Derek Fisher of New York Knicks, Matt Barnes of Memphis Grizzlies scuffle at party

New York Knicks coach Derek Fisher and Memphis Grizzlies forward Matt Barnes were involved in a physical altercation Saturday night in Los Angeles during a party at the home of Barnes' ex-wife, sources confirmed to ESPN.com on Wednesday.

When Barnes arrived at the home, he got physical with Fisher, sources said. But Fisher did not show any outward physical injuries when he returned to practice on Tuesday. Fisher told Knicks officials he had enjoyed spending time with his children over the weekend, sources said.

Barnes and Fisher played together with the Los Angeles Lakers from 2010 to 2012 and were said by one former teammate to be "very close" at the time.

Barnes had been in Santa Barbara, where the Grizzlies are holding training camp, and Fisher had flown to California after practice on Saturday to visit his children.

The Knicks had Sunday off; Fisher missed the practice on Monday because of travel problems, the team said.

The Knicks, Grizzlies and the NBA became aware of the incident and were gathering information, sources told ESPN.com. A league spokesman said it was premature to comment.

Fisher said before Wednesday night's preseason game in New York against Brazil's Paschoalotto Bauru that he was focused on the game. He declined to offer specifics on the incident.

The New York Post, which earlier reported the altercation, reported that Fisher and Barnes' ex-wife, Gloria Govan, a star on the show "Basketball Wives LA," are in a relationship. Fisher filed for divorce from his wife, Candace, in March.

Fisher was asked about his mindset given the report about his altercation with Barnes and his reaction to it.

"Personal and private matters are personal and private. We're obviously public figures, but we're at work," he said. "So I won't be commenting on anything that's happened personally or privately for me.
Derek Fisher said he addressed the issue with the Knicks about two hours before Wednesday night's preseason game against Brazil's Paschoalotto Bauru. Richard Rowe/Getty Images

"So my state of mind is that we have a game tonight and nothing that I've experienced has anything to do with how we perform tonight. I'm completely focused and committed to the team, not distracted in any way. And that's about it as far as my state of mind."

Fisher said he addressed the issue with the team about two hours before tipoff.

"I wanted to make sure that before they were asked about it at least that they heard from me directly about my state of mind and how present I am," Fisher said. "I've been through a lot in life and experienced a lot of things. And sometimes we go through things in life that we can or cannot control. I'm here, I'm focused. It's not something that's going to take me away from who we are and what we're trying to do. And I assured them of that. The only way to do that is to go out and do your job, and that's what we're going to do tonight."

Fisher said he wasn't concerned about the issue becoming a distraction for the Knicks.

"No, I individually can't control, I guess, how other people or players handle distraction," he said. "I think that's an individual process for each guy. Like I said to them, you try your best. I tried as a player for a long time to -- you try your best to mitigate any distraction.

"But some things you can't control. And I was very honest with them as far as that goes."

Fisher also didn't seem concerned that the incident could undermine his authority with the players.

"I get the question. I don't really, I guess, want to get into why I missed practice," Fisher said. "I guess I'll cover that at some point. I think you guys know my choice six or seven months ago in terms of my family and where my kids live. So as far as that goes, the guys are the ones that ultimately know who I am and what I'm about. They see me every day. Players are smart. They feel things very acutely. So if guys feel like I'm not here or not focused, they'll find that out. At this point [it's not an issue]."

Fisher, who is in his second season as Knicks coach, didn't rule out the possibility of legal ramifications in relation to the incident.

"I guess we'll see," he said.

Matt Barnes Fought Derek Fisher For Sleeping With His Wife Gloria Govan

Matt Barnes Fought Derek Fisher For Sleeping With His Wife Gloria Govan

by HHE Editors · October 7, 2015

Matth Barnes Derek Fisher Gloria GovanMatt Barnes and his reality TV star wife Gloria Govan are on the outs.

That’s why the Memphis Grizzlies forward was going around boldly claiming he had knowledge of Rihanna.

But Barnes still doesn’t want Govan out there playing the field. Especially when the field is his ex-teammate and current New York Knicks coach Derek Fisher.

Fisher, who’s separated from his wife, hosted a party Saturday with Govan at the LA home she used to share with Barnes.

According to the New York Post, when Barnes caught wind of this he jumped in his car and drove 95 miles with the intention of “beating the shit” out of Fisher.

Witnesses at the house party confirm Barnes did attack Fisher. However, they say the injuries to the 41-year old were minor, and Fisher decided not to press charges.

A source told the Post the fight was why Fisher missed the Knicks practice on Monday.

Lol, Knicks.

Update: Fisher may still take legal action

Minnesota Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders dies of cancer at age 60

Flip Saunders, who tallied more than 1,000 victories over a 35-year coaching career that included successful stops with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons, died Sunday of cancer at age 60.

He also coached the Washington Wizards during a career that spanned 17 seasons as an NBA head coach and a 654-592 record.

Saunders announced in August that he was being treated for Hodgkin lymphoma. Doctors considered it "very treatable and curable," and Saunders at the time said he planned to remain the Timberwolves' head coach and president of basketball operations. However, he was hospitalized following a setback in September, and it was announced Friday that Saunders would miss the entire 2015-16 season.

Saunders first became an NBA coach in 1996 with the Timberwolves and eventually led the team to eight straight playoff appearances. A standout offensive coach, Saunders specialized in coaching point guards. But perhaps the player he had the greatest impact on was a big man, a wiry kid who came straight from high school in 1995 named Kevin Garnett. Under Saunders' tutelage, Garnett developed into one of the best players in the NBA and eventually an MVP.

Forever in my heart....

Posted by Kevin Garnett on Sunday, October 25, 2015

After being fired by Minnesota in 2005, Saunders was hired by the Pistons the next season and took Detroit to the conference finals for all three seasons he was on the sideline.

Saunders, after a three-year stint with the Wizards, returned to the Wolves in 2013 as team president and part-owner. In 2014 he took over again as coach. He was in the process of a major rebuilding effort following the trade of Kevin Love that included the acquisition of rookie of the year Andrew Wiggins, the engineering of Garnett's return to mentor young players, the construction of a new downtown practice facility and a renovation of the Target Center.

We are extremely saddened to learn today Phil "Flip" Saunders has passed away at age 60.

— Kevin Love (@kevinlove) October 25, 2015

My condolences to the Saunders and Tim @Tim berwolves family! Lost a great person in our fraternity way to early. So sad #RIPFlip

— LeBron James (@KingJames) October 25, 2015

Chicago Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg, who played for Saunders with the Timberwolves from 2003-05, said he was in "a little bit of shock" after learning of his death.

"Flip played a huge part in my life. Everything from bringing me in and giving me a chance to taking a lot of the philosophy that he had," Hoiberg said Sunday. "He was a great mentor, a great leader ... a special, special person.

"And that's the thing, you're riding home on a plane win or lose -- Flip was always upbeat. [He'd] talk to you, come back and see how you're feeling, especially during struggles. He was a fatherly figure, such a caring individual. It's just awful how this whole thing went down with the complications from his cancer. It's just a sad, sad day. He'll be greatly missed."

His NBA teams won 50 or more games on seven occasions, including a Pistons franchise-record 64 victories in 2005-06. Twice he coached in the All-Star Game, and he led Team USA to the gold medal in the Goodwill Games in 2001. He also spent time as an analyst at ESPN.

John Wall, who played for Saunders with the Wizards, also issued his condolences on Instagram: "The sting of losing another loved one to cancer doesn't get any easier. My thoughts & prayers are with the Saunders &Twolves family."

Philip Daniel Saunders was born on Feb. 23, 1955, in Cleveland and was a prep basketball star at Cuyahoga Heights High School, where he was named the state's player of the year after averaging 32 points a game during his senior season.

His mother Kay nicknamed him Flip after hearing the name at a beauty salon.

In college he played on juggernaut teams at the University of Minnesota, where he played alongside future NBA players Mychal Thompson, Ray Williams and Kevin McHale.

He began his coaching career at Golden Valley Lutheran College in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1977 and eventually rose up the ranks during seven seasons in the Continental Basketball Association, leading the La Crosse Catbirds to two league championships.

He landed in the NBA in 1995, when he wrote a letter to new owner Glen Taylor asking for a job. His college buddy, McHale, took over the basketball operations with the Timberwolves and Saunders became the team's general manager. When Bill Blair was fired 20 games into the season, Saunders was suddenly the head coach of a struggling franchise that had never made the playoffs.

Upon his return in 2013, Saunders grabbed a level of influence within the Wolves that was unmatched in the NBA. His fingerprints were on everything, from personnel decisions to in-game strategies, even down to the pregame entertainment.

He liked to sneak up behind unsuspecting visitors to Target Center, clamp his hand down on a shoulder and squeeze with a vise-like grip that came from hours of massaging his polio-stricken mother in his youth.

He would carry around autographed cards of himself to hand out to fans, and playfully give them to media members as well with a mischievous grin on his face.

Gregarious and outgoing, he endeared himself to a Twin Cities community that viewed him as a hometown boy done good, with his Gophers roots overshadowing his Cleveland upbringing. And Flip loved Minnesota right back. When he returned to the organization after 10 years away, he recounted a story about working for ESPN and being asked why he still lived in Minnesota so long after he was fired.

"And I'd say 'Well, you don't really understand unless you're from Minnesota. You really don't get it. Even when it snows on May 3rd you really don't get it,'" Saunders said. "And the loyalty and the passion that the people have here is what always drives me back."

Saunders is survived by his wife and four children, including son Ryan, who is a Wolves assistant coach.

"He's a great basketball man," Hoiberg said. "... He'll be missed. There's not one person I think that you could talk to to say one bad thing about Flip Saunders."

The Timberwolves open the season Wednesday. Sam Mitchell has been named interim head coach of the Timberwolves, and GM Milt Newton is heading the team's personnel department.

Houston Rockets fire coach Kevin McHale

The Houston Rockets have fired Kevin McHale, the coach told ESPN's Chris Broussard on Wednesday.

The news was earlier reported by Yahoo! Sports. Assistant J.B. Bickerstaff will serve as interim coach.

The Rockets are 4-7 this season, including a current four-game losing streak that prompted a players-only meeting at the Toyota Center on Tuesday morning. The Rockets have failed to reach 100 points during their losing streak, and are averaging 20 fewer points in their losses overall this season.

McHale, in his fifth season with the team, was in the first year of a three-year extension worth more than $12 million that he signed last December.

"We're hanging our head," McHale said after the Rockets lost to the Boston Celtics on Monday. "Things aren't going our way and we hang our head. Bottom line, we haven't put together really good basketball, all year."

McHale was hired before the 2011-12 season by the team. He was 193-130 overall with the Rockets, including three straight trips to the playoffs and a loss in last season's Western Conference finals.

Houston hosts the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night.
