Convicted serial killer Dayton Leroy Rogers sentenced to death in Oregon for fourth time despite moratorium - CBS News

Dayton Leroy Rogers, convicted of killing six women and dumping their bodies in the forest east of Molalla, sits in court during a hearing, Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015, in Portland, Ore.

One of Oregon's most prolific serial killers has been sentenced to death, for the fourth time.

Jurors made the decision Monday in the case of Dayton Leroy Rogers, who killed eight women in the 1980s.

Rogers had previously been sentenced to death three times for his crimes, and each time the penalty was overturned on legal grounds. The new sentence comes despite a moratorium on executions in Oregon, which has not executed anyone since 1997.

Rogers apologized in court Friday. He told jurors the word "sorry" was inadequate, but that he was sorry for taking "eight precious lives."

Defense attorney Richard Wolf has said Rogers would waive his right to an appeal if he got a sentence of life without the possibility of parole.
