You have to know that the way a user keeps up his computer has a lot to do with how it loads and at what speed. I've had so many people tell me their computer is slow, and when I go to check it out they have like 10+ programs in their taskbar with even more running in the background.

A lot of the programs you install are loaded once the computer is booted up, they run and load in the background and usually sit in your taskbar (you can see them with a single ctrl/alt/del). This uses up a lot of your computers memory. At most I have AIM and a couple of system files loaded when I boot. There is no point in having them run at all times just to slow down my computer. I'd rather take 5 seconds and load em up when I need them.

A simple way to speed up your computer:

Go to Start > Run.. type in msconfig, and go to "Start Up". Eveything with a check-mark is going to load onto your computer before you can access it. If you have burning programs, music programs, etc. you don't need them open 24/7, just put a shortcut somewhere and load it when you need it. Uncheck any programs that your computer does not require to load windows. I often find that spyware programs will be listed here as these culprits want their programs to load everytime your system does.

Now go to Start > Control Panel. Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall any software that you don't need or havent used in a while. You can always get them back later.

You can get an idea of how many programs are running by pressing Control-Alt-Delete once and looking over the processes.

Bottom line, if you have a decent speed processor with enough memory, and your computer is running slow, then your resources are being hogged. Spyware is a main factor. Just because you don't see popups or your bowser hassn't been taken over, does not mean you are free from infection. You have to get to the root of the problem.

is it at all possible to have the spy ware on my computer to some how call a foriegn country? Because when I checked my phone bill it was 50 bucks more then it should of been. I checked it and the shit said that I called Great Britan. I called the number and it was some Sprint number or some shit. I asked my roomates and they never called. Could be some porn number that my roommates called. Cause I never called the number. Anyways has anyone heard if dialers can call out to other numbers?

Very possible BasiCC. If you are on Dial-up it wouldnt be that uncommon. But if you are on a broadband connection, then I dont really know how it would dial out, unless you are using a program to call people on broadband.

If you did EVERYTHING I told you to do in that thread called "SPYWARE"....remember that? You should not have any problems. That's on the real.
Did you get the firewall I recommended? Outpost firewall will stop that dialer from getting out....if you can't remove it....this is a simple fix. Here it is again. It's really easy to use. DOWNLOAD THE FREE VERSION...NOT PRO!
http://www.agnitum.com/download/
after you install it......it will begin to work automatically.....AFTER YOU RESTART YOUR PC!
After your pc starts....log on to the internet as you usually do! when you attempt to log on ....you will see a pop up dialog box warning you something IS TRYING TO GET OUT TO THE INTERNET. You want to allow everything that has to do with your internet connection OUT. For example. InternetExplorer.exe whoever your internet service provider is ......you want to allow all that shit out ....or else you WON'T BE ABLE TO ACCESS THE INTERNET AT ALL. When that first dialog box pops up and it says .....for example....."internetexplorer.exe is requesting an outgoing connection to 123.456.789 you want to set a permanent rule for this....just click the button that says "always trust this application. then click ok....more than likely another box will pop up telling something else is trying to get out.....for example......"12345.DLR or 12345.exe is requesting an outgoing connection to 123.456.789" you want to click the button that says "ALWAYS BLOCK THIS APPLICATION"....REPEAT ALL THESE STEPS .....ANYTHING REQUESTING AN INCOMING CONNECTION SHOULD BE "ALWAYS BLOCKED" not "BLOCKED ONCE"....because it will ask you the same question everytime you log on to the net......this really is an easy thing to do.

I already got the firewall. The dialer, dialing to Great Britian happend to me two weeks ago, I just got the bill in the mail yesterday. I just wasn't sure if that was the dialer or my roommate calling porn. I didn't want to pay 50 bucks for something that I didn't do. Damn though now I have to cough up 50 bucks. Weak sauce.

And for the LOVE OF GOD can someone find me a working serial to Spyware-Killa v9.0? I just spent hours like a dumbass and came up with shit.

******** XP USERS ********

If you are ever infected with a virus or any type of spyware: Go to Start, then Run, type in restore, and then run rstrui.exe.

I stumbled across this tool when something vicious hit my computer and ruined Internet Explorer. I went to delete a couple of things and lost my internet connection as well. What this does is allow you to restore your computer to the settings of any previous date. I just went in, picked the day before (when my computer was uninffected) and it completely restored it to those exact settings. Not only that but it didn't erase any of my documents I created during that day.

I've only tried it once and it worked to perfection.

This feature is likely on newer versions of windows but I don't remember ever seeing it on Windows 98.

Has this ever failed for anyone?
me...my system restore doesn't work

Ok, I’ve been having an on going problem with a computer that I never use (roommates) but unfortunately it has all of my mp3’s (thousands of them) along with some other valuable information.

It has W2K and I suspect it has been massively attacked by viruses and possibly the hard drive is fucked.

So, the problem is that when I log on as Admin (or any other account for that matter) everything will appear fine for a moment or two, but eventually it will freeze and I have to restart. Now, it freezes even if I open up a simple document or want to browse ‘My Computer.’ Sometimes it won’t freeze long enough that I can run different applications to search and destroy for files.

I’ve used Spysweeper, Search & Destroy and a couple others and I have been successful in removing unwanted files. However, the problem still remains. I suspect the hard drive is fucked.

I was thinking I can possibly upgrade the OS to XP without loosing my files, but I have not tried this yet in fear I might loose everything, and plus I dont know if it will do any good.

All I care about are the mp3's. I can give a shit about the computer; in fact, I would love to throw the piece of shit off my balcony.

Advice, diagnosis, comments?
