Edison Miranda: I'll KILL Arthur Abraham!!

Here is what Edison had to say.

Q. Firstly, with your known weight problems in the past, will the Abraham rematch taking place at 166 pounds affect you at all?

Miranda: I was asked what the lowest weight I was willing to come down to would be for this fight. 166 pounds was the lowest I was willing to go down to. I am really a big super-middleweight, but with the right diet and the time I have [before the fight] I will be able to make this weight and keep my strength. Ideally, I would have liked the fight at 168-170 pounds, but Abraham refused to come up that high. I don't see a problem for me at 166 pounds.

Q. Abraham has said you could not beat him last time, when he had a broken jaw. He also says you fought dirty. How do you respond to this claim?

Miranda: Anyone who has seen me fight knows I am not a dirty fighter. Other than the fight in Germany, I have only ever had one point deducted from me in my whole career. In my first fight with Abraham the referee (Randy Neumann) threatened to disqualify me for legal shots to the body. I had no choice but to change my game-plan. Also, the head butt for which I was deducted points, came about simply because I was trying to work myself free from a clinch. I became frustrated in the fight, yes, but I am not a dirty fighter. In fact, if anyone was a dirty fighter in Germany it was Abraham. How many times did he hold me and rabbit punch me? He would even hold the ropes with me trapped between his arms! It was unreal, I cannot believe the stuff he was allowed to get away with. I tell you this, though, I am going to kill the guy this time!

Q. Before we get to fight two, do you still feel you won the first fight with Abraham?

Miranda: Yes. I actually feel I won the fight twice. I won in the 5th round (when a long time-out was called and it seemed as though the champion could not carry on due to his busted jaw) and I won on points also. That fight was just a robbery. I was robbed in Germany! (the official scores were 116-109, 115-109 and 114-109 - all for Abraham)

Q. So how will you win this time?

Miranda: Like I say, I'm going to kill him! There is nobody that is going to stop me from doing this. I have been waiting for this rematch to happen ever since the day I left Germany. Abraham is a fool for getting back in the ring with me. I will make him pay for pretending to be a champion after I destroyed him the first time. I will not let up until he is beaten. I want him to feel pain!

Q. What are Abraham's strengths as a fighter?

Miranda: His only strength is that he fights in his own country of Germany. He is a crap fighter anywhere else and I will expose this for the whole world to see come June 21st. I do not think he is a good boxer at all, or a real champion.

Q. So what type of fight are you expecting? It clearly sounds as though you think it will be brutal?

Miranda: It will be hide and seek. He will try and run from me. But the ring is only so large, and there are only four corners [for him] to run to. I will hunt him down like a wounded pig and slaughter him. The referee, whoever it is, better be ready to jump in before he gets too badly hurt. In Germany, I felt bad for him with every punch. His face looked horrible and he was bleeding non-stop. But now I want him to feel the pain again. The last fight will look like it was written by Walt Disney compared to what I plan on doing to him in this fight!

Q. Let's just talk briefly about your great, but losing fight with Kelly Palvlik. Was it your weight problems that led to your loss?

Miranda: Without a doubt. Kelly Pavlik is a great fighter, but I had to lose 47 pounds in less than six weeks for that fight. That nearly killed me! Making middleweight was always difficult for me, but I really wanted to fight Jermain Taylor bad. I am a much better fighter up at 168 pounds, and a much bigger puncher - just ask David Banks (3rd round KO victim in Miranda's last fight, in January of this year) if you can wake him up that is!

Q. Aside from putting on weight since the loss to Pavlik, what other changes have you made to your game?

Miranda: I've been working very hard on my movement and on my defence in the ring. I really believe that if I'd been able to have avoided some of Pavlik's punches I'd have still been in the fight. Honestly, I am a much better fighter now, as a super-middleweight.

Q. You almost had a fight signed with Mikkell Kessler. How annoyed were you that that fight never came off?

Miranda: I still think that fight will happen. I plan on getting to Kessler next. But after he sees what I do to Abraham I doubt he will want to sign the contract. Both fights [Kessler and Abraham] are great fights, but for different reasons. I had to jump on this opportunity to fight Abraham again now, while he is stupid enough to step in the ring with me. I knew I may not get this chance again.

Q. You're clearly pumped up for June 21st already. Do you have a final prediction?

Miranda: I am in shape already. There will be no shortcuts with the training for this fight. I will say this in closing; put your children to bed early, because I do not want them to see what my fists are capable of doing. The last time we fought, Abraham left the dressing room on a stretcher. This time he will not be so lucky. This time the stretcher better be waiting for him in his corner!

Like his style and attitude or not, Edison Miranda is a fighter who is not afraid to speak his mind!

Guzman wasting no time!!!!

Joan Guzman: "Nate Campbell is Perfect For Me"

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Now that Joan Guzman has vacated his WBO 130 pound title, the undefeated Dominican-born speedster is looking for a challenge at the lightweight level.

"I think Nate Campbell would be a perfect opponent for me," said Guzman, who is a two-division champion with a record of 28-0 with 17 knockouts. "Nobody wants to fight Nate at 135 pounds and no one wants to fight me at 130 pounds. So let's just fight each other."

"The WBO has assured Sycuan that Guzman will in fact become the number one contender at 135 pounds," said Sean Gibbons, matchmaker for Sycuan Ringside Promotions.

"Twenty-eight boxers have tried to beat me and they all failed miserably. Nate will be number twenty-nine if he has the guts and courage to fight me.

"i'm ready to fight Nate anytime, any place, anywhere. A lot of boxers are afraid of me, but I sure hope Nate isn't one of them."

Cotto to face Margarito on July 26 at MGM Grand in Vegas

From Espn.com

Welterweight titleholder Miguel Cotto will face Antonio Margarito on July 26 in an HBO PPV bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas now that both have signed for the much-anticipated fight, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told ESPN.com on Thursday.

"I get really excited about a fight like this because I know it can't be anything but great," Arum said. "That's why we're calling it 'The Battle.' It's a tough-ass fight. Two real men fighting. There won't be any playing around. No ducking or dodging. These are two guys who will go at it. That is their style. And don't forget the element that it is Mexico vs. Puerto Rico, which is the great rivalry in boxing."

The fight matching two of boxing's most exciting fighters has been on track since April 12, when they both knocked out opponents on the same card.

Cotto (32-0, 26 KOs), of Puerto Rico, stopped "Contender" star Alfonso Gomez in the fifth round to retain his 147-pound belt for the fourth time and Margarito blew out Kermit Cintron via sixth-round knockout in a rematch.

"These guys both have great chins, great determination and great power," Arum said. "It's going to be some battle. I just hope that they are not ruined from a fight like this."

Mexico's Margarito (36-5, 26 KOs) won a world title from Cintron, but he will relinquish it in order to face Cotto rather than fight Joshua Clottey in a far less lucrative mandatory match. Arum said Margarito would officially renounce his title "within the next week."

Before Margarito, 30, defeated Cintron, he had already agreed to terms for the Cotto fight as long as they both won on April 12, Arum said. Cotto, 27, was also committed to the fight, but did not sign until Wednesday night, Arum said.

"Margarito signed off before his fight with Cintron," Arum said. "Cotto wanted the fight but we were going over terms and minutia, and finally Miguel and his team agreed on everything last night."

Arum would not divulge their purses, which will eventually be public when the contracts are filed with the Nevada State Athletic Commission. However, Arum said each would receive "by far the biggest purse they have ever gotten." Besides the purse, each fighter will receive a percentage of the profits from the pay-per-view revenue.

Cotto's biggest purse was $3.2 million for his November victory against Shane Mosley. Margarito earned a $1.2 million purse when he lost a version of the title to Paul Williams last summer.

The fight will officially be announced during a four-city media blitz next week. They'll kick off the promotion with a news conference Monday in Mexico City followed by a stop Tuesday in Los Angeles, Thursday in New York and Friday in San Juan.

The fight will mark Cotto's first bout in Las Vegas since he knocked out Randall Bailey in a junior welterweight title defense on the December 2004 undercard of the Vitali Klitschko-Danny Williams heavyweight fight.

Since then, Cotto has fought either in Puerto Rico, New York or Atlantic City, N.J. Arum said he felt it was important to establish Cotto on the West Coast, where Margarito has a following.

"Based on Cotto's fights with Zab Judah and Mosley, he has established a good East Coast base on pay-per-view," Arum said. "We felt his base would be loyal and we needed a big West Coast presence. We think the great Mexican fans will come out for Margarito, so it made sense to do the fight in the West rather than the East. We couldn't do it in Las Vegas until they changed the rule on the gloves."

A few weeks ago, the Nevada commission amended its rule on glove size. It had in place a provisional rule that mandated welterweights wear 10-ounce gloves rather than the traditional 8-ounce gloves worn in virtually every other jurisdiction in the world. Cotto and Margarito both prefer the 8-ounce gloves and Arum refused to put the fight on in Nevada until the temporary rule, which was up for review, was changed.

Arum said he has not set the undercard yet but said he wanted to include rising junior welterweight contender Mike Alvarado on the card.

"Alvarado is one guy I really want on the card in a good fight," Arum said. "After that, we're open. I'll be discussing it with my matchmakers."

Dan Rafael covers boxing for ESPN

ESPN.COm says Margo vs. cotto is official, Anybody know how much tickets would b at MGM grand???? I'm going without question, Cotto NEVER comes out this way. If anyone can help me get an estimate, i got to start counting my pennies. I know tickets wont go on sale for awhile but, anyone have any idea how much Hatton vs. Mayweather was for some decent seats????

I read the range is 1000, $750, $600 and $150, does that sound right??

Roy Jones: "After Calzaghe, I Want Chris Byrd

By Mark Vester

Former four-division champ Roy Jones Jr. is already peaking interest in the newest arrival to the light heavyweight ranks, former two-time heavyweight champion Chris Byrd.

Jones is currently in negotiations to land a fight with Joe Calzaghe for November. After Calzaghe, Jones will be looking at Byrd as his possible next opponent. He tells boxing scribe Tim Smith that Byrd is a great addition to the light heavyweight ranks.

"It's a beautiful thing," Jones said. "Once I get through with Joe Calzaghe, I'll definitely be looking at Chris Byrd. It would be the first time in history that two former heavyweight champions fight at light heavyweight. He's definitely going to add some excitement to the division."

Byrd has been a heavyweight since 1994, and has not fought at the light heavyweight level since 1993. He makes his grand return to 175 on Friday night when he takes on Shaun George at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.

that don't mean he aint going to beat Abraham. Pavlik KO's Abraham too in my book.
I thought Miranda should've earned the decision the first fight but in reality he couldn't finish off a broken jawed and battered Abraham the first fight I don't see him doing it this fight. Mirandas David Banks crippling one punch knockout has never shown its face in a fight that means anything.

I do think Miranda will win though .. was just pointing out that that's always what he says.

Miranda is like Mayorga, he talks shit about everyone. And to me it's funny/entertaining. That's just Miranda though, that's what he does.

Not being able to finish off Abraham with a broken jaw says two things: 1). Abraham does have a pretty good chin and 2). Abraham was protected. The fight should have been stopped when Abraham said he didn't want to continue fighting. In America, he won't have that protection. Now, Abraham may have stepped up his game since then, I don't know, but if that particular fight happened in the US and not Germany, Miranda wins that fight probably by stoppage.

And Miranda not being able to KO opponents when it means something I think is a bit harsh. He didn't do it against Abraham (but did break his jaw) or against Pavlik, who lets face it, is just a better fighter then Miranda. Other than that there was Allen Green, who Miranda dominated and knocked down twice in the final round.

I like Miranda, dude is exciting and goes out there to destroy people whether he does it or not. Breaking Abrahams jaw was great and Abraham did get an extremely lucky break because they were in Germany, but if you rewatch without looking at the foul filled bullshit he also boxed extremely well while moving backwards against Miranda.

I do give Miranda props for stopping Howard Eastman, who's been in there with punches and was never stopped before or after Miranda. Abraham has looked good recently even though it hasn't been against the greatest (even though I think he beat Demers after Miranda.) Miranda on the other hand looked extremely tentative against Porras and even against David Banks before he blew his face off.

I'm not hating on Miranda, I just don't think he can put away an A level fighter. I'll be the first to admit I'm wrong if the blows Abraham out the water.

I know what your sayin, and mostly I agree. I don't think Miranda is an elite fighter. But neither is Abraham from what I've seen and I think Miranda has this one in the bag. Against Pavlik, or someone as good as Pavlik or maybe someone even like Kessler (since he's at the top of super middle besides Calfaggy), Miranda wont win because he's not that good of a boxer. But he'll beat the rest, just not the best.

Abraham is a very protected fighter. Never stepped foot outside of Germany. Miranda was his biggest win by far, other than him, he's beat no one. Howard Eastman was a good win, but from what I read that was a controversial decision.

Here are a few reasons: 5 point deduction, referee protecting abraham (like in the first round for example moving miranda off of abraham after miranda lands perfect body shots). Doctor/commissioner/whoever-the-fuck giving Abraham almost 10 minutes to rest after the broken jaw. Referee/commissioner instructing Abraham not to quit, even though abraham clearly stated he didn't want to continue fighting. Judges.

Yuriorkis Gamboa interview

Yuriorkis, tell us a little bit about your Olympic experience in 2004.

Well I remember everything about the Olympics. Remember, to become an Olympic champion isn’t a one-year job. It’s 4 grueling years of training.

It was reported on television that you fought over 400 amateur fights.

Actually I fought 425 fights.

That’s incredible. Who has given you your toughest fight as an amateur or pro?

Well I had two really tough fights. Those fights came when I was in the Olympic Games. I hit them with everything and I just couldn’t hurt them.

You’ve been a pro for little over a year and have fought less than 25 rounds as a pro. You are already ranked #5 in the world. Are you happy with how your career is moving, or do you think everything is happening too fast?

Actually I’m quite pleased with how my career is going. Nothing has happened that wasn’t expected of me. I was the top amateur in the world, and I’ve taken the leap into the pro ranks where I also plan on being the best. Plus, I don’t care how many fights my opponents have, bring ‘em on.

In the USA the people really look at pro fights and maybe overlook their amateur experience. Like for me someone might say that I only have 5 or 6 fights and this guy has 15 or 20 so that’s not a good fight. It’s a bad match-up. But it really doesn’t matter to me.

So you feel that your amateur experience makes up for any difference?

Absolutely! I feel like a fighter who’s had 15-20 fights.

OK. So how long do you think you need before you fight for a world title?

I’m not sure of the exact time. I’m already making the right moves to put myself in a position for a world title shot. Truthfully I’m ready to take on any fighter of any level of experience. I’m ready to go 10 or 12 rounds limit. Just because I have only a few fights doesn’t mean I prepare myself like a fighter at the bottom. I train hard and prepare myself completely. I’m training to become a world champion. I train like a champion. With my preparation I know when the time comes I’ll be 100% ready and I will achieve my goal.

This fight is going to be on HBO and televised around the world. Do you feel pressure, like you have to KO Jimenez to look good for the fans and the network?

Not at all. I feel no pressure. To me this is just another fight like any other. How much more pressure can there be compared to the pressure of fighting for the gold medal in the Olympics? And even in the Olympics I didn’t feel the pressure. So I have that part under control. What makes me happy is that I’m going to be on HBO. I don’t have that many fights under my belt yet I got the chance. It’ something that doesn’t happy very often so I’m pleased. But pressure, I don’t see why? This is where I’m supposed to be. This is where God put me, so I’m 100% ready.

What do you know about your opponent, Darling Jimenez? Is he fast? Is he strong?

We’ve watched some footage and have analyzed him. He’s a fighter that likes to work with the left hook. He works well with the left. But he’s not a fighter with tremendous hand speed or really anything out of the ordinary. Basically he’s just another fighter.

So he’s average?

Absolutely. He doesn’t bring anything to the table that I can’t overcome with my abilities. The fights that are hard are when you fight an opponent with unbelievable speed or extraordinary power. Then it becomes harder to overcome. Jimenez is a good fighter, but there is nothing extraordinary about him. So we should have no problems.

When I’ve seen you in the corner you look incredibly confident. What’s going through your mind before a fight?

I always 100% mentally prepared for a fight. When I’m in the ring I’m thinking about the guy’s height, and what adjustments will I need to make in there. As the fight progresses are start analyzing his weakness and his strong points. What are his best punches, what mistakes he’s making that I can capitalize on, and then I move in for the kill

Give me your opinion on these fighters.

* Edwin Valero

I know about him, but honestly I’ve never seen any of his fights.

That’s understandable. Here is another name:

* Joan Guzman

I’ve seen Guzman, but only once and I wasn’t really even watching. He was in Columbia fighting and I happen to be there. But I didn’t see enough of him to give you an honest opinion.

* Manny Pacquiao

I got to see all of his last fight. Truthfully I haven’t had an opportunity to watch many fighters. I know that he’s been mentioned as one of the top fighters in the world, and I did get a chance to watch his last fight and study him?

So what do you think?

Well let me just say that I find it impressive and yet surprising that he’s been mentioned as one of the best fighters for such a long time. I studied him and the only thing he really has is punching power. We’d have to both get in the ring so you can see the difference. But when it comes to boxing ability and strategy, I really didn’t see much.

So he’s a pretty basic fighter in your opinion?

Well he’s very combative. But Pacquiao isn’t really a quality fighter. Aside from his willingness to fight I have to say he’s nothing special.

What are you plans for 2008?

Well that’s really up to my promoter. I’m ready to fight anybody. My job is to stay undefeated and to always be ready for a fight. My promoter’s job is to eventually get me a title shot. So I’ll keep working hard and I’ll be ready when the title shot comes.

Who is your favorite fighter to watch?

I’m going to be really honest with you. When it comes to professional boxing I really haven’t seen that many fighters. In Cuba we didn’t have that many opportunities to watch boxing. When we did watch it was mainly the heavyweights. My favorite fighter was Mike Tyson. I loved his aggressiveness. He had amazing power and tremendous speed. You see, this is what I was talking to you about earlier. It’s really hard to overcome someone who has that natural talent. Tyson was just naturally a gifted athlete and he was always impressive to watch.

Yuriorkis, you are also a fighter with amazing hand speed, foot speed, and power, but what do you think you need to work on?

Well though my years as an amateur and as a pro I’ve done very well—but I have to admit that recently we have started to work on keeping my hands up. Sometimes I keep my hands around my waist. It’s a bad habit that I’ve had since a child. I guess that’s what makes it hard to get rid of, because I’ve been doing it for so many years. But I will overcome those errors and we are working on these problems that my team has archived and I keep getting better.

Do you think part of the reason why you keep your hand so low is because of your hand speed? You feel fast enough to counter whatever your opponents are doing that you feel safe?

Absolutely. My hand speed is what makes it possible for me to keep my hands low. I’m able to get my punches off first and then get them back in time to protect myself. My opponents haven’t been able to deal with my speed. I let my punches go, and I also move out of the way with my feet so there isn’t a target to punch. It is something that I have been doing for many years, but like I said, we continue to work on correcting any errors in the gym.

Yuriorkis, you’ve really been impressive in all of your fights and everyone is very excited to see you in action again. How about a message for all of your fans?

Well I’m happy that my fans will finally be able to see my on HBO. I know a lot of people just read about me, or a friend told them about me. Well finally, here is your chance to see me in action. I’m fired up and I promise you that my debut on HBO will be the most impressive debut ever. Tune in to see me Saturday, YOU WON’T WANT TO MISS IT.
