Okay here is what I think from a marketing stand point...and some of you with more knowledge about boxing can feel free to correct any missteps on my factual information but Bob Arum is a fuckin idiot. He has the chance to take a piece off the Mayweather hype machine...but what does he do...shoots himself in the foot by denouncing and trouncing Rigondeaux the closet thing to Floyd Mayweather, cause Adrien Broner ain't it. HBO follows suit with Arum and doesn't want to put on his next fight. Now I know Rigo doesn't speak English...he doesn't have the charisma of Floyd...and is not a young pup...but shit at least use some marketing guile and pit him as the new improved Mayweather 2.0 and take some aspect of similarity between the two fighters and try to make it work. Let's take Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Shaefer with his cheesy ass smile...at least he boasts that Lucas Matthysse is the NEW Manny Pacquiao...and when he said it...the boxing world lasered in on the comparison and Shaefer made good with snatching a piece of the hype from Pacquiao's star power. This old fart Arum talks bad about his promoted fighters then has to sell them to the public after he has shown his ass...see Timothy Bradley. Maybe a problem with Rigo is he has no one to fight after Nonito Donair. I will say this in contrast to my opinion...maybe Arum is sending messages through the media like Bill Parcells when he was coaching in the NFL. Bradley all of a sudden came out swinging and almost got Pacquiao'd by Ruslan Provodnikov.

Actually man its golden boy too. Richard Schaefer said after Lara beat Angulo that he's going to have a hard time promoting him. Both GB and TR feel like Cubans have no fanbase and aren't marketable. Lara should have fought Canelo, we all know that, but instead Lara had to go through like 10 "title eliminators" and he still never got the title shot!

Bob Arum is heavy on race/nationalities. He loves to promote, and does great, with Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Filipinos, etc. He has no idea how to promote Cubans though, neither does golden boy.

HBO never said they wouldn't televise Rigondeaux. The problem is that since Rigo beat Donaire there is no one worth a damn at 122 pounds and he wont move up in weight. Rigo made $750,000 against Donaire and he wants similar or half a mil type paydays but at 122 pounds there just aren't any names to justify that kind of purse, at the moment.

Also, unfortunately Cubans in Florida suck. They do not support boxers, not.like in Cuba where boxing is big. The Cubans in Florida are horrible sports fans that barely even support local cuban baseball players. So unfortunately Cubans in reality have no real fanebase. The most successful and popular one over the years was Casamayor which isn't saying a lot.

Also, casual fans in general suck and are too uneducated and stupid to appreciate the amazing skills Rigondeaux has. This generation wants 2-3 round KOs, they cant sit still through a 12 round boxing masterpiece. Even Mayweather gets shitted on...look at all thr negative comments after Guerro. But Mayweather is so outlandish, outspoken, etc, that people tune in love or hate him. Rigondeaux not being able to speak English does in fact isolate him s bit, which is a shame he has quite the personality it's unfortunate people don't get to see it.

2-0-Sixx @2-0-Sixx I agree with everything you said but the last part. I think casual fans don't mind 12 rounders as long as they all end the way Rigo's fight ended but they don't. Shit, everyone is still talking about this fight like it was yesterday yet it's not considered fight of the year? And I think where promoters are fucking up at is by this whole Mayweather trending shit about "Mexicans and blacks are the dominant ones in boxing" crap. GGG is getting a fanbase no one is expecting, grant it he is KO'ing fools left and right, but I can't even understand his ass. they need to just start promoting really good fights and fighters, not build fighters cuz "they are good fighters that are from this race."

Well that's HBOs philosophy for the most part - buy competitive, good fights. That's why they recently turned down Andre Ward's planned tune up fight. And that's why they have Geale.vs Barker and Kovalev vs Cleverly tomorrow. Competitive, good fights despite all four being foreign fighters.

For better or worse boxing is very nationalistic. If Rigondeaux was Mexican or Puerto Rican he'd be a god.

Knock out artists transcend that shit though, which is why guys like Golovkin, Matthysse and not long ago Edwin Valero get a huge amount of hype.

In reality, there's not THAT many Cubans living in the U.S. compared to other races. They often don't have a fan friendly style, they usually don't speak English etc... It IS harder to promote a Cuban boxer. Hardcore fans still enjoy them, but that also kinda shows how many die hard boxing fans there are. I think Joel Casamayor was one of the most skilled fighters in his era during his prime and loved watching him fight. A lot of people nowadays probably don't even know who he is unless they are a die hard fan.
