ROCKFORD – Police on Monday identified the victim of an early Sunday morning homicide as Anthony Smiley, 24, of Poplar Grove. Smiley was one of two people shot Sunday when a verbal altercation at a gathering escalated into bloodshed, Rockford Police Department Assistant Deputy Chief Doug Pann said. Witnesses told police who responded to reports of shots fired at 2:50 a.m. Sunday that there was an “impromptu” party in a parking lot in the 1000 block of 9th Street.
Smiley was shot and killed. Anthony A. Riggs, 25, was shot and remains in critical condition at an area hospital. Riggs gave police a Rockford address, but was initially described as a Belvidere man by police and is listed with a Belvidere address in court records. Pann said investigators are following several leads in the case. Pilot Police District detectives are working with Gang Unit investigators to develop and locate suspects.
