Today, we wanna talk to you a little bit about Sopa(the Stop Online Piracy Act) which is currently being debated down in the United states.
Many ppl who reside outside of US are not aware of this bill or dont think that it will necessarily affect them, but it certainly will.. It is the world wide web, afterall!!
We are being led to believe, that this bill was initiated by the Music industry and major film industries in hollywood, to protect copyrighted material.
However, when you actually read the bill, you'll quickly see that it has nothing to do with copyrighted material and everything to do with Internet censorship and blocking the free flow of information.
The way that they have this set up, is that you are considered guilty first, then you hav to prove your innocence!
If somebody wants to shut down your website for instance, all they would have to do under this bill is to suggest that you are infringing on their copyright. Your website will be taken down, at which point you'd have to go to court to prove your innocence.
You can be in violation, not only for posting coprighted material but also for simply linking to websites that do!
Anyone who is found guilty under this new bill, could face upwards of 5 years in prison
