Roger Mayweather: Floyd Jr. ain’t afraid of Pacquiao; he’s going to fight him
Boxing article posted on November 15th, 2012 | Post Comment

By Chris Williams: Roger Mayweather says his nephew Floyd Mayweather Jr. met with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum over a month ago to discuss putting a fight together between him and Arum’s money fighter Manny Pacquiao and Roger sees the fight happening in the near future, as well as a fight between Mayweather and WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley.

Speaking with Jenna Jay in On the Ropes Boxing Radio at Doghouseboxing.com, Roger Mayweather said “My nephew [Floyd Jr] ain’t scared of no Pacquiao.”

Of course he’s not. Mayweather Jr. knows what he sees in Pacquiao and that’s money in the bank. Pacquiao’s fighting style would be completely ineffective against him. The only issues that they need to iron out is the money split, venue, date and drug testing. Those are the only things that could potentially get in the way of a mega fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao.

If Arum comes at Mayweather with this 50-50 stuff then the fight won’t get made. That right there is obvious. Mayweather is the cash cow of boxing and he’s fighting at a high level still despite being 35. He’s not his last fight like Pacquiao, and he’s not looked poor in his last three fights like Pacquiao. But most importantly, Mayweather’s fights are doing really well on pay per view. He’s not had a fight with less than impressive PPV numbers recently like Pacquiao did in his loss to Tim Bradley last June.

Those numbers were never officially released by HBO, and there’s disagreement about what the numbers actually are. We’ve heard 800,000 buys floated but there’s also talk that the numbers were in the 600,000 range, which is a huge step back for Pacquiao if true. He hasn’t had those kinds of numbers since Arum made the blunder of matching Pacquiao with his Top Rank stable fighter Joshua Clottey back in 2010.

SECRETARY OF SPORTS PARDONS JUANMA LOPEZ; HE CAN FIGHT SOON
Boxing article posted on November 15th, 2012 | Post Comment

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO- Former two time world champion Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez will fight soon after the Secretary of Sports and Recreation of Puerto Rico, Henry Neumann, pardon his one year suspension.

“Juanma Lopez can continue his career starting today”, Neumann said. “Practically, this is a pardon from the Secretary (of Sports) taking into consideration Juanma’s career in amateur and profesional. Juanma has been an example, serving his community work and adding the forgiveness of the referees Roberto Ramirez Sr. and Jr.”.

Lopez was suspended one year by the Puerto Rico Boxing Comission after bad comments he made about the Ramirez’s after his defeat by TKO against Orlando Salido on March, 12, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

“I want to thank Neumann, the Puerto Rico Boxin Comission, my promoters Top Rank and PR Best Boxing Promotions and my team, but also I want to thank Roberto Ramirez Jr. and Sr. for their forgiveness, and I want to tell them that I learned a lot from this experience”, Lopez said. “I feel so good because I can fight again and continue my career. This is my sport, but is my job too”.

Lopez (31-2, 28 KOs), who is ranked #5 in the featherweights on the WBO’s November rankings, has been training hard with Orlando Piñero and Alex Caraballo in Caguas, and with his new addition Freddie Trinidad, emphasizing the defensive work, at the Caimito Gym.

“We are working hard, training and training for my return to the ring. I saw in the press about a fight for January 19 against (Wilfredo) Papito Vazquez, well if we reach agreements, the weight and everything, we fight against Vazquez or anybody”, Lopez said. I’m willing to fight anybody”.

Broner: I’m the next #1 cash cow in boxing after Pacquiao and Mayweather depart
Boxing article posted on November 15th, 2012 | Post Comment

By Chris Williams: Undefeated Adrien Broner (24-0, 20 KO’s) sees himself as becoming the biggest pay per view and gate attraction in boxing after the aging #1 and #2 money fighters in boxing Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao depart from the sport in the near future. Broner, only 23, is already bringing in huge ratings on HBO and building tons of fans with his Mayweather-like fighting style and his impressive wins.

Broner faces WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco (28-2-1, 21 KO’s) in a fight on Saturday that’s more of a formality for Broner than actual fight. It’s seen by many boxing experts as an unofficial handing off of the WBC 135 pound title from DeMarco to Broner in a fight that will be televised by HBO at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.
DeMarco is a great fighter, but Broner is simply on another perch several levels above him. We’ll see that right off the bat and it won’t be competitive.

Broner said to espn.go.com “After Mayweather and Pacquiao, I will be the cash cow and the top guy in the next era.”

While it sounds like bold talk from a still unproven fighter you have to believe what he’s saying because Broner has been breezing through his opposition and showing a combination of speed, power and defensive skills that haven’t been seen in the sport for a long time. To be sure, Broner has the Mayweather-esque boxing skills but with an added ingredient with his huge power. He’s like a better version of Mayweather, if that’s possible. Broner is a better talker than Mayweather for sure, and he’s got a special kind of charisma that Mayweather lacks at times. Broner simply has everything that a fighter could want to become a huge PPV attraction and a crossover star.

Broner figures he’ll be at 140 and then 147 real soon, and that’s when the big money will come into his life because he’ll be able to face the top guys like Danny Garcia, Amir Khan, Andre Berto and possibly even Manny Pacquiao if his promoter Bob Arum is willing to take a big risk with his aging Filipino star. But whatever the case, Broner is going to be the next #1 cash cow in boxing and he’ll hold that position for a long time.

Roger Mayweather: “if Floyd Wouldn’t Fight Pacquiao He Would Go Down In History As A Scared Mother*cking Champion”

Jenna: You mentioned Manny Pacquiao, he actually has business at hand and has to beat Marquez in their upcoming fourth fight, which clearly is no easy task. Do you think he will do it?

Roger: Well, as long as they allow him to take those steroids he will. Long as they allow him to take those pills he will. But I know one thing, his last fight, didn’t he lose to Bradley? I know everybody said that he won, but you know how that work, Bradley is with Bob Arum, and Arum has both of them guys so they have to fight Floyd.

Jenna: You said that Bob Arum has both Pacquiao and Bradley, doesn’t that mean the fight won’t happen, as Bob and Floyd don’t have the greatest working relationship?

Roger: No, they do. They all good, don’t you worry about that. They want to do this fight, I know because I sat there and spoke with Bob Arum for a couple of hours with my Nephew. I already know, I already know they can make both those fights. Him and Bradley and him and Pacquiao.

Jenna: How long ago did you sit down with Bob Arum?

Roger: Probably about a little over a month ago.

Jenna: So a month ago Floyd was talking about fighting both Pacquiao and Bradley?

Roger: Floyd’s gonna fight em, why wouldn’t he fight them? Anytime you are getting that type of money, how the hell are you not going to fight them. He has to fight Pacquiao cause that’s the fight people want to see and people talk about. If he wouldn’t fight Pacquiao he would go down in history as a scared motherf*cking champion, wouldn’t he? If he didn’t fight Pacquiao, OK then. My Nephew ain’t scared of no Pacquiao.

Jenna: Roger do you think they will come to an agreement, as the problems before have been drug testing and money.

Roger: Problem ain’t no money, my nephew is undefeated! He’s an 8 time world champion. It ain’t going to be no problem about money cause everybody knows who’s going to get the most money cause who’s got the best record? Who won the world titles? OK then, that’s who going to get the most money.

Jenna: Well Pacquiao came out in the press and said that Floyd treated him like a bum only offering him 40 million with no PPV.

Roger: You ain’t ever made 40 million. He has not made 40 million period. He’s been getting 20 million dollars. So what you crying about.

Jenna: It seems Pacquiao is not happy with the money amounts and that’s the reason the fight won’t happen.

Roger: The fight will happen. If we give him that 40 million, 45 million it’s going to happen, 45, 50 million he’s going to fight for it. You think he ain’t?

Jenna: No, I honestly don’t think he will if he doesn’t get his side of the PPV.

Roger: He will take it, if he don’t then his ass don’t want to fight no way. He don’t want it no way if he don’t take that 40 million dollars.

Jenna: You have been talking about Pacquiao and Bradley being the only two fights for Floyd, but do you see anyone else out there or are those really the only two fights for your nephew?

Roger: Well I just say that cause Bradley got a win over Pacquiao and Pacquiao is the name as far as fighting go. I’m sure there could be some other fights, but those would be the main fights right now as I look at it, those will be the main fights for Floyd in the next 3, 4 , 5 ,6 months. Those will be the fights.

Jenna: Alright, will I have one final question for you Roger. Being that you are the Uncle and trainer of Floyd Mayweather Jr., the fact that you do get into the ring with him and do the pad work, have you notice any signs of decline in and the recent times you have been in the gym with Floyd?

Roger: No, not yet I haven’t. Not yet have I seen no decline, I have not seen his work ethic change. I mean he do pretty much what he was doing before. I don’t got to tell him you need to hit the bag, you need to do this, you need to do that. I have not seen that yet. I have not seen it yet as far as his fighting, but time will tell you what he’s got left. But you can only really see that in the ring, against somebody he’s fighting against. That will tell you how much he’s got left or what he ain’t got left. But we’ll see..

ANDRE WARD ON FROCH AND KESSLER: "THEY HAVE TO SAY MY NAME"
By Ben Thompson | November 16, 2012

"I think with guys like Froch and guys like Kessler, you know, I mean, just being honest with you, it's like, they have to say my name, because if they want to be considered the best, they have to say my name," stated undefeated super middleweight king Andre Ward, who commented on recent statements made two of his former opponents, Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler. In the past, Froch and Kessler have been reluctant to talk about a potential rematch with Ward, who easily defeated both men during his march to victory in the Super Six Tournament. Now, they seem much more vocal about the possibility of facing Ward again. While Ward welcomes the opportunity, he's not sure if either man is really willing to back up their comments.

"When these guys are getting interviewed, they know that they can't avoid saying my name, so they're put in a position where they have to say it. Now, how bad they really want the fight, time will tell. I mean, we haven't got any offers or anything from either guy that says that they want to fight," Ward explained during a recent surprise visit to the FightHype Radio Show. "We don't have to fight either one of those guys because we beat both of them, but it is an option and we're open to it. We just need to see, you know, what it looks like. We gotta see what the opportunity looks like, but in terms of me having something official, we haven't got anything official from either fighter."

News: Broner-DeMarco; Froch-Mack; Fight Breaks Out At ShoBox Weigh-In
Boxing news published November 15, 2012 | 8 Comments

CINCINNATI (Nov. 16, 2012) – This Saturday night marks another evening of the “Adrien Broner Show.” That’s what the world champion boxer called his 12-round fight against Antonio DeMarco at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J., and televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

The native Cincinnatian will be attempting to gain his second world title against DeMarco, this time the World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight championship. It was nearly a year ago when Broner won the WBO super featherweight championship in his hometown. Since then Broner has continued to rise to stardom now becoming a fixture in the global boxing scene and fighting in front of HBO-televised audiences.

At the young age of 23, the future has a lot offer for Broner, and the next step is against the experienced Mexican, DeMarco. With a 28-2-1 (21 KOs) record, DeMarco is looking to finish off his best year in the sport. It started last October when he rallied for one of the most exciting knockout finishes of 2011 over Jorge Linares to win the world title. Since then, DeMarco has won twice more, the latest being a first round stoppage over a 24-1 John Molina in September.

Pre fight adrien alone

“DeMarco is definitely my best opponent so far on paper,” Broner said in a media conference call. “It is the biggest fight of my career thus far. I am not looking past anyone. I have to take it one fight at a time.

“I have been training very hard,” Broner continued. “I want to thank DeMarco and his team for taking the fight and coming to the U.S. to fight me. I know he is a great champion. He is ready and I am ready. It is going to be an electrifying fight and I am ready to go.”

Though the southpaw DeMarco is going to present a new challenge, Broner still believes that he will be able to show his opponent why he’s called “The Problem.”

“You are going to see a totally different Adrien Broner on Saturday night,” Broner said. I am going to be able to show more of my skills on Saturday night because DeMarco has such talent. They say if one good talent goes up against another good talent, it brings out something in the elite.

“DeMarco has fought good guys, but he hasn’t fought me.”

Fight Breaks Out At ShoBox Weigh-In

The fighters who’ll compete in the co-feature tomorrow/Nov. 16, on ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME® (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., had to be separated by their camps after a mini-melee broke out Thursday during the weigh-in.

The fracas between super welterweights Joey “Twinkle Fingers” Hernandez (22-1-1, 13 KOs), of Miami (pictured at the left), and James “Shotgun” Winchester (15-5, 5 KOs), of Greensboro, N.C., came after Hernandez shoved Winchester before they were to pose for cameras after they both weighed in.

Their 10-round clash, which will open the telecast, was just added to the televised portion of the event late Wednesday.

No one enjoyed the commotion more than Hall of Fame promoter, Don King.

Both fighters made weight; Hernandez tipped the scale at 156 pounds, Winchester 155¾.

ROBERT GUERRERO: "I'M COMING HARD ON NOVEMBER 24TH...I'M HUNGRY TO SHOW THE WORLD I'M THE BEST"
By Mike Juhas | November 16, 2012

"Berto's punching power that I'm going to be dealing with is nothing new. I just fought one of the biggest punchers in the division in Aydin, so against Berto, I'll have to be quick on my feet to get out of harm's way. I'll be ready for everything he's bringing...I'm coming hard on November 24th and everyone will be witnessing a great fight between me and Berto. I'm hungry to show the world I'm the best welterweight in the world," stated interim WBC welterweight champion Robert Guerrero, who talked about his upcoming November 24 showdown with former welterweight champion Andre Berto. Check it out!

MJ: How is training camp going for you?

RG: Training camp is going great. I'm here in Las Vegas putting in a lot of hard work. Everything is excellent right now.

MJ: Have you needed to adjust your training methods to fight as a welterweight instead of a lightweight?

RG: Yeah, we made some minor changes to my diet, but as far as training, everything is moving forward as usual. My dad is doing a couple of things differently now that we're at welterweight, but not much.

MJ: Berto is a powerful hitting welterweight. How do you prepare for his punching power? Who are you using as sparring partners?

RG: We got some fast guys in camp that I'm sparring with and they're giving me great work. Berto's punching power that I'm going to be dealing with is nothing new. I just fought one of the biggest punchers in the division in Aydin, so against Berto, I'll have to be quick on my feet to get out of harm's way. I'll be ready for everything he's bringing.

MJ: Do you think his speed or power will be more difficult for you in the fight?

RG: It's not just one or the other, but the combination of both his speed and power that's going to be a challenge; but it's one I'm confident I can handle with success. I believe in my ability to counter attack anything he'll be bringing into the ring.

MJ: How do you like fighting at 147?

RG: It's great fighting at welterweight, which is the most desired weight class to be in. I'm very blessed to have the frame to compete at 147. This is the weight where I want to be.

MJ: Do you think winning this fight leads to Floyd next? If not, what do you anticipate being the next step?

RG: Right now, I'm only focusing on beating Berto. I know with a victory against him puts me in a great position to fight anyone in the world.

MJ: Is there anything else you'd like to tell your fans?

RG: I want the fans to know that I'm coming hard on November 24th and everyone will be witnessing a great fight between me and Berto. I'm hungry to show the world I'm the best welterweight in the world and I'm thankful to Golden Boy Promotions and HBO for this opportunity. I want to thank all my fans for their support, and everyone can follow me on twitter G @Ghost boxing and Facebook /ghostfans. Tune in to HBO Championship Boxing on November 24th. Thank you and God bless.

Vanes Martirosyan: “My cut is healing well, but my balls are extremely sore!”
Boxing news published November 14, 2012 | 46 Comments

martirosyan1 boxingBy Joseph Herron: This past Saturday night at the Wynn Las Vegas, former Olympian Vanes Martirosyan (32-0-1, 20 KOs) fought top rated Junior Middleweight contender Erislandy Lara (17-1-2, 11 KOs) to a tactical, nine round technical draw.

Because the fight was deemed by the WBC as an official title eliminator, the inconclusive results will force a rematch at a future designated date and venue. Although many fight fans who witnessed the awkward yet tactical bout aren’t exactly clamoring for an immediate sequel, both fighters have acknowledged a willingness to step in the ring one final time.

On this Sunday night’s edition of “The Pugilist KOrner’s: Weekend Wrap”, Lara’s world renowned trainer, Mr. Ronnie Shields, revealed that the Cuban missile sustained an injury to his right hand in the first round. The famed fight trainer claims that Erislandy’s injured hand drastically affected his punch output within the calculated boxing match.

Vanes Martirosyan had much to say about his former trainer’s commentary.

“Really? Man, his fighter’s just making excuses for his performance,” insists the 2004 Olympian. “Professional fighters don’t make excuses. When he gave me the intentional low blow, you didn’t see me grab my balls and immediately start rolling around on the ground in a poor attempt to get Lara disqualified.”

“Man, that’s just an excuse to try and explain why he decided to run instead of fight me. When a fighter is hurt during a fight, you can barely feel the pain because the adrenaline is rushing through your entire body. You just suck it up and keep fighting. But he wasn’t fighting, he was just running.”

“Did he headbutt me in the ninth because he couldn’t use his right hand?”

The fight was officially halted at the 0:29 mark of round number nine by referee Jay Nady, from the advice of the ringside physician, after Vanes received a huge gash over his left eye that resulted from an incidental headbutt.

The 26 year old contender insists that the cut isn’t what’s currently bothering him.

“The cut over my eye is going to be fine. We’re going to the doctor tomorrow to find out how long it’s going to take to heal. The stitches should be coming out in about four or five more days, but the cut really isn’t what’s bothering me.”

“A much more sensitive area of my body is what’s hurting right now.”

“I’m not going to lie…the day after the fight my balls were hurting from the low blow. The cut’s doing fine, but it’s really sore down there.”

After the controversial ending to the elimination contest, Martirosyan’s Hall of Fame trainer, Mr. Freddie Roach, stated to the various media members in attendance that he believed the low blow in round number four was indeed intentionally thrown by Erislandy Lara.

Vanes supported his trainer’s post fight remarks.

“I definitely believe the low blow wasn’t accidental,” professed Vanes Martirosyan. “You don’t throw a punch like that if you’re genuinely aiming for the body. He was aiming for my cup, and he did a good job. I’m just happy that I had my two kids before this fight!”

“Now that hurt really, really bad! I’m still feeling that shot!”

“I think Lara got frustrated because I was pressing him throughout the entire fight and he really didn’t know how to handle it. I think that’s why he did it. I think me pressuring him all night made him a little crazy and really frustrated him to the point of hitting me down there.”

Freddie Roach also stated that he feels the southbound hook wasn’t the only intentional foul committed by Lara during the bout. The Hall of Fame trainer believes that the fight ending head butt was also deliberate.

Vanes whole heartedly agrees with his veteran trainer.

“Freddie Roach has seen it all in this sport. He’s a smart coach and he’s been around long enough where he knows what’s dirty and what isn’t. Lara purposely hit me low in the fourth and he purposely head butt me in the ninth.”

Although both camps agree that Saturday night’s contest was a little more problematic than they had originally anticipated, the undefeated Junior Middleweight contends that the rematch will be much more entertaining and a lot more conclusive.

“Lara still fights like an amateur and really isn’t who people think he is. That’s one of the reasons why I really wanted this fight. I think a lot of people were surprised that he had so much trouble with me.”

“I’m going to get back in the gym as soon as possible and try to get on the January 19th Top Rank card on HBO. I know a lot people thought that I was avoiding the best fighters at Junior Middleweight, but I’m ready to face the best. I loved fighting under the bright lights and want to get back on HBO. Now I know why fighters come out of retirement because it was a lot of fun to fight on that stage.”

“I’m ready to fight the best in boxing and I will prove it by getting in the ring with anyone at 154, 160, and maybe even 168 pounds.”

“I know I have unfinished business with Lara and I will take care of him as soon as the rematch is set. But I want to stay active…a lot more active than I’ve been. The fight fans are going to see that I’m going to continue to get better and ‘The Nightmare’ is going to continue to get worse for every fighter in the Junior Middleweight division.”

Schaefer Has a Proposal To Arum on Donaire-Mares, Rios

By Rick Reeno

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has made a proposal to Bob Arum, the CEO of Top Rank. Golden Boy is interested in matching WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares against WBO king Nonito Donaire, who Top Rank promotes. Arum is open to doing the fight, but only if Top Rank handles the entire promotion.

Arum recently told BoxingScene's Luis Sandoval that Top Rank has no interest in doing a straight co-promotion with Golden Boy. They are willing, however, to pay Golden Boy a fee for the services of Mares.

“We have no interest in working with Golden Boy. However we will offer them a sum of money for the services of Mares, put them up as a co-promoter but we have no interest doing a regular co-promotion with them,” revealed Arum to BoxingScene.

Schaefer has no issue with Arum's position. But, Golden Boy is only willing to step aside on Donaire-Mares if Top Rank is willing to step aside on a junior welterweight fight between Brandon Rios and Lucas Matthysse. Schaefer is open to negotiating a fair fee for the services of Rios."I saw the interviews and the comments from Top Rank. I have no problems with it. Top Rank can do Mares vs. Doniare and we'll do Mathysse vs. Rios. Bob just needs to tell us how much he needs for Rios....fair is fair. We can agree on both fights at the same time.....no options, no rematches," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.

The two promotional rivals are probably not going to be any closer to making either match. Top Rank is positioning Rios to fight Manny Pacquiao on April 21. If for whatever reason that fight doesn't come off, then Top Rank already has a backup plan with a Rios vs. Mike Alvarado rematch.

In the case of Donaire, there is a growing demand for a fight with Mares. Donaire, should he beat heavy underdog Jorge Arce on December 15, will need another lucrative opponent for 2013. Although talented, Guillermo Rigondeaux's inability to sell tickets makes him "high risk, low reward" proposition. Donaire-Mares is the natural fight that should be made.

There is some discussion about Donaire heading to 126 next year, and whether or not Mares is willing to meet him there is unknown. Mares has no shortage of immediate possibilities, with Leo Santa Cruz, Fernando Montiel and Victor Terrazas chasing him for a shot.

Sounds like a good plan to me.

I'd absolutely love to see Matthysse vs Rios. Rumpelstiltskin is right though, Arum wont do it. Not if he truly is planning on matching pac vs rios in april (which is dissapointing to hear but tbh I don't think pac is getting passed marquez this time around so maybe plans will change).
