"Left Eye" Lopes. In the days leading up to her tragic death on April 25,
2002, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes was on a spiritual retreat in Honduras. She had
gone to her home away from home in order to distance herself from her
problems, escape the chaos of the media and to face her inner demons. With
the aid of a video camera and the support from those closest to her, she
documented what would become her final days in journals and private home
movies.
Often viewed by the media as outspoken and controversial, Lisa "Left
Eye" Lopes is posthumously given the opportunity to silence her critics and
set the record straight in VH1's newest Rock Doc, "Last Days of Left Eye."
Produced and directed by Academy Award nominee Lauren Lazin, "Last Days of
Left Eye" is filled with exclusive and never before seen footage all
captured in the final month of Lisa's life. With the full support and
cooperation of the Lopes family, VH1 was granted unprecedented access to
Lisa's film archive and most private journals. What emerges is an intimate
and surprising journey into the soul of a beautiful, talented and
still-provocative artist. "Last Days of Left Eye" premieres Saturday, May
19 at 9pm* on VH1 and VH1 Soul.
After forming TLC with Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozonda "Chilli"
Thomas, the trio was signed to LaFace Records. In 1992, TLC released their
debut album titled Oooooh ... On the TLC Tip which went on to sell 4
million copies and went platinum in the U.S. Under the guidance of
Arista/Laface record moguls Kenneth 'Babyface' Edmonds and LA Reid, the
girls released albums CrazySexyCool (1994) and Fanmail (1999) which was
named by 'Left Eye' as a tribute to TLC's faithful and supportive
followers. TLC remains the top- selling female R & B group of all time.
Along with success though, there was also controversy. During her time
in Honduras, Lisa reflected on her triumphs and mistakes with an eye
towards the spiritual transformation she so desperately sought. In the
film, Lisa opens up about numerous personal matters. She discusses her
internal unhappiness, her problems with alcohol and the comfort she found
in rehab. For the first time ever, she speaks publicly about her tumultuous
relationship with NFL star Andre Rison that led her to set fire to their
Atlanta home in December 1994.
Whether it was practicing yoga, astrology or numerology, hiking in the
jungle or swimming through the waterfalls, each day in Honduras was spent
with the intent of making personal changes and focusing on self. Soon after
they arrived, Lisa exposed her friends to the teachings of Dr. Sebi, a
natural healer who introduced her to Honduras 5 years earlier. The group
began to cleanse their bodies both physically and mentally as they followed
his regimen of drinking herbs and adhering to a vegetarian diet.
Throughout the course of filming, Lisa witnessed daily improvements,
yet struggled to understand what was still lurking inside her. As the last
days approached, an unsuspecting emotion of fear and restlessness set in.
Lisa revealed that she was having premonitions and that she believed a
spirit was chasing her. Her premonitions ultimately held true when while
returning from the village in which they had been staying, Lisa lost
control of the car she was driving and did not survive the crash. She was
the only fatality out of seven passengers in the car and almost all of her
final moments were caught on tape. Through the footage she left behind, the
public is able to experience and relive the true essence and spirit that
was Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and the film project Lisa started, but never got
to finish, is now complete. Despite her untimely death her legacy continues
to live on and is celebrated by her family and friends as well as her fans,
proving that these are by far not the last days of Left Eye.
