It's rare but I fully side with the WBC here.

I also should say regarding the sanctioning fees, not the step aside money, it is necessary and it's in the interest of the sport. Sure, we can argue on how much is too much, the percentages and all that, but at the end of the day the WBC does put money back into the sport, and that's the point. They put money into amateur programs, they help retired fighters with medical bills, etc etc. The great advantage the UFC has is that all the money they generate goes right back into building the sport. People forget that when it comes to sanctioning fees for boxing. It's necessary. Now, of course it doesn't help matters when the sanctioning body is completely corrupt and incompetent like the WBA, and the WBC isn't that much better, but they put back more into the sport then any other sanctioning body.

Dan Rafael chat wrap 11/20:

Canelo vs. Cotto:
- Cotto is more experienced, but Canelo is experienced as well. Cotto won't win this fight off of experience.
- A Cotto win puts in into the 2 or 3 greatest Puerto Rican fighters ever.
- Believes Canelo will make weight because he is a professional who respects boxing and its fans (he did make weight).
- Buzz is building, but wasn't good on Wednesday and the press conference was horrible. Thursday was a bit better.
- Not sure if it will be a Canelo or Cotto crowd. The fact the fight is not in NY lead him to believe it will be a Canelo crowd.
- Undercard picks: Muira, Rigo, Velez, and Caballero.
- Canelo by late KO. First half of the fight will be even, the second half Canelo will take over and start to bust Canelo up. Thinks it will be like Pacquiao-Cotto.
- Cotto looks better lately because Roach has helped him, but also great matchmaking.
- Mexico vs. Puerto Rico is the best rivalry in boxing.
- Rigo was tweeting for fans to come and say hi and visit with him. He was helping kids get out of the ring.
- Will Canelo fight GGG next if he wins? 100% no.
- 50 Cent did a better job promoting than Jay Z. At least 50 showed up to the weigh-ins, press conferences, did media requests, and talked up his fighters.
- ODH has been doing a great job promoting this fight. Gives him an A+ in his promotional efforts. Jay Z gets an F.
- It doesn't help that Canelo and Cotto are not good at promoting the fight either. Both do not talk much and have been bad interviews.
- Could the winner get Floyd to come out of retirement to fight them? Wouldn't be surprised.
- Floyd will not be at the fight.
- Told that GGG will still get the 800k step aside money. The WBC is not involved at all in the step aside agreement. They just have to be notified that both parties agreed and that Cotto's next fight will be against his mandatory (assuming he is champion).
- Cotto offered to pay the WBC $125k, they said no. The WBC wanted $300k. Word is Cotto may still be trying to negotiate to keep his title and retain his current PPV revenue percentage.
- Cotto got an added percentage for the PPV split because he was champion and now he is not. The way the contract is negotiated, GB and RNS will have to revisit how the PPV split will be decided. That will be interesting!
- Cotto's purse is $15 million and Canelo's is $5 million, plus more on the PPV buy upside. Canelo is also likely getting additional upside with Mexican TV revenue.
- Cotto is not paying the $300k because he thinks it is too much. He is not trying to get out of a GGG fight.
- Does the WBC have a bias for Mexican fighters? Does a fish have a bias for water?
- Overall PPV card grade? B+.
- Freddie Roach's back is really bad. He is going to therapy, but he may have to have surgery after the fight.
- Cotto's biggest win? Mosley and Martinez.
- Referee will be Robert Byrd. Judges are: John McKaie, Dave Moretti, and Burt Clements.
- Favorite fights between Mexico-Puerto Rico: Sanchez-Gomez, Trinidad-Vargas, and Cotto-Margarito 2.
- Foreman was the lineal champ without a title belt after he was stripped following the KO of Moorer.
- With Cotto stripped of the WBC belt, if he wins the belt will be given to GGG.
- People involved in the promotion are a bit worried that the PPV will not get enough buys to turn a profit. He has heard they need to crack 1 million buys to break even.
- Believes that the disappointment surrounding Mayweather-Pacquiao absolutely has and will hurt PPV sales.
- Canelo understands everything you say in English, he is reluctant to speak it.
- Tickets were massively overpriced and the secondary market has had plenty of tickets available. There are also some tickets suddenly available through Mandalay Bay.
- A Canelo loss is very damaging to GB as a promotional company. He is their only serious money making fighter right now.
- Fight night weight? Cotto around 160 and Canelo at about 170.
- Canelo trained for 14 weeks. Feels that is entirely too long.
- The canvas will be a black Roc Nation logoed canvas that Cotto wanted.
- Was excited for Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, but knew it probably would not be an exciting fight. Is more excited for this fight and thinks it will be more entertaining.
- Cotto not fighting at a true 160 lb weight limit does not hurt his legacy.
- As far as he can tell Hopkins and ODH are friends. Hopkins showed ODH a lot of loyalty and it meant a lot to ODH.

The rest of boxing:
- Holm beating Rousey, isn't even in the same league as Douglas beating Tyson.
- Klitschko will beat Fury handily.
- Glazkov is not officially Wilder's next opponents. They are working through contracts.
- Sadam Ali will be back the first part of next year facing Bradley or Jessie Vargas for the vacant belt.
- Tells ODH to quit BS'ing all the time.
- Since the winner of this fight is unlikely to fight GGG next, the most likely next opponent for GGG will be his mandatory Tureano Johnson or the Lee-Saunders winner.
- Rigo vs. Loma? We will see. Rigo is saying he wants to stay at 122 and also saying $1.2 million isn't enough. That is called pricing yourself out.
- Has heard the rumors of Garcia vs. Guerrero. Does not care for that fight.
- Frontrunner(s) for Pacquiao's next fight? Crawford, Khan, and Bradley. Personally not interesting in seeing Pacquiao-Bradley 3.
- Picking Abraham to beat Murray.
- Soliman was supposed to fight N'Dam, but he declined the fight.
- GGG going to the Cowboys game was partially inspired by the fact GGG would like to fight in Texas and Jerry Jones would like the fight to be at Cowboys Stadium.
- Why don't some fighters get on the day of the fight scale offered showed in network graphics? The scale is there for them to be weighed on when they arrive at the arena, however it isn't contractually obligated, so it is the fighter's choice if they want to be weighed.
- Freddie Roach told him he thinks he can help Pascal, but that a fight vs. Kovalev will be tough.
- Ward's knee injury is not an "injury". It is inflammation.
- Greatest female boxer? Laila Ali.
- Score for Lewis vs. Mercer? 96-94 Lewis.
- Ward's contract with HBO says he cannot fight anyone other than Kovalev after June 2016. He was supposed to have two fights in between, but he may only have time for one.

WBA president Gilberto Jesus Mendoza has criticised the WBC for stripping lineal champion Miguel Cotto of his middleweight title earlier this week.

Cotto takes on Canelo Alvarez at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on Saturday in arguably the biggest non-Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight of the last few years.

He was stripped of his WBC championship after reportedly refusing to pay the $300,000 sanctioning fee to have the title on the line for the fight, per ESPN's Dan Rafael.

There is now a suspicion that the 35-year-old Puerto Rican may not pay the required $800,000 step-aside fee to WBC mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin, as the title is no longer at stake against Alvarez, per Lance Pugmire of the LA Times.

The situation has become very murky, and Mendoza is unimpressed with the way the WBC went about dealing with it, per ESPN Deportes (via Miguel Rivera of Boxing Scene):

I think we are going to be seeing more big name boxers making these decisions. My intention is not to criticise what the Council did or did not, but the decision was a little off. I do not agree with the decision that was made. They should have found a solution, perhaps after the fight. Cotto for me is a serious person who has nothing to hide. But I also wonder what and who was involved in the step aside agreement. I think that the WBC did not handle it well and that is my feeling and I will let [WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman] know at our next meeting.

To me all of this seems a bit unethical, and I know Miguel respected world titles. As sanctioning bodies, we can not get into private agreements. Doing so will detract the public.

The title situation for Saturday's fight has now become very complicated. Should Mexico's Alvarez, 25, win, he will take the WBC title, but Golovkin will become WBC champion if Cotto wins, per Matt Christie of Boxing News.

It is still set to be a tremendous fight and the winner will likely then take on WBA and IBF champion Golovkin either way.

Both Cotto and Alvarez said they were fully prepared in the final press conference before the huge clash:
