That would mean @Erick sonHammerL vs. @VanesBoxing, not that WBC has final say. Both with PBC though...

Great fight!

After months of negotiations and the threat of a purse bid looming Monday, representatives for unified middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin and secondary titlist (and mandatory challenger) Daniel Jacobs said Saturday they have made a deal for the fight that will match the top two 160-pounders in the world.

The bout is slated for March 18 at Madison Square Garden in New York, and will be televised on HBO PPV, Golovkin said.

Later Saturday, Golovkin met with reporters for lunch to discuss the fight.

"It's big news for me. I am very excited," he said. "I think it's a very big fight and great fight for you guys to watch. Danny is an amazing fighter. He is a tough opponent and No. 2 in the middleweight division. He is my toughest opponent. Hopefully, I fight three times next year. There are big plans for 2017 (but) right now I am focused on Jacobs and I am here to fight."

Although the fight most boxing fans want to see is Golovkin against Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez -- a bout in the works for September -- both need to win intervening fights, and a Golovkin-Jacobs match is a significant one.

"I'm excited about facing GGG and proving I'm the best middleweight in the world," Jacobs said in a statement to ESPN. "On March 18 I'm bringing all the belts back to Brooklyn with me."

K2 Promoter Tom Loeffler, who represents GGG, and Al Haymon, adviser to Jacobs, have been working on making this fight since September, when both fighters scored knockout wins one day apart. In his fourth defense, Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) knocked out Sergio Mora in the seventh round of their rematch Sept. 9. Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) stopped Kell Brook in the fifth round Sept. 10, to retain his title for the 17th time as he scored his 23rd knockout in a row.

But talks moved very slowly and it looked as though the fight might go to a purse bid. Had that happened, Golovkin, a Kazakhstan native based in Santa Monica, California, would have been entitled to 75 percent of the winning bid and Jacobs would have received the remaining 25 percent.

Although terms of the March fight were not disclosed, Jacobs certainly will get a much bigger slice of the pie than 25 percent by making a deal, but the fight will stay with HBO, which has Golovkin under exclusive contract.

The 34-year-old Golovkin also has deep ties to Madison Square Garden as opposed to Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where Jacobs, 29, is the face of the boxing franchise for the arena in his borough.

Golovkin-Jacobs took so long to negotiate that in mid-October the sides gave up a proposed Dec. 10 date for the fight and agreed to try to make the deal for early 2017.

#1 vs #2 middleweights. Should be a fun fight. Jacobs is fast and has a lot of power, so it will be interesting to see if he can hurt Gennady or not.

I'm sure Jacobs is getting a good payday too, which is why it's on PPV. Too many PPVs this year but this one is worth it, anytime you get the #1 vs #2 that's a good thing, plus Jacobs had 12 KOs in a row and Gennady has 20-something in a row, guaranteed action.

great fight, but I hope the undercard is good, otherwise it might not be a success. Think they can afford to put in Chocolatito/Cuadras II in? Either way, im buying.

As much as I'd like to see him get paid the reality is these little dudes don't make a lot of money. In recent times the biggest money maker was nonito donaire and he was at 118-122 pounds, with a ton of buzz after his KO of Darchinyan and capitalizing off the Filipino Pacquiao craze at the time. Likewise, Lomachenko has earned $1 million recently and he's at 126 now. Gonzalez fighting from 105 to 112, it's pretty small and he's probably tapped out where he is, maybe he can go a little higher but he's 5'3, he doesn't have the height or body frame to go any higher realistically.

Outside of Donaire and Lomachenko, I just haven't seen guys smaller then them make million dollar paydays. It's not impossible, Roman is a very special fighter, his combinations are the cleanest I've seen in the sport, but if he's not creating a huge buzz by now like Donaire was at his peak or Lomachenko is right now then it's probably not going to happen, not unless it's very special circumstances. For whatever reasons these small weight classes have never drawn big numbers historically, there are exceptions of course but a lot of things need to be aligned properly. Roman isn't even headlining his own shows, his last four fights in a row have been on Golovkin undercards, a strategy to piggyback off Golovkins success to get Roman more exposure in the US market. Which has absolutely helped his career but not to the point where he's not enough to headline shows here on a regular basis and make million dollar paydays.

It would be better to accept that reality and fight the best focusing on his legacy, he's a remarkable fighter and I'd hate to see good fights he could make not happen because he wants big paydays that just isn't going to come, as unfair as it may be that's the reality of the small weight classes (it also happens at cruiserweight where guys aren't making a ton of money sandwiched between Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight but everyone fights everyone as a result).

$500K isn't being unreasonable though considering he made 400K to fight Cuadras and every HBO fight he's been going up gradually.

I think it was different when he was asking for a million to rematch Estrada when he hadn't even fought on HBO at that point but $500K with a few HBO fights under his belt and getting paid right around there anyway is fine.

And just to add to the above, Darchinyan got up to $1M purses when he was fighting on Showtime leading up to getting crushed by Donaire.

The money is definitely there especially if he unifys with Inoue. HBO + Japanese TV money it's almost a guarantee they'd both hit close to $1M a piece. It'd likely end up being the biggest small man fight (financially) since Gonzalez/Carbajal.

You see, Canelo doesn't need GGG for shit! He's moving up in weight class and make a statement. JCC Jr is going to get KO'd and GGG will get KO'd vs Jacobs and then Canelo will drop Jacobs come September! This year is gonna be the shit!
