Roach: If Marquez's Weight Gain Is Natural, I'll Kiss His Ass

By Edward Chaykovsky

Trainer Freddie Roach is not convinced that Juan Manuel Marquez is a natural fighter. BoxingScene.com posted photos last week of Marquez, who looked very muscular, bulked up and cut. At 39-years-old, Marquez's body looks better than it ever has in the past. Next Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Marquez will challenge Roach's fighter Manny Pacquiao for a fourth time.

Roach is suspicious because Marquez's strength and conditioning coach is Angel "Memo'' Hernandez, who once supplied illegal performance enhancing drugs to track stars Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery. Marquez started working with Hernandez before the third fight with Pacquiao a year ago. In their third meeting, Marquez was moving up by two weight division but easily withstood all of Pacquiao's punches and often stood toe to toe with the Filipino star.

"If [his body] is natural, I will kiss his ass,'' Roach told USA Today. "[Marquez] has gotten bigger and gained weight — it throws up a red flag. I've been accused so many times of my fighters being on steroids (that) I hate to accuse other people. But it is part of our life, part of the world we live in,'' Roach said.

While Roach has his own thoughts, Pacquiao's conditioning coach, Alex Ariza, is friends with Hernandez and does not believe there are any illegal activities going on.

"Memo is brilliant — I don't have any suspicions. When you get someone like that who knows the science of exercise and nutrition . . . well, we saw a whole different fighter when he fought Manny last time. It's not because (trainer) Nacho Beristain is teaching (Marquez) something new. It is because Memo now has Marquez's confidence. He has done things to his body. He has taken a good fighter at 39 and completely evolved him," Ariza told USA Today.

Roach claims that he wanted both boxers to take part in random drug testing, but Top Rank was not on board. Top Rank CEO's Bob Arum told the paper that neither side ever made a request for random testing.

***So, Manny, was accused of taking P.E.D.'s without a single shread of evidence and Roach cried foul. Now he does the samething to, Marquez. And, Ariza, has to try and clean-up Roach's statement with a seemingly corporate statement. I guess Roach finds it quite odd that a fighter moves up (2) classes, adds bulk and still has all of his speed and reflexes. Seems like an EVEN playing field to me.**

Schaefer looking for an opponent for Malignaggi’s next fight
Boxing news published November 28, 2012 | 4 Comments

By Bill Phanco: WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi is in need of an opponent after his desired rematch against big British star Ricky Hatton fell through due to Hatton getting blasted out by Vyacheslav Senchenko last Saturday night in the UK. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is now looking at picking out Malignaggi’s next opponent from one of these fighters: Danny Garcia, Amir Khan, Andre Berto, and Adrien Broner, according to RingTV.

Malignaggi, 32, wants a big name for his next title defense and this may be his last chance to get a big name before gets beaten. Malignaggi almost lost his title in his last fight against fringe contender Pablo Cesar Cano, who Malignaggi barely beat by a 12 round decision last October in a 12 round split decision win. That fight showed that Malignaggi is vulnerable even against fringe level opposition, and that puts more pressure on Schaefer to try and get the biggest name he can because Malignaggi is so vulnerable.

Khan: He’s already beaten Malignaggi and Khan has his own problems right now having lost twice in a row.

Berto: This is winnable fight for Malignaggi but not an easy one because of Berto’s superior power. This wouldn’t be big fight for Malignaggi.

Garcia: This would be a decent fight but it would be a really dangerous one for Malignaggi and he could get hurt in losing to Garcia. Malignaggi doesn’t have the power or the skills to win Garcia’s respect. This fight could end very badly for Malignaggi, and he might not get the big payday that he was hoping to get against Hatton.

Broner: By far this is the best option available for Malignaggi if he wants to attract fan interest and have a possible chance of winning. It’s doubtful that Malignaggi can hang with a fighter like Broner because of his immense talent, but with Broner moving up two entire divisions to make the fight hap

Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer says he's discussing a potential Floyd Mayweather vs Robert Guerrero fight for next year.
Facebook
Twitter

Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions says that discussions are already underway to match Floyd Mayweather against Robert Guerrero next.

From BoxingScene.com:

"I have started conversations with Team Mayweather for a potential fight between Robert and Floyd. I really have nothing more to say at this point, except that we’ve had ongoing discussions. ... I think if a fight with Mayweather can happen, it would be a fascinating matchup. Because with Floyd, you have unquestionably the best pound-for-pound fighter, the most talented and gifted athlete [in boxing]. Whoever Floyd fights, he makes it look easy. ... I would be interested to see, ‘Can he win, let alone make it look easy, against Robert Guerrero?’ I have my doubts because Robert really showed us what he’s all about. It would be a great matchup."

I don't know whether or not Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO) is a serious threat to defeat Floyd Mayweather. What I do believe for a fact is that Guerrero, as much as any other reasonable candidate (read: not a Top Rank fighter), has earned the right to be in this discussion.

He jumped two weight classes this year, fought a sturdy, solid welterweight in Selcuk Aydin and won a brawl, and then beat former titlist Andre Berto in an even more vicious fight.

Early this year, when Guerrero campaigned for the Mayweather fight on May 5, which ultimately went to Miguel Cotto, he was alternately laughed off or coldly dismissed. And I think that was fair, even in hindsight. Guerrero hadn't fought in a year, had never fought over 135 (yes, yes, I know, a 138-pound catchweight with 76-year-old Joel Casamayor), and just didn't have the résumé.

So what did Guerrero do? He went out and fought a solid welterweight, and won. Then he fought a guy who has been near the top of the division for years, and won more emphatically. Robert Guerrero got in the ring and proved how serious he is about landing a huge money fight at 147. What more can you ask?

It sounds like Golden Boy seriously intends to chase this fight for him. It wasn't all that long ago that GBP seemed to consider Guerrero a second-tier guy on their roster. But he's forced everyone to take him seriously now.

If he gets the fight, I say he deserves it, and that's not press release material. That's my honest opinion. The guy has fought his way into what he wanted.

Schaefer said yesterday that Mayweather may make his decision next week, with more eyes on the boxing world thanks to Pacquiao-Marquez IV. Guerrero, Canelo Alvarez, and Miguel Cotto are considered the front-runners. Guerrero may have edged past the pack.

Roach: Marquez Rejected Testing, We'll Still Kick His Ass LMAO

In a recent interview with USA Today, trainer Freddie Roach expressed suspicion about Juan Manuel Marquez’s physique in recent photographs as he’s looked extremely muscular and bulked up compared to how Marquez has looked in the past. Roach feels performance enhancing drugs may be the reason for Marquez’s newfound muscular body.

Marquez’s current strength and conditioning coach Angel “Memo” Heredia has a history of supplying performance enhancing drugs to other athletes so to see Marquez bulked up like never before automatically raised a lot of eyebrows.

BoxingScene caught up Freddie Roach during the Manny Pacquiao Media Day at the Wild Card Gym and asked if he and Pacquiao’s team had asked for any additional drug testing to ensure Marquez is not taking anything illegal.

“Well, we tried to get testing done but they refused to do it so we didn't get the voluntary drug testing. It has to be voluntary and they said no. So what are we going to do? We're going to do what we can but it's not going to help him though because [we'll] kick his ass no matter what,” revealed Roach.

Marquez was a considerable underdog going into the third bout with Pacquiao last year mostly due to him not looking good at his previous attempt at Welterweight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. Marquez looked soft, bloated and lethargic in that fight but now looks the complete opposite.

Lol, "take the test" or no fight.... If they think he's juicin' they should pull a Mayweather and demand that he get tested or don't fight. That way they can fight without worrying. It's not like they really need to fight Marquez anyway. Now that Marquez refused, that raises some suspicion in my opinion. If you're clean you shouldn't have a problem with giving a little bit of blood to prove you're not juicin'.

You don't get it Tony, they want Marquez to be randomly tested but not Manny. Manny can do random testing by himself if he wants to prove he's clean, it's 3 years later but he can do it. This is nothing but BS. Roach was a same guy yelling that Manny don't have to submit to Mayweather's random testing demands, let the commission do their job. Now's it's Marquez refuses to be randomly tested. lol It's funny how 3 years changes people.

lol @ Broner being his best chance to win out of those guys mentioned. Thats the worst chance for him to win in my eyes. Then again he wouldnt beat any of those guys. I think dude is weak in my opinion. I mean he has some boxing skills but hits like a bitch! He would get destroyed and ko'd quick by any of them period! Got Em!!

from what roach said, and again this is coming from roach so who knows if he's just talking out his ass, it was Bob Arum who said no to the testing not just for marquez but for the both of them. IF that is true I'm guessing bob thinks it will look bad if they do testing for this fight, but didn't want to for floyd in years past, also cuz Chavez declined against Martinez.

Bob Arum Shoots Down Richard Schaefer's Proposal

Two weeks ago I spoke to Bob Arum regarding a possible Abner Mares vs. Nonito Donaire showdown that would require both Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank to have to work together to make the fight happen. Arum revealed he had no interest in doing any regular co-promotion with Golden Boy and would instead be willing to offer them a sum of money for the services of Mares.
A couple days later, Rick Reeno spoke to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer who heard Arum’s comments. Schaefer extended a proposal to Top Rank where they would step aside and let Top Rank handle the promotion for Mares-Donaire only if Top Rank would be willing to step aside and let Golden Boy promote a Lucas Matthysse-Brandon Rios fight.
BoxingScene spoke with Bob Arum and relayed Schaefer’s proposal which Arum shot down and appeared not to be willing to even entertain the thought.
“It's not major league baseball. We don't trade fighters! You trade baseball players, you don't trade fighters. This guy knows nothing about the sport of boxing” Arum would tell BoxingScene.
As I tried to ask a follow up question, Vice President of Boxing Operations for Top Rank Carl Moretti intervened and asked that I stop asking Golden Boy related questions.
