Arum enthusiastic about 5th Pacquiao – Marquez fight

Pacquiao Marquez 5 Pacquiao vs. Marquez 5 manny pacquiao juan manuel marquez By John F. McKenna (McJack): Top Rank CEO Bob Arum is enthusiastic about a possible 5th fight between eight division world title holder Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO’s) and Mexican icon Juan Manuel Marquez (55-6-1, 40 KO’s).
Arum was quoted in the Philippine Inquirer saying No. 5 is now the biggest fight in boxing, bigger than Pacquiao – Mayweather.”
Arum said the original timetable for Pacquiao’s next fight of April 20 is now off the table because of the nature of Manny’s devastating one punch KO at the hands of Marquez. Arum is well pleased by early indications that Pacquiao – Marquez IV appeared to have surpassed expectations in Pay Per View (PPV) sales.
The Top Rank CEO chief refused to speculate as to when No. #5 would take place, adding that because of the magnitude of the match a considerable amount of time would have to be given to the promotion of the fight.
There is little doubt that another Pacquiao – Marquez would be a huge sell to boxing fans. Pacquiao was ahead on the scorecards and at the point of dominating the fight when he ran into the right hand by “Dinamita” that felled him.
There are many of Pacquiao’s fans who are urging the eighteen year veteran of the ring to retire fearing that he will suffer from the numerous head shots he has received over the years. The name of boxing great Muhammad Ali immediately comes to mind when discussing pugilistic Parkinson’s disease. Ali is by far the most famous boxer to suffer from the effects of the malady but there have been numerous other fighters over the years who have suffered from the effects of receiving too many head shots.
The great Sugar Ray Robinson stayed on way too long in the boxing game and suffered from Alzheimer’s before he died from the disease. Floyd Patterson and Ingemar Johansson are just a couple of the numerous fighters who have been afflicted by taking too much punishment in the ring.
Friends of Pacquiao are concerned that because of the way he fights Manny will someday suffer from the same affliction that plagues his famous trainer, Freddie Roach. Hopefully Pacquiao can see the writing on the wall and decide to hang up the gloves while he still retains his mental faculties.

The latest fight in this series evens things up if you consider the outcome. Marquez no longer needs to complain about being robbed or denied victories he felt he legitimately earned but was never given – this win erases all of that.
So where does this leave the superfight we are all waiting for? Mayweather/Pacquiao?
IMHO, a Mayweather/Pacquiao fight was never the ‘end all’ fight that ALL boxing pundits claimed it was. And to say that Floyd ‘waited out’ Pacquiao’s prime would be a ludicrous statement considering Floyd is about 2 years older than Pacquiao – so he’d be waiting out his own prime also. The biggest fight(s) out there for Floyd Mayweather Jr. involve Canelo Alvarez and Sergio Martinez. The Martinez fight is much more makeable now with Pacquiao out of the way. Id’ much rather see this fight than a Pacquiao fight anyway.
So what did Floyd lose? A chance to say that he was the best of his era? Maybe! A $100M payday? Another Maybe! A Canelo fight will earn Mayweather ½ of that $100M and a Sergio Martinez fight will earn Mayweather the other half! And he would be considered the best of his era after beating these guys. Another thing that negates Mayweather from being the biggest loser is that it wasn’t him that got KO’d Saturday night.
The biggest loser(s) in this writers opinion are Top Rank, Manny Pacquiao and…Freddie Roach.

By Bill Phanco: Last Saturday night’s mega fight on HBO pay per view between Juan Manuel Marquez (55-6-1, 40 KO’s0 and Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO’s) reportedly generated a huge $10 million live gate at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada with 15,403 tickets sold and 908 comps. Needless to say this is very good money.
The PPV totals still haven’t been released they should be soon. This won’t be the case like in the Manny Pacquiao vs. Tim Bradley fight where we don’t hear anything for ages about the PPV totals and then end up hearing conflicting totals. I see the Pacquiao-Marquez 4 fight bringing in a respectable 1 million and above PPV buys. A rematch will likely bring monster numbers given how exciting this fight turned out to be.
Marquez knocked Pacquiao down twice in the fight, once in the 3rd, and a final time in the 6th, to get a stoppage victory in the 6th after he knocked Pacquiao fully unconscious with a highlight reel knockout. Pacquiao put Marquez down on the canvas in the 5th after stepping on his foot and then hitting him at the same time with a left hand.
The difference between Marquez’s two knockdowns and Pacquiao’s one knockdown were like night and day. Marquez actually hurt Pacquiao with his two knockdowns, whereas with Pacquiao’s knockdown it was more of a case of him stepping on the front foot of Marquez and hitting him at the same time. In other words, it really wasn’t what you’d call a legit knockdown.
Marquez did have problems with Pacquiao after Marquez was caught along the ropes in the 5th and was hit a flurry of shots. In the 6th, Marquez was bleeding from a cut above his nose he was starting to look beat up from Pacquiao’s fast shots. It didn’t look like Marquez would be able to go too much longer with the punishment he was taking.
Pacquiao had done all this damage in just in the 5th and 6th rounds, and there were still six more rounds to go. However, Marquez caught Pacquiao with a right hand when Pacquiao got a little carried away with himself while trying to inflict some damage in the last 10 seconds of the 6th

Nice fight, props to broner if he takes it. Like I said Abril stylistically is the only guy at 135 that can give broner problems. Don't think he has the offensive output to win a decision though and we'll have to see how his chin holds up.
Broner vs. Abril in Talks For February 16th on HBO

Carlos Rodríguez, president of Dream Team Boxing, has confirmed that he's negotiating with Golden Boy Promotions for Richard Abril (17-3-1, 8KOs) to face WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21KOs) on February 16th on HBO.
"We are negotiating with Broner, and I can say that there's an 80% chance that this fight will take place. The people from Golden Boy seem to be interested in this bout, which will be a great step forward for my fighter," Rodriguez said.
Golden Boy would like Broner to face WBO champion Ricky Burns, but Burns suffered a setback on Wednesday when his scheduled defense for this coming Saturday was postponed until January 26th.
Abril has been inactive since April's controversial split decision loss to Brandon Rios. He was then scheduled to fight Sharife Bogere for the vacant WBA crown. That fight was canceled when Bogere suffered an injury in training.
Broner captured the WBC title last month with a TKO win over Antonio DeMarco.

Broner actually beat the top guy within his division, Canelo hasn't even fought a top 5 guy at 154 yet and he's a belt holder.
Broner is just talking shit anyway. He would jump to fight Manny or Marquez in an second.

That's why i asked what's worse, I don't think Canelo is 100% right in what he did. My point was Broner supporters will find a way to justify this. No one on broners resume justifies him saying Pacquiao and Marquez(hall of famers) are not worth his time. Even if it was just talking shit or not. Also you can't just go assume he would take those fights if they presented themselves to him. If we start assuming Ill take his words in that interview and interpret them as another fighter that is looking to protect his 0 losses. No way broner takes pacquiao or marquez this early in his career and risks taking an L. Also I don't have no problem with Broner the guy along with Canelo are the future of boxing, I'm just pointing out that both will carefully manage/protect their careers. It's how boxing works now, so I find it funny that someone criticizes canelo and his camp for doing what's in his best interest, then broner and his camp proceed to do the same thing in a way but his actions are completely justified. So once again I ask Czar which is worse? You can answer to if you like.

After 35 years, HBO boxing analyst Larry Merchant is ending his time with the company that has become the sport's biggest American outlet, and will call his final fight ringside for HBO, as Nonito Donaire faces Jorge Arce in Houston.
But Merchant says that he's not exactly looking to retire, and will seek other outlets and opportunities from here:
"I'm not the retiring kind," Merchant said. "I look forward to my next act. I've had a few discussions with people. It could be in writing. It could be in television. It could be in the new media space. I'm going to see what develops and see what I feel I should do."
Merchant, 81, has had a memorable career, which has drawn both great praise and plenty of ire from fans and his media peers. At times, Merchant could be the exact voice you wanted, someone willing to call a situation what it is, which can be rare in the boxing industry. Other times, though, Merchant would seem to be stirring the pot just for the hell of it.
Perhaps his most famous moment in the end was really a product of neither, though, as he and Floyd Mayweather got into a near-physical altercation in 2011, after Mayweather's controversial knockout of Victor Ortiz. As Merchant questioned the "sucker-punch" and Mayweather's reasoning for it, for once he didn't seem to be trying to do much more than ask the question. Mayweather turned aggressive, Merchant reacted, and we all got the classic response from an 80-year-old man to the world's best prizefighter, "I wish i was 50 years younger and I'd kick your ass!"
Maybe it wasn't professional. Maybe it wasn't "classy." But it was something.
Mayweather and Merchant later made nice after Floyd's win over Miguel Cotto this year, with a perfectly cordial post-fight interview.
Merchant's chair will be filled, as has been expected for years, by Max Kellerman. HBO is looking to get younger, and Kellerman is as good a choice as any to be that consistent No. 2 man alongside Jim Lampley.
