Charlie Ahearn was the creator of the first hip hop movie motion picture “Wildstyle” made in 1983. We spoke in his interview, he has been living in NYC since 1973, he made a film on 16 mm to get their reaction and set up a dialogue & doing behind the scenes with people on Martial Arts films. How it all began for Ahearn was hearing “James Brown” music Soul Power being repeated by a DJ, with a line of guys in the Alfred E Smith Projects who were UpRocking which he shot them doing this which got him inspired.
In his screening room a audience from a Martial Arts school wanted to make a movie with him called The Deadly Art of Survival.
Charlie Ahearn was heavily around 1st generation Graffiti culture from the Walls & Subway yards, where he got to meet Lee Quiñones on a super 8 camera “8mm”which was a legendary graff artist who starred in the film “Wildstyle” The rest was history from speaking on Fab 5 Freddy, Grandwizard Theodore, Grandmaster Caz and The Treacherous Three, This is all 1st generation hip hop culture pre 80’s era.
