rare showdown between two well regarded prospects Friday evening at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee, FL when California based Ukrainian Ismayl Sillakh defends his NABF Light Heavyweight crown against Yordanis Despainge of Coral Gables, FL via Cuba.

Right off the bat, it’s key to know that both fighters were topflight amateurs. Sillakh posted a ridiculous 302-16 record while winning a Gold Medal in 13 tournaments. Despainge was a product of the famed Cuban amateur boxing program, where he competed in more than 200 bouts and fought in the 2004 Olympics, defeating future world champions Jean Pascal and Karoly Balzsay in addition to a top four finish in the 03’ World Amateur Championships.

As professionals, they’re amongst the top rising stars in the 175 lb division. On paper, this is definitely the most competitive fight of an action packed weekend, as a pair of fighters looking to make a strong impression to US fight fans will have the opportunity to do so before a nationally televised audience on ESPN 2’s Friday Night Fights.

As a pro Sillakh, 14-0 (12 KO’s), has been virtually flawless, most notably piling through former contender Daniel Judah as well as trial Horses David Whittom and Rayco Saunders. At 6’1, he’s a rangy puncher who can hurt you with both hands and is effective to the body for a fighter of his stature. The 26 year old is also quite patient for an up and comer, perhaps due to his extensive amateur background where he battled many of the world’s top fighters. In his April 2010 victory against Judah, available below, he impressively stopped the longtime contender in less than two rounds. So far, it’s easy to understand why boxing insiders think so highly of him.

Despainge, 8-0 (4 KO’s), is also 6’1 and on the fast track as a professional, defeating the likes of former interim champion Richard Hall and previously unbeaten Frank Paines (available below). He relies heavily on a strong jab and looping hooks. Despainge, 31, is a bit old for a fighter labeled as an up and comer, but appears surprisingly fresh inside the squared circle especially considering how long he’s been boxing.

Aside from being the week’s most competitive fight, it’s arguably the toughest to pick. In fact, we are yet to find a line for this bout. Cases can easily be made for both fighters, but thus far as a pro, we’ve seen more potential out of Sillakh.

He’s a bigger puncher, has shown better all-around skills and can end the fight before final bell. Despainge on the other hand can be a bit methodical at times. Against Hall and Paines, he won easily but not impressively due to his inability to step on the gas. Aside from his strong jab, many of Despainge’s punches are wide and easy to avoid, while Sillakh’s blows come from everywhere imaginable.

Expect a competitive fight in the early rounds before Sillakh takes over en route to retaining his NABF crown via ten round unanimous decision.

Pick: Sillakh

I like Despainge (I'm sure you probably guessed that though ha) but Sillakh I believe is the goods. I would pick Sillakh over top 10 LHW's today if he were to fight them .. I think he's gonna be something special.

That being said LET'S GO DESPAINGE!!
