The Strange Music label (Tech N9ne) is gearing up to release some major solo projects from a bunch of the labels top hit makers. The most anticipated of these albums is Tech's label mate and long time touring partner Kutt Calhoun. Kutt has been on tour with Tech for years now and has a swagger and a style that attracts people to him and his music.
Feature Presentation, his sophomore album will drop this fall on Sept 16th and will feature new cover art than the artwork currently out there. I had a chance to chop it up with my guy Kutt for a minute and find out what's good with this new project and pick his brain for as much info as I could without giving away any secret info. Heres how it went down!
Siccness: Kutt Calhoun...what's good pimpin'?
Kutt: What's good man? I'm just out here on this Fire and Ice tour man. We just got to L.A. a couple of hours ago, got this show out here so we plan on bringin' down the house tonight.
Siccness: So..you got a new project coming out...Feature Presentation.
Kutt: Ah man...Feature Presentation man, long awaited man. It's gonna be a four year hiatus man when August hits man. My first album dropped in August of 04 so it's gonna be my sophomore release but I'm gonna treat it like it's still my first release man cause it's been so long. The music, the style, and the content is so much better man. It's finna shock a lot of people man. I feel like it's gonna be one of them albums man to get me over that hump that I need to be over to be on the grind and sell all across the U.S know what I mean?
Siccness: So do you have a solid release date for this yet?
KUTT: Yeah...we defiantly got a solid release date man. The release date is set for Sept. the 16th and I don't see that changing. We got other releases on the label, Kalico on May 6th, that's set in stone. Tech's is July first, that's set in stone. Scatterman and Snug Brim is Aug. 5th, that's set in stone. I don't see it changing.
Siccness: I heard talk of a video shoot for this album. What's the single and when can we look for that?
KUTT: Right now that Party Rock is f**kin' the shows up. Everybody is feelin' it man, every time I do that song so...Party Rock is a definite single man. In the clubs and on the radio...either way you want to go. That's video and all the above man.
Siccness: So how do you juggle making the album and being on tour because I know you guy's are on tour like beasts. I heard that you walk in the studio and just drop it...no playin' around.
KUTT: Man it's all work and no play when it come to that man but uh...we been doin' it for so long it's like...we tour extensively so whenever we get off time or whenever we get home for that little month, aside from having to take care of your bills, and take care of your loved ones, your family, whatever type of needs you need to take care of when you get home...we in the studio. It's like we been doing it for so many years man so It's like it's nothin'. It's like this is our job and part of a job is sacrificing man so if we only get like 2 weeks off when we get off of tour, aside from whatever you need to do...you got to squeeze that in but you also got to take care of work and work comes first man. This work is our bread and butter so any little chance we get man we right back in the studio so...is it hard to juggle... it used to be in the beginning man but you get adapted to it. This is how you gonna feed your kids and your family you know, and take care of yourself so it comes first man. It aint even no juggling involved, it's first priority.
Siccness: Now that your getting some shine on your own, how you been feeling lately now that theres a shine on you as your own artist?
KUTT: I'm feeling real good about it man. I been feeling good for the last couple of years man and I'm gonna put it like this man...of coarse a lot of people were iggnorant to who I was myself you know what I'm sayin'...Kutt Calhoun. A lot of people know me from being on stage with Tech. But at the same time, you know, we did that hostile takeover tour and I did have my own set along with Scatter and Snug. It's like..I don't think that anybody ever thought from the beginning that I'm just some hype man cause I always had either one or two songs that I did solo or maybe those two songs and a song I did with Tech so I never was just a hype man and I don't think people thought that I just was a hype man. Now for people who probly didn't know who Tech N9ne was, people might have thought ok, that guy is up there so he's Tech's hype man probly. But then they see me get down and it's gonna change they minds. I got an album for sale over at the mech so you gonna see me up there on that stage but then you gonna go to the merch to buy a Tech N9ne album and you gone look down and you gone see Kutt Calhoun right next to it and be like let's check this ni**a out...I done seen this ni**a do his thing up there. So I don't think I was in the shadow, but you know what, it defiantly feels better man to have this second release coming out after so long man cause you know of coarse we use Tech as a stepping stone. He's a stepping stone. He's a motivator and an innovator for all of us so of coarse we use his name to boost our self up as well as get his name out there for our self man. So yeah .. it's feelin' real good that I'm comin' out with my sophmore release man. Extensive touring man and sh*t's getting better, we bout to do videos man. I'm getting more of a solo focus from everybody so that defiantly feels a lot better man.

Siccness: So for the people who don't know. How can we set your music aside from what we heard on the last album and what we heard on tour with Tech. How would you set this record aside and explain the sound and the concept behind this record? Cause I hear theres a concept behind it.
KUTT: Right...the concept behind this whole album here, Feature Presentation man, I'm thinkin' it's gonna be something like you aint never seen man. I'm into the storytelling' rappin'. Like making a point out of a lot of content and having something to actually talk about. Like I want you to be able to close your eyes and just listen to my words man. You can picture everything I'm sayin'. I'm a storyteller rapper like the Tupac's and the Scarfaces and the Ice Cubes of the game man you know what I'm sayin'? The Big L's and the Eminem's. I like to tell stories man and Feature Presentation...what it is...the whole theme of Feature Presentation man is like we go to the movies and the Feature Presentation is the main thins you see, well, this album Feature Presentation, I want everybody to know, this is the focal point. This is the main thing that your about to hear and the theme of my album is...since it's Feature Presentation...like .98.9 of my album titles is gonna be movie titles man. Good classic movies that everybody would be able to look back on and remember those movies. I'm not actually going to be talking about the same things that was going on with the movie I'm just using that movie title on my album.
Siccness: Now let's touch on The Bay. I know you guys got a lot of fans out here and ties out here.
KUTT: Ah man it'a all love to the bay man. We got connections with the bay of coarse through Tech N9ne with the Regime, we cool with 40, that's our dude, and everybody with his camp, RJ, we cool with Yuk, T-nutty want to get me on a project with them called "Second and third letter" with Messy Marv, and T-Nutty...they want me on there! Then uh, "Juiced" they want me on Bully's wit Fully's 2. I made some connections with them n*ggas man and they some solid n*ggas man. Much love to them. They got love from this midwest dude from Kansas city who got love from Mac Dre and everybody in the bay you feel me? Much love from KC to the Bay...that's gonna be an album one day. KC to the Bay. We'll all hook up together and blow some sh*t out the water mayne. NLR: That's love homie! Much appreciated Kutt and that's a wrap!
